PORTKEYS BM5 Overview

Designed to add professional monitoring tools to DSLR and mirrorless cameras, the BM5 5.2" 3G-SDI/HDMI Touchscreen Monitor from PORTKEYS offers a bright, 5.2" lightweight monitor with a sharp display and a camera control box.

The 1920 x 1080 LCD panel offers 2200 cd/m² brightness, which can be clearly viewed in daylight, and HDR preview is also supported. The HDMI and SDI inputs support up to 1920 x 1080p video, and an SDI loop-through output allows you to send the image to another display. The monitor also supports HDMI-SDI cross conversion.

The integrated camera controller provides camera control such as record, shutter, focus, and more, depending on which functions are supported by your camera via the control port. A control cable is included to connect your Z CAM E2 camera to the monitor. Separately available cables can be purchased to connect to other camera types. There is also a 4-pin LEMO-type port that allows you to power and control follow focus controllers such as the Tilta Nucleus Nano and Nucleus-M via the monitor.

The monitor features various monitoring tools such as waveform, histogram, false color, and vectorscope as well as focusing aids like peaking, zoom, and markers. At the rear of the monitor, a built-in L-series battery plate accepts a separately available battery or dummy battery for power while an integrated power output can also power your camera via the included cable.

A USB flash drive is included to load custom 3D LUTs via the USB port.

Bright and versatile monitor. Well built. Great price. Menu system UI could use some work.

Disappointing

Bought this to use on top of a gimbal as an operators monitor. I primarily wanted something that was bright (daylight viewable) and accurate, I saw the Komodo control as a cool bonus. On brightness, this monitor really lacks. This is not an alternative to the SmallHD 503. It may technically hit the 2200 nits with the brightness cranked to max, but at that point the contrast and color of your image is completely washed out, making it useless to even determine exposure. At base level brightness and indoors, the colors are pretty good and it's a decent monitor to operate with. The menus are clunky. Poor design if you're used to more common production monitors. There's often input lag that slows you down and gets annoying really quick. Finally, yes the BM5 can control my Komodo, but I typically still use the top screen on the cam because I don't like navigating the menus and it can be unresponsive, especially when you want to make repeated incremental changes to something like ISO or WB.

Trustworthy Image

I needed another monitor for a new Komodo and this was an easy choice as I already have one for my first one. Once you wrap your head around the swipe gestures it is a very easy monitor to use. The image can be trusted and it is more than bright enough for outdoor use. It does burn through batteries so be sure to get a spare.

Clunky

If purchasing for a Z-Cam, you're better off using the iPhone app. The menus aren't very intuitive and the responsiveness is not great. I found myself accidentally recording multiple times.

Overheating

The screen is ultra bright, the exposure tools are very good, the best I have seen, but it gets too hot, I bought 2 units and after 2 years they had irreparable damage due to overheating. The 2 monitors were practically burned and were in perfect condition. maybe a second generation will improve this, for now it's not a good choice.

Claims wide functionality, but does not deliver.

I purchased the Portrays BM5iii-WR for its claim to control sony cameras. I already have a way to control my fx9's, but needed a way to control smaller A7 camera bodies. I tried every possible thing to make this monitor work with the A7-iv and the A7r-iv. Neither completely worked, there was always some feature that would not work such as stop start, or the video feed would cut out after connecting the usb cable. Also, the monitor comes with a bunch of cables, but not the one you need to connect A7 cameras, but B&H carries it. It also doesn't include an AC power supply. I also got the colors to match well enough for different cameras, but after powering down the monitor, the adjustments I made in the color settings would sometimes turn off on their own. The monitor has some great potential. It seems like portrays tried to include a lot of functions, but they don't actually work. The monitor also has the ability to be used in high brightness, but the contrast and colors get washed out, so you would have to make custom adjustments for when you want to have the brightness high. This was also where the custom settings would reset and that would be a time killer on set. Hopefully these issues can be fixed with firmware updates. The firmware I tested this with was: BM5-V3WR.17.44.C19.B26 I would test this monitor in store if you want to use it for camera control or have any kind of decent color/exposure. If those issues are fixed, it could be a decent little monitor. it is small and fairly light. I don't know if it would last because I returned it. One great thing about B&H is that they don't play games if something doesn't work, you can return it.

Zero customer service

While the monitor works with my RED KOMODO, I have had several issues with the monitor and have found NON-EXISTENT customer service. My monitor arrived with one of the L antenna pins broken and I can't get PORTKEYS to respond in any fashion. Since the monitor is useless without the antenna, I think you really have to consider whether buying this is worth it

Does this work with the Komodo yet which do we buy for camera control?
Asked by: Ben
At this point in time of me writing this, 9-10-21, the camera control does work with the Komodo. I have this very setup. You will still need a 12G SDI cable and it will need to be set to SDI mode in both the monitor and camera in order to see the image. The camera control is done wirelessly but once it's done the monitor remembers the settings. From there you simply swipe to switch back and forth.
