Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Overview

Photographers looking for a beautifully designed tripod with a great strength to size and weight ratio will appreciate the Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod from Peak Design. Architecturally inspired, and weighing only 2.8 lb, this innovative tripod reduces folded volume thanks to legs that store closer together than traditional tripods. When folded, the tripod is roughly as thick as a water bottle. Boasting impressive specs, the tripod height adjusts from 5.5 to 60", folds down to only 15.5", holds up to 20 lb, and is constructed from carbon fiber. For fast deployment, the five-section aluminum leg cams can be released at the same time. Ground-level shots are quickly captured by simply reversing the center column.

Epitomizing the expression less is more, is an impressive ergonomic ball head that replaces cumbersome knobs and levers with space-saving locking and adjustment rings. The rings facilitate omnidirectional movements that are locked in place with a simple twist. Crowning the ball head is a quick release system compatible with Peak Design standard plates, and most Arca-type plates. Arca-type L-brackets can be attached by removing the safety pin inside the clamp. Under the center column is a hook for attaching a stabilizing weight.

Included with the tripod are a handsome fabric storage case, a mobile mount, 2.5 and 4mm hex wrenches, and a bushing removal tool.

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod Reviews

A Beautiful Addition to the Peak Design Lineup

Owning 3 Gitzo Tripods which have served me well for decades I didn't take buying a new brand lightly. But knowing the beautiful engineering of Peak Design's clips and plates, and wanting an even more lightweight and compact tripod for travel and backpacking I decided to take the plunge. Bottom line, this tripod is everything the other reviews mention. Ultra light and compact, yet solid and stable. It is my new workhorse when travelling off the grid and to the far flung places of the world.

When I first opened the packaging of the Peak Design travel Tripod, I thought there was some heft to this thing made of carbon fibre and aluminum, it felt solid and heavy for its size, but not overly heavy. This is a nice compact and well-made tripod, for photographers like myself who like to hike and carry a minimal amount of camera gear. The Peak Design Travel tripod can fit inside a normal-sized backpack or strapped onto the side, the zippered case it comes in is well-made and can come in handy for additional carrying options. During use, I have found it to be very sturdy and can hold a surprising amount of weight with some of my biggest cameras. I have even tried using the tripod with my 4x5 view camera including a lens that weighs up to 2.7 kg (6 lbs). Mostly though I will be using this tripod with smaller digital and smaller film cameras. During use, I found that the legs are easy to set up and stay locked in place. The ball head works as it should and is uniquely designed to fit into the top part of the tripod and hidden away when the tripod is compacted and closed up. One thing I would point out is when using the Peak Design ball head in the vertical or portrait position there is limited movement because two of the three "clamps" on the bottom of the head come in contact with the centre post. There are a few solutions that users can try, one is to use an Arca-style "L" bracket, the second is to use a folding Arca-Style "L" bracket and the third is to use a panoramic attachment with a built-in Arca-style plate, I got one that only weights 55 grams (2 oz), and with the panoramic attachment it makes it much easier to make adjustments to the top and bottom part of a picture in portrait configuration also in horizontal mode if one wants to swing the camera left or right. All in all a well-made tripod that I will be using for a large portion of my photographic work.

Hi! I think so. But it's best to ask B&H staff just to be sure. So far, I'm using only the kit lens 24-105 for canon R.

Would the Wimberly AP 500 replacement foot attached to a Nikon 500 5.6 pf fit securely on the head?
    Asked by: William
Yes, the Wimberley AP500 quick release replacement foot will work with the Peak Design CF travel tripod. You will first have to remove the two small safety stops from the built-in head in order for the tripod foot to fit.

The two black screws on the top of the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod are safety stops to prevent to prevent a quick-release plate from accidentally sliding off the head.

It is feasible to use a 500mm lens on this, weight wise?
    Asked by: Susie
I don't know if I would put a prime 500mm lens on this tripod, maybe a zoom to 500mm but not a prime. I don't think it is robust enough for such a heavy and costly lens.

Is the mount compatible with the peak design dual plate v2?
    Asked by: Stephen
Yes, but it only fits sideways (if you consider the bubble level the front/back). If you shoot in portrait orientation the 3 legs on the head limit the panning range of motion. If you plan to shoot a lot in portrait I would go for the regular peak design plate (which comes with the tripod).

Can this fit INSIDE the peak design 20l everyday backpack or only outside?
    Asked by: Tony
I’m sorry I don’t have the Peak Design Backpack you referenced. However, most of the pics I’ve seen show the tripod inside of it’s bag and sitting inside of the pouch on the outside of the backpack with a Peak Design Strap attaching it securely to the backpack.
