Made for the Moment
Presenting a versatile feature-set in an especially compact design, the Sony a6100 is an APS-C-format mirrorless camera well-suited for stills and video applications. Based on a hybrid concept, the a6100 mixes strong an advanced sensor design and fast, intelligent AF capabilities with excellent video quality and intuitive handling for a sleek, carry-everywhere camera to capture your day-to-day adventures.
24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Processor
A revised APS-C-format 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor realizes smooth, nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity from ISO 100-32000, which can further be expanded to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor features a unique design that utilizes thin copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an enhanced front-end LSI to boost light-gathering abilities, reduce noise, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording. The sensor and BIONZ X processor combination also avails a top continuous-shooting rate of 11 fps with AF and AE and permits 14-bit raw file output for a wide tonal and color scale.
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
  • Internal recording of UHD 4K video is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps using the full width of the sensor with 8-bit 4:2:0 color sampling using the 100Mbps XAVC S codec.
  • Oversampled 4K recording is also possible, which uses a 6K capture area within the Super 35 area, for greater detail. This full pixel readout is void of pixel binning for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing.
  • Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps. The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x Slow& Quick Motion (S&Q) movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p.
  • In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.
  • 4K video recording also avails the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file.
4D FOCUS
Covering nearly the entire sensor area, a powerful 4D FOCUS system incorporates 425 on-chip phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection areas for precise focusing in as little as 0.02 seconds. The density of focusing points from this hybrid AF system also enables High-density Tracking AF Technology, which is adept at tracking moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions.
  • Real-time Eye AF can be used to base focus on recognized human subjects' eyes for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes and for both stills and video.
  • Eye AF can be used when photographing animal subjects, too, with any focusing mode when shooting stills.
  • Lock-on AF maintains focus on moving subjects throughout the use of a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject
  • Expand Flexible Spot employs neighboring focus points to retain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus
  • The Focus Magnifier function can be used for critical focus when homing in on minute subject details
  • Rear touchscreen can be used for Touch Focus and Touch Tracking control and a Touchpad Focus Control mode lets you use the rear screen intuitively while keeping your eye to the viewfinder
  • In addition to autofocus, the a6100 also features a Peaking MF function to benefit manual focus control by highlighted sharp edges of contrast for a more objective means of acquiring sharp focus
Body Design and Connectivity
  • The SVGA Tru-Finder 1.44m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, high-resolution means for eye-level monitoring.
  • A 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen can be tilted 180° upward or 74° downward to suit working from high and low angles. The screen also incorporates White Magic technology with an RGBW pixel structure for increased brightness to support use in daylight conditions.
  • The touchscreen design avails access to Touch Focus control, for immediate focus point selection, as well as a Touchpad function which lets you smoothly and intuitively select a focus point on the screen while you're looking into the viewfinder.
  • Integrated 3.5mm microphone ports afford greater control over audio during video recording.
  • The included NP-FW50 rechargeable lithium-ion is rated for approximately 420 shots per charge when working with the LCD screen.
  • In addition to the battery, the a6100 can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery. This connection can also be used to charge the battery.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a6100 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.

Sony A6100 Reviews

Great features and much needed upgrade!

Bought only two days ago and I am already in love with it coming from a non-mirrorless dslr canon camera! I especially love the lens options and the clarity of it!

Nice Camera

I have a Sony Alpha 77, and need something smaller. This fit the bill. The camera is light and small in size. It has the features that the A77 does plus some more. The connection to the phone for control and uploading to the camera. The 16-50 lens has a button on it to zoom the lens smoothly for doing video. The video was one thing that I did not use on my other camera, zoom in and out was tough. Ready to learn more about this camera.

I just received my Sony 6100A and have used it 4 times for indoor basketball and indoor parties. There are so many great options with the camera. I also chose to buy 2 lenses which add great versatility.

Very happy with the images straight out of the camera. I mostly shoot landscape photos very happy with the colors of the jpegs. I would definitely recommend this camera to anybody wanting a small interchangeable lens camera.

It's hard to know what the file will look like.

Sony made some weird decisions with this one. First of all, they like to go for an exaggerated look in their contrast and color. That would be fine, except that the camera's adjustments at their minimum are only just enough to look truly realistic. Sure, the color can look quite faded in full lighting when on the lowest setting, but night shots look just right. Sony just barely squeezes by with these settings. Anyone wanting a faded look on purpose will be disappointed. In fact, it's hard to make the contrast look low at all. This is especially a problem for anyone trying to get light sources into the shot with the intent of fixing it in editing. My biggest complaint, though, is that Sony decided to make the two displays on the camera look different from what goes into the file. It's actually not the displays' fault since the camera can be adjusted for them to look good. It's just not what will be seen in the file. If you're thinking that an added-on display would fix this, it's quite apparent that anything connected to the HDMI port looks eerily similar to the camera's displays. Both seem to be driven by the same internal device that is simply not calibrated to what goes into the files. I seriously don't know what Sony was thinking with this one. Anyone wanting to stream video to the internet is in luck, though. It's possible to adjust the camera's settings to make its displays look great and then trust that those adjustments will look good through the HDMI port. The camera's problem there, though, is that it overheats after maybe an hour. A very quiet cooling fan can fix this. Just have fun finding one.

Versatile camera

I have owned several Sony cameras over the years. Some users may find the menu system intimidating, but once you've mastered the settings you need, the system is quite versatile. Ergonomics is important to me, and the Sony 6100 is comfortable to hold, even with a zoom lens. Because of B+H's fair return policies, I have returned equipment because of design features. The return policy is important to me because I don't have the luxury of visiting a camera store to assess how the features play out in daily usage. Regarding product quality, nothing on the camera feels loose or flimsy. Sony seems to pay particular attention to the dials and buttons for the comfort of the photographer. This comment is not to cast negatives on any other brand sold by B+H, as I have a Canon and I have owned Fujifilm which were impeccably sound. I have always felt confident purchasing from B+H ( not only cameras/lenses) and their business integrity appears to me, above all norms.

When an external monitor is connected via the hdmi-out in 4k, can we still have real-time tracking on the touch screen?
Asked by: NICHOLAS
More than likely that will not be possible. The Auto Focus should still track, but when outputting to an external monitor the monitor on the camera will not have the full display as it normally would, it may not have video at all depending on how you are outputting to the external monitor.
