Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS Overview

By B&H Photo's

Covering a versatile wide-angle focal length range, the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM from Canon is also characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. This bright design enables working in available light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field. The range of wide focal lengths suits working in a variety of situations, from landscape to documentary shooting, and this zoom is complemented by an advanced optical design that greatly reduces color fringing and distortion for high clarity and sharpness. An Air-Sphere coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in bright conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Image Stabilizer also compensates for up to five stops of camera shake to help produce sharper handheld shots in difficult lighting conditions. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. Additionally, this 15-35mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Wide-angle zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in available light conditions.
Two UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
An Air-Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS Reviews

Great Canon Glass

This is typical quality Canon glass. The even on the widest angle this fast lens gives a great bokeh effect to the photos.

Great for wide angle landscape imagery

The quality of this lens is very high, and I've found that due to the 2.8F I still get really rich images in lower lighting.

Expanded Functionality

I had anticipated a lack of need for this lens due to my focus on people. However, I decided to expand my focus and this lens fills that need. I examined all alternatives to avoid the expense, but watching Dustin Abbots detailed review of this lens and in contrast to alternatives solidified my decision. Now that I have this lens, I don't know why I waited. It, like the other RF zooms, provide the results I want. I am very happy with my purchase through B&H.

Not as good as I had hoped for video

This lens tends to have focus breathing. Using it with my Canon EOS R6 seems to hunt for focus quite a bit and you can see the breathing as it happens. I've shot video and been surprised to find that it was mostly out of focus even with studio lights, eye tracking on, and me sitting still talking to the camera. It would hunt around and focus on something else. I've also been able to hear the USM in some videos even when using an external mic on the shoe. I previously shot with an EOS 90d and EF-S 10-18 and found it much quieter and the focus seemed to work much better with no focus breathing. Disappointed considering the cost of this lens.

Solid Build

This lens has performed above and beyond all my expectations. The technology of the RF lenses is quite impressive.

Great wide constant aperture lens!

I bought this lens to use with my Canon EOS R6. I think it's excellent. I have noticed a little difficulty keeping focus tracking on my eye when shooting CLOG3 but that seems typical. Lens is a bit on the heavy side for run and gun, but overall I'm very satisfied!

Easy Entry to Specialized Lenses

For being reasonably exotic and specialized, this is a very forgiving lens to work with. It's one of the least obtrusive and lightest lenses in the RF/L range, which isn't saying much, but it does feel like air when you switch to it. It allows you to be quick, and almost off-handed with shots and composition with an extremely wide field of view. It is missing the precision of the tighter and brighter L lenses, but I imagine cropping is rare in this FOV range with so much perspective distortion, so it's unlikely that you'll ever see the loss of detail in most final images (I usually end up targeting ~8% of the sensor's resolution and using the full area). It doesn't have a particularly flattering bokeh character, which again isn't normally a concern at wide angles, but can be an issue in macro shots. Over longer distances, larger-scale street scenes in particular, I think it has a fantastic character. It's an easy lens to recommend since, well, Canon isn't Sony and has this lens and not a dozen or more compelling wide angle options.

Excellent lens

It's very sharp and fast to focus. It is an upgrade from the EF 16-35. Nice not to have to use the converters (although they work very well.)
