Peak Design Aluminum Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Aluminum Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 3.4 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from aluminum. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

Peak Design Aluminum Travel Tripod Reviews

Give The Design Team A Bonus

I am extremely impressed with the design thinking on this product. They have compacted tons of features into the smallest amount of space. Hiding the clasps, tools, knobs and other functions but making them fully accessible was done brilliantly. My only small complaint is the bubble level on the top of the head is barely usable. Aside from that, great job!

There is no such thing as a perfect tripod...

... or is there? After a good half decade bemoaning the lack of the perfect tripod I walked into my local camera store and found this beauty. It is everything I ever hoped for. Those who do substantial videography or use particularly large lenses may look further afield for a more traditional design but I've never had any issues with it for all my photography needs – including using a heavy EF 100-400 telephoto lens. It's incredibly compact, lightweight (carbon fiber or aluminum), and has a number of useful features. (I've gotten way more use out of the phone attachment that I expected for one).

    Best Tripod Ever!

I purchased this tripod because I needed something to meet the quick and easy needs but also the rugged and unpredictable nature of my job. Need something nice and sturdy? This is the tripod for you! Need something lightweight and nimble? This is the tripod for you! And the design of the head and plate makes it easy to detach, run and gun. Best money I've spent gear-wise. Carbon fiber is totally worth it by the way! It lives in the water bottle pouch on the side of my bag!

Name a better tripod... I'll wait...

The price was off-putting at first, I'll admit but after purchase, I can never imagine having less. It does everything you could want and more. It has features upon features and all in a svelte package and design. It is on the heavier side so you might consider the Carbon Fiber if you are able but beyond this, it is perfect.

It's great with room for improvements.

Got it at the Kickstarter. Have used it for years now. It's light. It's packable. It's a tripod! My pet peeve with it is, the cleaning of the joints once you have taken it out into the wild. Sand gets stuck so easily in between the joints of all the feet and they are never truly cleaned no matter how you try to clean them. The other improvement I would suggest is the ball head. Similar to the feet, it also picks up debris and can be an annoyance. The locking mechanism is great but clunky to use. There is now other creations out there which have improvements of lockable ball head designs.

High quality build & easy to use

I just love how much easier it is to do everything on this tripod. Opening it up, locking the camera in place, easy tilts, etc. It's a bit heavy so I can't easily bring it everywhere, but it definitely gets the job done at most shoots

    Fantastic!

I bought the Carbon tripod a year ago, and it has been a travel companion ever since. Great options, so well thought out. I also would note that their customer service is superb - I had a problem with the tripod and it was dealt with. Just great and thoroughly recommend them.

Has anyone used this tripod and the adapter with a fluid head? If so, is the tripod stable enough to shoot action sports video?
    Asked by: Shawn
The tripod can hold plenty of weight on its on own, so you can use the Universal Head Adapter and a fluid head with a flat base on it. We recommend using a leveling base in addition to the fluid head of your choice to take into account any uneven surfaces. One such base is the Oben LH-2510 Leveling Base Head, BH # OBLH2510. https://bhpho.to/37yxTRx

Is there a tension adjustment for the ball head?
    Asked by: Helen
There is a ring below the mounting plate that you can use to adjust how tight or loose you want it to be, and you can squeeze it down pretty tight but I wouldn't recommend that. You should follow the manufacturer guidelines the max weight of the equipment it can hold.
