Sony 256GB UHS-II SDXC Overview

By B&H Photo's

The 256GB SF-M UHS-II SDXC Memory Card from Sony features a storage capacity of 256GB and takes advantage of the UHS-II bus to support advanced DSLR functions such as continuous shutter bursts and rapid shooting, as well as raw and JPEG captures. This card is also well-suited for video capture, including 4K, 3D, HFR, and Full HD video, and can achieve maximum read speeds of up to 277 MB/s and maximum write speeds of up to 150 MB/s. Thanks to its V60 speed class rating, minimum write speeds are guaranteed not to drop below 60 MB/s.

UHS-II media achieves its speed through an extra row of pins and while this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-II / V60 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-II / V60. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-II and V30 or U3, or UHS-I and V30 or U3, both of which support minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. If your device does not support U3, this card is compatible with the U1 and Class 10 standards, each of which guarantees minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s. If used in a UHS-I device, this card's read speeds will reach 95 MB/s and its write speeds will max out at 90 MB/s.

As with most Sony cards, this memory card is resistant against water, dust, temperature, UV light, X-rays, and magnets. Use Sony's SD Scan Utility to monitor this card's health, and should the card's data become compromised, you also benefit from the option to download File Rescue software for free to help recover deleted content.

General Features

My Favorite SDXC Cards for Panasonic

I use Sony's M-series SDXC cards with my Panasonic GH5, GH5s and DVX200. Perfect cards to capture high-bitrate 4K ALL-I 400mbps footage. Never an issues, knock on wood. These cards were previously recalled in 2021, but all cards I've purchased from B&H have a small star next to the serial number on the back, which indicated they are the superseded, post-recall version. Thanks Sony anf B&H!

Asked by: Carlotta
For still images yes. For 4K120p video it may have issues as its not a v90 card. You will have to check the settings for the video type you want. I would pick a V90 card if you plan for video and stills.

I have a small problem, I have a couple of sony SD card and they work Very well on my a7SIII but one of the cards take 2 minute too format on Canon 5DIV why? But after i format the SD it works just fine.
Asked by: hasan
The Canon 5D Mark 4 is not fully UHS-2 compatible. You can use a UHS-2 card in the camera but it cannot take advantage of the faster speeds. That is why it takes longer to format in the Canon 5D Mark 4 than it does in your Sony a7sIII.
