Synology DS620slim External HDD/SSD Overview

Built to blend into modern workplaces or apartments, the DiskStation DS620slim 6-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is an all-around file management solution that fulfills professionals' needs of advanced data protection and high-quality media streaming. It supports near-instantaneous snapshot technology and real-time dual-channel H.264/H.265 4K video transcoding and is equipped with six 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD drive bays that support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Basic, and Synology Hybrid RAID. Each RAID mode provides performance gains, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not need the benefits of a RAID, JBOD is also available.

The DS620slim runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J3355 Dual-Core and its 2GB of DDR3L RAM allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving sequential read speeds of up to 226 MB/s and write speeds of up to 198 MB/s. Also featured are two USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports which allows it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the dual integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports that support failover and link aggregation, while also allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications.

The DS620slim is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer an 80 x 80mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design of 20.5 dBA makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The DiskStation DS620slim 6-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes a 250W AC power adapter, a power cable, and two RJ45 LAN cables. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

Synology DS620slim External HDD/SSD Reviews

Compact and powerful

I've been using this NAS for over a year before writing this review. I'd say that I really like its compact size and Synology's DSM is by far the best for family/studio use.

Small, quiet and, almost, movable NAS

I wanted to have a NAS drive that I could use at home and then take for a month+ trip (when I will be able to take it after various quarantines and travel restrictions are relaxed :-)). I bought the enclosure and stuffed it with 6 4TB 2.5 5400RPM Seagate disks (4TB are 15mm high and DS620slim will accommodate them). It was easy to setup - I used 1 disk redundant SHR option. The performance appears to be reasonable of about 108MB/s for both read and write on my gigabit local network according to Blackmagic Design disk speed test which according to them good enough to support work with 2160p25 (but not 2160p30). I haven't tried to do it myself though. My title said almost, movable NAS because it's on the not-that-light side, but definitely I will try to have it as a carry on -- I will not ship it in a luggage though.

I have 4 2TB SSDs loaded into my DS620slim, running SHR-1 with an encrypted Share, and the unit is able to serve files at full gigabit without breaking a sweat. Perfect for having to take a NAS with me for work travel.

Best Desk Storage system for data

I found the Synology data storage system easy to install following their instructions, but I found it best to follow a detailed video made for beginners that I found on YouTube to set up for use. The Pal2tech information was most useful to buy and setup the system

Flexible, plenty of power in a discreet size

I needed to replace my aging HP ProLiant N54L MicroServer, running since 2011. Having replaced the power supply once, I couldn't do much about the end-of-support for WHS 2011 over a year ago. The kicker has been that the Windows client backup agent is not working on a couple OEM images of Windows 10 that I have around here. So I learned about the Synology NAS products and this one, the DS620slim, seemed a perfect fit. The box itself would seem a little pricey, until you factor in the included DSM operating system and the available packages (applications). The Synology software is all business, and that business is securing your data and making it available where you need it. I've worked in IT-fields for decades so setting up the DS620slim was an enjoyable learning experience. The Synology online manual pages are surprisingly helpful and a Google query almost always took me to the right page. All setup and administration is performed through the device's web interface which emulates a complete DSM desktop within the browser window. To someone handy with a PC, the learning curve is probably reasonable given the quality of Synology's web-based support. My choice of the 2.5-inch drive bay size was deliberate. Even with six bays, this is a much smaller box than any of the 3.5-inch models. Today there are ample choices in both 2.5-inch HDD and SDD. I got a couple Western Digital Red SDD's for my main data repository (shared folders visible on the local network) and a couple 4TB HDD's setup as RAID 1 for data backups. If you a large amount of valuable data and require access to it from more than one PC/device, the Synology is an excellent, complete solution.

can you use this with SATA SSDs? Is it fast enough to do 4k editing? any reason not to use SSDs in a NAS?
Asked by: Jaskanwar
It can be used with 2.5" SSDs. Per the Compatibility chart on the Synology website, there are Consumer, Business, NAS, and Enterprise class SSDs that are compatible with this unit. Synology recommends using the NAS or Enterprise-class SSDs, particularly if you expect heavy write action on the unit (SSD life is limited by the number of writes). This unit can do 4K-to-720 transcoding, but I do not know about editing. As far as I know there is no reason not to use SSDs in an NAS. The NAS has a 2 year warranty, and your SSDs may outlive the NAS. That is the only downside, as far as I can tell.

What is max HDD capacity per drive bay?
Asked by: Christopher
The DS620slim only takes 2.5" drives drives up to 15mm high (twice as high as most slim notebook 2.5" drives), not 3.5" up to 1" high (like typical desktop or NAS hard drives) drives. E.g., a 22TB 3.5" will not fit. Same with other, popular 20TB, 18TB, 14TB and 8TB drive sizes in 3.5". Synology has tested the following capacities in 2.5" form factors. NAND SSD (max capacities of model-series): - Micron 5300 PRO (7.68TB) MTFDDAK7T6TDS - Micron 5210 ION (7.68TB) MTFDDAK7T6QDE - Samsung PM883 (7.68TB) MZ7LH7T6HMLA Platter HD (max capacities of model-series): - Seagate BarraCuda (5TB) ST5000LM000 I'm using my DS620slim with (4) 5TB ST5000LM000 platters in RAID-5 (15TB = 13.6TiB usable), and (2) 500GB Crucial MX500 NAND drives in a RAID-1 (500GB = 465GiB usable) read-write SSD Cache. For more information, see Synology's site on the DS620 HDD/SDD compatibility, as well as the SSD Cache articles. The SSD Cache requires 416KiB of RAM per 1TiB of storage, so 192MiB (0.2GiB) of RAM for my 500GB SSD Cache.
