Blackmagic Design 4K Mini Reviews

Loud, no way to power off.

If you are using for monitoring, it's loud, and no way to power off. At $1000.00 you would expect more from Black Magic. The UltraStudio Mini Monitor is a great piece of gear, seems they could make a 4K version of that.

It should be Blackmagic's tagline - their products are well designed... on paper, they have everything you'd want for a reasonable price, but in reality, I've found that I'm forced to live with unexpected compromise. This flawed unit is no different. Video monitoring and loop through from my mac/M1/Adobe sys works great. But I also spent the 1k to get analog audio input from a mixer/microphone - that's where this unit fails. I spent time on the phone with Blackmagic support, there was some vague note that you also needed to loop video into the unit in order to get analog audio - but that didn't work for me (nor should it be an official workaround for analog audio in) - I exchanged the unit, wasting a trip into NYC/B&H to realize that no levels display on unit's LCD... several mics tested - phantom power, no phantom, no levels. The XLR input is for show. The analog 1/4" ins are for show. And this doesn't feel like a firmware fix - the unit is flawed.

Very satisfied!

Very happy with this device. Make sure to have the proper software installed from the Blackmagic site for a smoother installation experience. I work on both Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere, and the device is solid for both!

UltraStudio 4K Mini Thunderbolt 3 Capture & Playback Unit

Small and compact capture and playback device for thunderbolt computers. Works great with a thunderbolt laptop for a mobile solution. Good solid construction and build quality. Good built in confidence monitor with audio meters for viewing. Also has an XLR mic input with phantom power.

This is a great unit as long as it is used as intended.

After reading many of the reviews, I find most problems are user errors. This is great for bringing in 12g cameras to vmix etc to stream. All of these type BM products that are 4k ONLY have the usbc fir updates NOT for connection. USB c is NOT near fast enough to transfer that data. That has to be done over thunderbolt. Yes the new thunderbolt is a usbc connection , but that is the only part that is the same. Thunderbolt and transfer date at 40gb and it works great with a laptop that has thunderbolt. Razer makes many with the 2080 card that does fine.Do your research on BM products before you buy so you get the right unit for the job. We have 6 of these and they are great, again as long as you use them as intended. The only strange part is the two buttons that do nothing. ALSO this is not sold as nor intended to be a switcher so it clearly is only ONE input so one camera.

If you think you can record 4K on the Sd card you're mistaken. The Ultra studio is only an encoder (or pass through). The SD card feature only acts as a card reader and has issues with UHD 4K resolution. Even though I purchased the correct specs for the SD card it does not playback the 4K footage. Another downer is that the unit has to be connected to a computer in order for it to work. There is minimal control on the interface of the unit. It's all for looks unfortunately.
