Peak Design Aluminum Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Aluminum Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 3.4 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from aluminum. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

  • Holds DSRL/mirrorless cameras weighing up to 20 lb

Peak Design Aluminum Travel Tripod Reviews

    Exceptional functionality and design

I have been looking for a compact, light travel tripod that can fit in my carry on. I've purchased a number over the years but either they were poorly built or had to be disassembled to pack. When I saw the brilliant design and feature rich Peak Design travel tripod I had to see it in person. Going to the San Francisco store, setting it up and seeing all the features it offered, I was sold! Since getting it I've taken it on a couple of trips that have proven it's ability to travel with ease and versatility in the field. I am thrilled to have it with me and it's ease of use has made me use it more readily than any other travel tripod! It's also the envy of my fellow photographic travelers! Can't recommend it more highly than to say thank you Peak Design for creating a dream come true travel tripod!

Great except one leg is already loose

Right out of the box you can tell this is a solid tripod. The materials are great and it's very easy to stick into my bag. But I do have two issues: 1) The top head, above the slider adjustment, has protruding grooves making it difficult to get the camera into a completely 90 degree, vertical orientation. I've had to loosen the plate on my camera, turn that, then tighten to get the camera to face straight out in vertical orientation. This is very annoying. 2) The very bottom section of one leg is already loose after one use. When tightened with the lever, as soon as I stand the tripod on the ground it starts sagging in one direction because that leg is sliding down, even though it's tightened. This happened literally 20 seconds after putting framing a shot for the first time. For a $400 tripod, this is unacceptable.

##PD Travel Tripod Aluminum The aluminum feels really dense and heavy when its condensed but trust that it does get a lot lighter and its very easy to manage when its extended. The construction is top-notch-I dropped the tripod from chest height and it broke the floor! I thought the phone grip included was a nice touch but its kinda useless if you want to shoot vertically and it definitely cant be trusted to hold phones or cases that are slick.

I am extremely impressed with the design thinking on this product. They have compacted tons of features into the smallest amount of space. Hiding the clasps, tools, knobs and other functions but making them fully accessible was done brilliantly. My only small complaint is the bubble level on the top of the head is barely usable. Aside from that, great job!

I bought the Carbon tripod a year ago, and it has been a travel companion ever since. Great options, so well thought out. I also would note that their customer service is superb - I had a problem with the tripod and it was dealt with. Just great and thoroughly recommend them.

Just recieved my Travel Tripod and am blown away. I have an older Manfrotto 055XDB (with zero complaints) but it isn't a "travel/packable" tripod by any means. Peak Design's latest foray into the tripod battles is a lightweight but extremely sturdy warrior. After watching the user video and reading the enclosed directions, the tripod operates seamlessly. I t can hold my cameras at just about any angle and the mechanism to lock the ball swivel head is intuitive and easy to use. Many thumbs up for Peak Design!!!

This is now my goto tripod

My main tripod usage is for landscapes and I had a great carbon fibre tripod from another supplier which was good but heavier and was becoming a bit of an issue on longer hikes. I had some trips coming up and decided to invest in the PD carbon fibre Travel Tripod. Not one ounce of regret. It is light, it is small and easy to pack. I have had no issues with stability (Sony A7R4 with up to 600mm lenses). I do sometimes miss having a 3 axis pan head which my other one has eg panoramas, but I don't miss the weight. I also know I have the option to move my old head onto the PD legs if I wanted to. I know have this tripod attached to me backpack all the time. The decision is "Do I leave it behind" rather than "Do I have to take it" Great bit of kit.

Has anyone used this tripod and the adapter with a fluid head? If so, is the tripod stable enough to shoot action sports video?
    Asked by: Shawn
The tripod can hold plenty of weight on its on own, so you can use the Universal Head Adapter and a fluid head with a flat base on it. We recommend using a leveling base in addition to the fluid head of your choice to take into account any uneven surfaces. One such base is the Oben LH-2510 Leveling Base Head, BH # OBLH2510. https://bhpho.to/37yxTRx

Is there a tension adjustment for the ball head?
    Asked by: Helen
There is a ring below the mounting plate that you can use to adjust how tight or loose you want it to be, and you can squeeze it down pretty tight but I wouldn't recommend that. You should follow the manufacturer guidelines the max weight of the equipment it can hold.
