Peak Design Aluminum Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Aluminum Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 3.4 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from aluminum. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

  • Holds DSRL/mirrorless cameras weighing up to 20 lb

    Happy Traveler

In this photo Everyday 30L Backpack, Tech Pouch Not shown) and Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod all purchased for trip to Greece. Once I decided on Everyday Backpack for my business commuting the Travel Tripod and Tech Pouch were no brainers since they all integrate so well. Now I'm able to travel on business and bring my camera gear while being well protected in a professional looking bag. The Travel Tripod is light, compact, protected by its own case and easily slips into and secured in the side pocket of the backpack.

    Best tripod ever

So much smaller then anything else I’ve seen. It’s pricey but worth it for travelers. I wasn’t able to bring a tripod on trips before this one. They were to big. This one is perfect.

    Worth the cost, fabulous product

I've had cheaper tripods for ages but they generally don't get used much as they are just too fiddly. I was recommended (read 'nagged') by one of my friends to look at the Peak Design gear. I was a bit sceptical as it's a lot of cash but now it's arrived I have to say, it's fabulous. The video's on the site explaining how to use it were both entertaining and informative. I've watched films that I enjoyed less. The tripod is just so easy to set up and use that even I can do it. Changing from landscape to portrait mode takes seconds. The built in phone mount is useful although I haven't used it yet. All in all I am very pleased and it should last me a good few years.

    Aluminum tripod is incredible

I shoot short form documentaries - sometimes it feels impossible to lug a big tripod up a mountain or pack it for a flight. Because thud guy is tiny, and lightweight, I usually find myself throwing it in the water bottle pouch of my back pack For what I do, I couldn't be happier.

Finally -- The Tripod I've Been Looking For

I am a hobby photographer who has been looking to transition into doing serious creative work. I've been struggling with my larger, cheaper tripod for the past year. While it mostly got the job done, it was becoming far too unwieldy; as a result, I have been discouraged from taking it out with me on my photo jaunts. This tripod though? It's amazing how compact this thing is. It slides perfectly into my side pouch, and doesn't hamper my ability to go through MTA turnstiles or navigate crowded streets. It's also INCREDIBLY sturdy -- it genuinely takes some effort to open the legs, which I just love. It's loaded with clever features such as a phone mount that hides in the center column, and an emergency two-size hex wrench that fits snugly into a holster mounted on one of the legs. This thing rules. Best of all, it fits my needs exactly and will allow me to take my photography to the next level.

Small, stable, but is it durable?

First, the good: one cannot overstate the value of the unique design, with its ridiculously low volume and reasonable weight. I can throw my tripod in the water bottle pouch on the side of my backpack and go, without needing to carry an additional tripod strap or find some convoluted attachment method to secure a larger package to my (fairly small) backpack. The stability has also been impressive, even in mild wind with a substantial rig (~3 kg/~6 lb) attached. I'm looking forward to stress testing this setup in harsher conditions. Now, the bad: I'm concerned about durability. Shortly after first use, the rings used to tighten the ball head and mounting plate developed a great degree of play, wiggling around when loose. Peak Design replaced no problem, but I am concerned about this issue developing again. Another issue is with the (plastic) piece that surrounds the center column and attaches to the legs. One time, I lowered the center column without first loosening the ball head. The ball head was not quite aligned with the gaps intended for it to fit into, so the center column twisted so that the ball head could fit into those gaps. This plastic piece appears to have widened as a result of this twisting, as it now allows for the center column to rotate much more than it did before. It doesn't appear to affect the center column's stability while fully tightened, but I worry about the potential effects of another such incident. Bear in mind that these issues have arisen after less than a month of ownership! Finally, I would like to mention an aspect of design that makes a certain feature unusable in practice. As with most tripods, there is a hook that allows one to attach a camera bag or other weight to pull down on the center of the tripod and increase stability. On the PD Travel Tripod, this hook is attached to the center column itself, which means that any weight added to this hook reduces the amount of weight you can place on the ball head without the center column slipping. Since my camera bag is fairly heavy, I would need to bring some additional bag with a lesser amount of weight inside to hang from this hook, and even then I would need to be careful not to apply any downward pressure while adjusting the camera on the tripod, as I would be close to maxing out the weight on the center column even while locked. So, what's the end point here? Let not these concerns outweigh the unique benefits of this tripod. Just know its limits and maintain a well-founded hope in PD's support and warranty.

I have struggled with tripods. So hard to use, to set up, to adjust..............This tripod is the answer to all my prayers! And once I figured out the best way to easily change out to a gimble head for my occasional bird photography..................I was double SOLD. So glad I went with this one!

I bought this to carry with me when I hike and the amount of adjustability is awesome. I could place this practically anywhere with the amount of adjustability in the legs. It's super lightweight. I don't carry a lot of gear with me when I hike but if I did I probably would have spent the extra for the carbon fiber tripod but the aluminum is still insanely light.
