Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 2.8 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from carbon fiber. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Reviews

    Fantastic with one flaw

I have been using the travel trip for a few months now and am happy with its function, lightness etc. It is less stable than my Gitzo so was problematic in high winds in Iceland for astro / aurora but that is unusual. The flaw is only that the Alan key "disappeared" from the tripod leg. Maybe when I was pulling it out of ts bag? I am not sure. I have bought another one but wish teh original had been more securely attached. Other than that I am very happy. Thanks.

Honestly, this tripod fills exactly the market it's going for: compact, lightweight. The fact that it's so streamlined in form is a great bonus to taking it around with me. To boot, it also uses quality materials and design, along with some thoughtful features. Highly recommend.

This tripod is great to keep in my camera backpack so I always have one with me. The phone mount is a great added bonus. I keep buying more stuff from this company because their products are so well thought out and solve all of the little problems that you just kind of live with with other products.

Owned for over 2 years, have travelled every where it even overseas Iceland, Greece etc. It is lightweight , durable well designed and super easy to set up and take down which Is the best part. I owned a manfrotto before and this is 10 times better.

    Best tripod ever!

I had many different tripods but none come even close to PD tripod. PD tripod is the BEST tripod available on the market, hands down. It’s small, portable but super sturdy and can easily handle my R6 with 100-500 lens on it! Every photographer should have one!

    LOVE IT

PD engineering is beyond compare. There are three stages of tripod buying. One, dang, I need a tripod. Buy cheap tripod. 2. Dang, this thing sux...ok get a better one. 3. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. the not so expensive but still not cheap isn't great. So you buy a gitzo and lug it around. 3a is all of the above apply to travel tripods. Pony up kids. The PD carbon fiber is worth it. It's like a water bottle in your side pocket. And boy, does it fit into a PD bag. Magic.

Hi! I think so. But it's best to ask B&H staff just to be sure. So far, I'm using only the kit lens 24-105 for canon R.

Would the Wimberly AP 500 replacement foot attached to a Nikon 500 5.6 pf fit securely on the head?
    Asked by: William
Yes, the Wimberley AP500 quick release replacement foot will work with the Peak Design CF travel tripod. You will first have to remove the two small safety stops from the built-in head in order for the tripod foot to fit.

It is feasible to use a 500mm lens on this, weight wise?
    Asked by: Susie
I don't know if I would put a prime 500mm lens on this tripod, maybe a zoom to 500mm but not a prime. I don't think it is robust enough for such a heavy and costly lens.

    Asked by: Tony
I’m sorry I don’t have the Peak Design Backpack you referenced. However, most of the pics I’ve seen show the tripod inside of it’s bag and sitting inside of the pouch on the outside of the backpack with a Peak Design Strap attaching it securely to the backpack.

    No panning?

    No panning?
    Asked by: Lyman
The Compact Ball Head on the Peak Design Travel Tripod does not have an independent panning function. For our first foray into ball heads, we prioritized space savings and a streamlined interface based around the most common workflows we saw in R&D and user research. Using the Peak Design ball head ring creates a unique and delightful workflow that is different than typical ball heads and we encourage you to give it a try without comparing features 1:1 with other heads. We are aware that the Compact Ball Head may not be ideal for the video-making community or folks who use panning in their photography. Because of this, we hope to have a pan/tilt video in our future product roadmap or an adapter that would work with this current ball head. Similarly, we are closely following feedback about panning functionality and it may similarly influence our development roadmap. For now, we have an add-on adapter that allows our tripod to be used with any 3rd party ball head using a traditional 3/8” screw. If you use panning frequently, this adaptor allows for the integration of that specific functionality. Additionally, we have seen some folks using panning adapters on top of our ball head.
