Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Overview

By B&H Photo's

Created for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens provides a versatile range of wide-angle focal lengths with excellent image quality while optimizing size and weight.

An Art-series zoom, this lens is also distinguished by its fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture to suit working in available lighting conditions. Featuring a sophisticated optical design, a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements is used to minimize both chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating combined with a Nano Porous Coating also helps to suppress lens flare and ghosting to a greater degree than conventional anti-reflective coatings. This helps to more effectively produce color-accuracy and contrast-rich imagery in a variety of lighting conditions.

Though full-time manual focus is available, this lens is equipped with a stepping motor that enables smooth, high-speed autofocusing that is notably quiet whether utilizing features such as Face/Eye Detection AF or during video shooting. A built-in Autofocus-Lock (AFL) button can be assigned additional functions to widen the range of operations available on the lens, while inside, a rounded 11-blade diaphragm improves image quality by helping to create smooth bokeh. Additionally, a built-in lens hood serves to protect the front element as well as prevent stray light from causing flare.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Created for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, this wide-angle zoom is designed to deliver excellent image quality while optimizing size and weight. It is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 21-36mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and provides greater control over depth of field.
Five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and one F Low Dispersion (FLD) element markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements, including a large-diameter aspherical lens, control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating combined with a Nano Porous Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting to a greater degree than conventional anti-reflective coatings. The combination of these coatings produces contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, and help to make the lens even more effective in backlit conditions.
A stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance. Full-time manual focus control can also be selected.
Built-in Autofocus-Lock (AFL) button can be assigned additional functions widens the range of operations available on the lens.
Rounded eleven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Included rear filter holder is equipped with a fall-prevention lock for attaching and securing gel filters along the lens mount.
Weather-resistant construction with a brass bayonet that affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.

Perfect for real estate shooters

GREAT ZOOM!

I've only used the best of the glass (i.e., on an APS-C sensor). Focus/sharpness at infinity at 14mm (21mm equiv.) exceeds that of Samyang's 14mm prime. Sharpness remains excellent at least up to 21mm and is still very good above 21mm. AF on a Sony e-mount is silent and quick. I find the lens comparatively impressive.

Top class build quality, outstanding performance, super sharp! Love the versatility! By far my favorite lens!!!! Highly recommend it! Great value for the money. I personally find it way better in any way compared to the Sony 16-35 2.8GM

My go-to for wide angle work

I use this primarily for real estate work on my gimbal. The best feature is its internal zoom mechanic. Changing focal length will not create the need to re-balance your gimbal, which is huge when you're shooting on site with limited time. The image quality is sharp and found many helpful comparisons online. Because the lens is so bulbous, they implemented a unique filter system for filters. I have not used it but I will likely go with an external filter holder system instead. Not a big deal for real estate shoots but definitely an added expense down the line.

Great lens, good alternative to the Leica 16-35 L-mount VE

Honestly, while the Leica 16-35 L mount VE is a great lens, the Sigma 12-24 is better for me because I don't take many pictures in this range. The Leica lens I use the most is the 24-90 VE followed by the 90-280. With this Sigma lens the focus is crisp, images are sharp, and the lens is portable. I also found this lens really useful as a companion to the Leica L-mount 35mm F2. While the image quality of the Leica 35 is stunning, it is not orders of magnitude better than the Sigma 12-24. I found that these two lenses were a good combo for shooting architecture and street scenes with most of the shots taken with the 35mm lens.

What is the size of the rear filter? Would a 29x29mm and 0.1mm thick filter fit?
Asked by: Nick
Although Sigma does not specify the filter size you can use, they do include a filter guide which will allow you to cut the filter to size so it can fit into the back of the lens. A example of a filter that can be used would be a Kodak 3 x 3" Neutral Density (ND) #96 0.90 Optical Gelatin Wratten Filter, B&H # #KOND.99633O. https://bhpho.to/2MpcdML
