Prime Versatility
Fast and compact, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 mixes a versatile wide-angle focal length with a bright design and a sleek form factor. As a wide-angle, this lens excels in a variety of situations, from street shooting to landscapes to travel, and the f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in available lighting and benefits controlling depth of field.
Optical Design
  • One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations, enabling greater sharpness and even resolution from corner to corner.
  • Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture provides the ability to create images with a shallow depth of field as well as work in low-light conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Handling
  • Autofocus system uses a linear motor and internal focus design to provide quick and precise focusing performance along with silent focusing while recording videos.
  • Customizable focus hold button for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

The Sony A7 IV gimbal master.

If you use a gimbal and need deadly accurate autofocus from a lens look no further. Typically I would use a 50mm on a gimbal to get dreaming wedding shots but as the sony IV shoots 60 fps in crop mode (35mm closer to 50mm 2.0 with apsc crop mode) this works perfectly. It is lightweight and incredibly small, and the focus is fast and dependable. So the sony a7 iv has a feature where you can tap the screen to put the focus in track mode. This feature is amazing when you have multiple subjects in the frame, and eye focus is having issues. Also, as a note of reference, I shoot Pany S1's with 35 1.4 and 85. 1.4 and just switched from a pany s5 and pany 35mm to the sony as a fly cam. The autofocus was not terrible on the s5, and for portrait sessions, it was fine as I do multiple takes, but when the bride walking down the isle, I was tired fo the pany hunting or focusing on some random person on the side...THIS LENSE JUST WORKS AND WORKS WELL... No need to pay for the 35 1.4 which is a lot heavier and tougher to balance and fly all day!

I think that for the price, this is an exceptional value. It is much less expensive, lighter and smaller than the 1.4 and 1.2 35s out there, and 90+% of their image quality. I shoot this on a Sony A7C, which I picked also for light weight and small size. A superb combination for general shooting, especially street photography. (hint: put your A7C into silent mode).

This lens is small and sharp! It is great for almost everything at 35mm. It does struggle with some abbreviations, but so have seen worse.

How can I easily and fast, change the aperture settings on a SONY fx6, using this lense?
Asked by: Per
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens would require you to adjust the lens' aperture using the controls built onto the Sony FX3 Full-Frame Cinema Camera. The Online Instruction Manual on Sony's website for the Sony FX3 Full-Frame Cinema Camera States "1: MODE (Mode) button → use the control wheel to select [Aperture Priority] → press the center of the control wheel. 2: Select the desired value by turning the front/rear dial." It also states "1: MODE (Mode) button → [Manual Exposure] → press the center of the control wheel. 2: Select the desired aperture value by turning the front dial. Select the desired shutter speed by turning the rear dial. You can change the setting of the front/rear dial using MENU → (Setup) → [Dial Customize] → [Dial Setup]."

If using this lens with the A7RIII or greater to shoot 4k will this be effectively a 53mm lens?

This lens would maintain its given focal length on an A7R III or greater since it is for the full frame format.

Would you recommend this for copywork of paintings? I'm getting a Sony a7RII and am not sure which macro lens to get. I'm coming from a 60mm Nikon that works well for my space.
Asked by: Thomas
I would not recommend this lens at all. It has terrible chromatic aberration and it is definitely it suited to macro work. Check out the reviews and you'll see. I returned mine after 1 day of use. Sony has several other 35mm options that are great. They are all a little pricey but you might also look at Sigma art series or Tamaron. If you need Macro go with the 90mm which is fantastic.
