Providing a classic normal-length field of view along with an impressive optical design, the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH. is a bright prime lens designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. The f/2 maximum aperture balances speed with overall weight and size, resulting in a portable form factor that can excel in available light conditions. Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness, and the lens also features an apochromatic optical design, which employs anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy. Multi-layer coatings also help to limit flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Complementing the optics is a Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor, which delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications. Normal-length 50mm f/2 lens is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focusing techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Apochromatic design employs anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range for increased color accuracy and clarity.

I just came back from a week at Yellowstone in early February. There were no problems with this lens and the SL2 at temperatures from 0-20 deg F and in snowy conditions. However, the 2 pieces of the lens hood separated. I am not sure of the cause. I am waiting for a replacement from Leica.

Is the focus breathing of this lens very minimal for video use? Thanks.

Yes, the breathing on this lens is minimal. For those that do not know this, breathing is the term that describes the movement of air through a lens as it affects the aperture with the lens is zoomed or focusing. The result of breathing is a slight but noticeable change in exposure.

I am holding the two pieces of the lens hood in my hand. The hood came apart on a recent--February 2020-- trip to Yellowstone. I can not find a reference regarding the materials, but I am fairly certain that the ring that attaches to the lens is metal, but the cylinder section, to which the ring was attached until it broke, is, I believe, plastic lined with a felt-like material so as not to scratch the lens when it is in the storage position. If I am wrong, then I am much stronger than I thought, because I can easily squeeze the cylinder portion, but not the ring portion. I think Rob should check with Leica on this.
