Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Overview

By B&H Photo's

Poised to be the new workhorse zoom, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM is a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length lens characterized by its bright, advanced, and intuitive design. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates a series of aspherical and Ultra-Low Dispersion elements, which greatly reduce a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce sharp and clear imagery. An Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the distinguished optical assets is the Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Image Stabilizer also compensates for up to five stops of camera shake to help produce sharper handheld shots in difficult lighting conditions. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. Additionally, this 24-70mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Three UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Reviews

A Must Have Lens!

This is definitely a must have lens for all professional photographers. The fact that it can zoom as well as take portrait photos at F2.8 makes it awesome. I am currently using it with my Canon EOS R and the photos and videos are amazing. It is expensive, but it is also a game changer. If you can afford it, then go for it.

Going from EF to RF

My biggest question when buying this lens was, is the upgrade worth the upgrade from the 24-70 2.8 EF. That lens was the only lens I usually had with me and stayed on my camera most of the time for video and photos. It's very versatile. I decided I wanted to decrease my bag weight and camera size by going RF. Well... The RF and the EF seem to be about the same size and weight. - the main reason I was upgrading. However, the auto focus is almost silent vs the EF which could sometimes be heard focusing in video mode. The RF focus is way snappier which will be way better in low light portraits at events. And it's sharper. The control ring is whatever, I sometimes use it, but having the spot reversed to the end of the lens and most of time under the reversed hood, I won't use it too much. Wish all of the RF lenses were designed with the focus, zoom ring and control all in the same spots. Come on Canon, WTF- a lot of photographers are OCD with that stuff. The zoom ring is bi-leveled which was weird at first, but don't mind it after getting used to it. And the zoom is a bigger turn than I'm used to. Overall, it's faster, sharper, cleaner than the EF. But... is it worth the upgrade from the EF?? well, I have another camera which I'm happy to put the EF on, 1DX III, So I don't mind having two of the essentially same lens - but I'd say the upgrade isn't big enough to justify it if it wasn't my main and favorite lens. I'm happy I have it though. Excited to work with it more!

Upgraded from EF lens

I switched to mirrorless less than a year ago and was using the adapters to use my old EF lenses on my new mirrorless body. I had a couple issues with my (okay it's rather old and beat up after at least 6-8 years of constant use) EF 24-70 lens connecting and communicating properly with the new body, and as a full time wedding photographer I can't take the risk of it stopping in the middle of a wedding, so I upgraded to the mirrorless lens. Absolutely perfect connection to the mirrorless body, functions perfectly. Super high quality. Lightning fast focus. Highly recommend this portrait lens to anyone!

This is the 3rd and best Canon 24-70 Lens that I have owned! It is by far the sharpest. I find that my Rf 24-70 and Rf 100-500 lenses are handling most of my photography.

The BEST 24-70 out there

I upgraded from the EF version1 and the difference is HUGE. I l always wished the EF version had IS and was sharper. This lens does both those things and makes it one of Canon's best workhorse zoom lenses (of course the 28-70 is the ultimate). I couldn't be happier with this lens and it will probably be on my R5 the most.

Everything & MORE!

I purchased this lens for my mirrorless EOS R. I had been previously using my EF 24-70 F 2.8 lens with an adapter but found that sometimes it just did not want to talk to the camera and/or hesitated before it took the photo. I found myself missing some shots. This lens never misses a shot. The speed on focusing, sharpness and clarity is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I also have an RF 24-105 F4 and although its great for daytime, the RF 24-70 F2.8 truly is the lens to have! You will NOT be disappointed with this one.
