Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 2.8 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from carbon fiber. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Reviews

Great for Travel, less so for everyday

This is a good device for traveling light. It does not work well for heavier, in studio, types of cameras with cages. The locking is not as strong as a traditional ball head.

A little short but worth every penny

I used this tripod in the streets of New York City and the snow of Yellowstone without any issues the last two months. Yes, I wish it was a little taller— I’m 5’10- but can easily work with it given my camera screens tilt up. The light weight, compactness and easy of a quick setup makes this a winner. In windy conditions one must hang a weight off the center post hook and even then, it’s not going to give the stability of larger RSS or Gitzo but for shorter exposures it works just fine. This is a keeper for anyone hiking or for someone where tripod weight is an issue. The design is very well thought out and it only takes a minute or two to understand how to use it. The other point I wish to mention is the setup and takedown times are very short.

Very good tripod except for clip

Very sturdy and easy to position & maneuver the head. However, in order to attach the clip to my camera I need to carry an allen wrench - poor design in my opinion. I shouldn’t need extra tools to use a tripod. Except for this problem it’s great.

Very compact and easy to use

I love this tripod, so happy I got it. I've had it for about 6 months now and its still great to use. Feels sturdy and robust. Travelling with it is far better than other tripods which I generally gave up on carrying.

Your carbon Fiber Tripod is awesome! It's so light. I have a stroke and my right hand is completely useless. Your tripod is so light that I could manage it without using the right hand.

Exactly as advertised. Easy to learn and easy

Great for no wind use and carry on bags

I purchased the carbon fiber tripod on the Kickstarter campaign and have used it for a couple of years. The size and weight are excellent for travel and long walks to the shooting locations. That said, I find it unreliable in windy situations, in situations such as Timelapse’s when you can’t stay with the tripod and with equipment that is heavier than 10 pounds. When you tilt the ballhead with a heavy lens the tripod does not seem stable and I wouldn’t walk away from it. The legs aren’t the strongest in windy situations, particularly if all 3 leg sections are engaged. I don’t like the bottom leg section, it is not the sturdiest. I would only recommend for lightweight use on optimal conditions.

It is feasible to use a 500mm lens on this, weight wise?
    Asked by: Susie
I don't know if I would put a prime 500mm lens on this tripod, maybe a zoom to 500mm but not a prime. I don't think it is robust enough for such a heavy and costly lens.

I’m sorry I don’t have the Peak Design Backpack you referenced. However, most of the pics I’ve seen show the tripod inside of it’s bag and sitting inside of the pouch on the outside of the backpack with a Peak Design Strap attaching it securely to the backpack.

    No panning?

    No panning?
    Asked by: Lyman
The Compact Ball Head on the Peak Design Travel Tripod does not have an independent panning function. For our first foray into ball heads, we prioritized space savings and a streamlined interface based around the most common workflows we saw in R&D and user research. Using the Peak Design ball head ring creates a unique and delightful workflow that is different than typical ball heads and we encourage you to give it a try without comparing features 1:1 with other heads. We are aware that the Compact Ball Head may not be ideal for the video-making community or folks who use panning in their photography. Because of this, we hope to have a pan/tilt video in our future product roadmap or an adapter that would work with this current ball head. Similarly, we are closely following feedback about panning functionality and it may similarly influence our development roadmap. For now, we have an add-on adapter that allows our tripod to be used with any 3rd party ball head using a traditional 3/8” screw. If you use panning frequently, this adaptor allows for the integration of that specific functionality. Additionally, we have seen some folks using panning adapters on top of our ball head.

The Peak Design CF travel tripod's ballhead supports portrait orientation. You may also keep the ballhead upright while shooting in the portrait orientation by using an L-bracket with your camera.
