Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod from Peak Design. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

  • Holds DSRL/mirrorless cameras weighing up to 20 lb

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Reviews

    Great features, light but expensive

I've bought carbon version some weeks ago and he have great features, but it's expensive, for the moment no problems, but I don't try it in the windy day or night ... I will update if I know some issues.

    This is the one!

PD Carbon Fiber tripod is the best I own; I have gone through the spectrum of heavy, Aluminum, and carbon fiber, and this one floats my boat the best! Yes, the cost is steep, but being able to count on and use a tripod that fits every scenario in one package has been difficult until now. Set up is a breeze in less than a minute. Precious time to capture a spur-of-the-moment shot is paramount, and PD has delivered. I am glad I got off the fence and purchased this tripod. I LOVE IT!

Great tripod. So durable and compact. I would get it again, but I will probably never need another one!

This can't be beat for size, weight and portability. No hesitation in packing this for a hike, which means it's actually getting used rather than left in the car! Superb design makes it usable and rigid.

    More than I expected!

I bought this tripod to take when traveling and it has not disappointed. The size fits into my carryon bag and it is so light! With that you would expect it wouldn't be able to handle my 150-600 lens with camera. Surprise it did with no problem.

    Nice compact tripod!

I have a heavy tripod currently and never bring it anywhere because of its size and weight. I do use it at home. We go out to national parks on vacation and I was previously using a small gorilla pod pro which I handed down to my daughter. I decided to pull the trigger on the aluminum version of this because I wasn’t sure if I could justify the price of the carbon fiber. I’m using my tripod a ton now for landscape shots and love that it fits in my Peak Design bag in the side pockets. I would say this purchase as a win because I like using my new tripod and I actually am bringing it with me and using it.

    Great ideas

In fairness, I bought my aluminum version used. I don't think that matters. The space-saving feature is practical, and I like the tool tucked away. I was glad to have that tool when out in the field I discovered that one of my top clamps that's not supposed to move loosened up and I was able to set it back to normal. When closed, it's heavy, but when it's extended, I hardly notice the weight. The bottom legs feel a little thin but didn't appear to have a problem when loaded. I miss being able to pan using the compact ball head, but I have the other-ball-head adapter and that works fine, although of course it doesn't fit into the case with that attached. I love the idea of this tripod and it fits nicely in the side pocket of my Gitzo bag. I just put a water bottle in the other side pocket to balance out the weight, for as long as the water lasts, anyway. Also, these are the ONLY clamp locks that haven't pinched me.

    Not Arca-Type Compatible

I'm a fan of PD products, own many of their products, and feel they deliver some of the best value in the photo industry, so this one was a bit of a surprise: this tripod does not work with any Arca-type attachment I own. I have L-brackets from RRS and PMG and quick plates from other manufactures. They all work with the other Arca-type ball heads I have, but not this tripod. They simply can't lock in. Even if they could, there are two lugs on the top-plate of the ball head that would limit how and where they could lock in, so you wouldn't necessarily be able to balance your camera over the ball head anyway. It seems a great product otherwise, but I honestly couldn't be certain, because the way I use my cameras (with L-brackets), I'd never be able to use it. Shame.

Hi! I think so. But it's best to ask B&H staff just to be sure. So far, I'm using only the kit lens 24-105 for canon R.

Yes, the Wimberley AP500 quick release replacement foot will work with the Peak Design CF travel tripod. You will first have to remove the two small safety stops from the built-in head in order for the tripod foot to fit.

It is feasible to use a 500mm lens on this, weight wise?
    Asked by: Susie
I don't know if I would put a prime 500mm lens on this tripod, maybe a zoom to 500mm but not a prime. I don't think it is robust enough for such a heavy and costly lens.

I’m sorry I don’t have the Peak Design Backpack you referenced. However, most of the pics I’ve seen show the tripod inside of it’s bag and sitting inside of the pouch on the outside of the backpack with a Peak Design Strap attaching it securely to the backpack.

    No panning?

    No panning?
    Asked by: Lyman
The Compact Ball Head on the Peak Design Travel Tripod does not have an independent panning function. For our first foray into ball heads, we prioritized space savings and a streamlined interface based around the most common workflows we saw in R&D and user research. Using the Peak Design ball head ring creates a unique and delightful workflow that is different than typical ball heads and we encourage you to give it a try without comparing features 1:1 with other heads. We are aware that the Compact Ball Head may not be ideal for the video-making community or folks who use panning in their photography. Because of this, we hope to have a pan/tilt video in our future product roadmap or an adapter that would work with this current ball head. Similarly, we are closely following feedback about panning functionality and it may similarly influence our development roadmap. For now, we have an add-on adapter that allows our tripod to be used with any 3rd party ball head using a traditional 3/8” screw. If you use panning frequently, this adaptor allows for the integration of that specific functionality. Additionally, we have seen some folks using panning adapters on top of our ball head.

Can you do portrait orientation for the camera? All the photos show camera in normal landscape orientation.
    Asked by: Jack
The Peak Design CF travel tripod's ballhead supports portrait orientation. You may also keep the ballhead upright while shooting in the portrait orientation by using an L-bracket with your camera.
