Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 Overview

Offering an ultra-wide field of view, the Sony E-mount AF 18mm f/2.8 FE from Samyang is also distinguished by its especially compact and lightweight design. The rectilinear wide-angle design is well-suited for landscape, architecture, and interior subjects, as well as being suitable for astrophotography applications. Its optical design includes a series of aspherical, high refractive index, and extra-low dispersion elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations in order to produce well-controlled, sharp, and clear imagery. Additionally, the lens's linear STM autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' AF systems for quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control.

Compact ultra wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 27mm equivalent focal length.
The f/2.8 maximum aperture helps to achieve a compact, lightweight design while remaining suitable fast enough for working in available light conditions.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
Three aspherical elements and two high refractive index elements control spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and resolution.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated linear STM autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' focusing systems for quick, quiet, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length and prevents the front of the lens from rotating during use.
Included lens hood helps to block stray light from causing flare and ghosting.

Mixed it up a bit and bought a NON Sony lens for travel.... saved a little. Extremely impressed with the value and the picture results... excellent product for the money!

For those rare times I need a wider field than 24mm

This lens is small and light weight, easy to carry in a pocket or small sling bag. Autofocus works well with my Sony A74, and the lens is sharp except for the outside edges and corners. The lens hood is thin plastic that feels cheap. I shoot Samyang 35mm and 75mm also, which while small too, feel more solid and with a stronger feeling hood and attachment. I will upgrade from this if I begin using this FOV more.

Makes clicking sounds when recording video

I bought this lens to record videos on my alpha7m3. The lens makes a constant clicking/vibration sound when you press the record button. The sound is loud enough to get pickup by the camera's built in mic especially in a quiet environment.

Lightweight Travel Companion

Love this little lens, it's always with me when I go for travel and hiking. However I did have one issue where the lens autofocus during video caused weird exposure flickering. May be will be fixed via a firmware update but again for that I need a lens station. But again a great bang for the buck!

Decent

Well, I got it here for 299$ and for that money it is a steal. It's shifted towards yellow, it's dull as a rock, hunts focus like drunk daredevil but still, it is a steal all things considered.

Perfect for purpose

The thing about this lens is the size/weight/price For my purpose, it's perfect. I'm building a gear set just for travel. I want small and light. This goes with a FF Sony A7C plus the Sony 28-66. This gives me a wa I can have in my bag with almost no size/weight penalty. AF is good on the A7C. IQ is good especially as it is FF. I definitely recommend this lens.

Good, not great, wide angle lens

I was looking for a cheap wide angle lens for my A7R3 and settled on this option. It is acceptably sharp, and works well. The lens feels very light and plastic-y, and the lens hood is similarly cheap feeling. Not an issue really, because it is cheap and I expected these things going in. My main complaint is the focusing. It takes a bit longer than my Sony lenses to focus, and the focus ring is very sensitive. I take a lot of photos of very fast subjects (race cars), and had to set it to manual to properly catch the scene. When in manual mode, it's very easy to bump the focus ring and have it move since it does not have much resistance. The good thing is being a wide lens, precise focusing is not as critical as other situations. An AF/MF switch on the lens itself and a better damped ring would be welcome additions. Overall it is worth the price, and it will work well until I am in a position to buy a better quality lens.

Does this lens work in both full frame and asp-c modes?
Asked by: Michael
Yes. As the Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE Lens for Sony E is designed for the larger full-frame sensor, it would be compatible for use on both full-frame E-mount cameras and APS-C sensor E-mount cameras. The larger full-frame lenses can be used on the smaller sensor as the larger lens' imaging circle covers the entire smaller sensor. However, if you use a lens designed for a smaller sensor on a camera designed for a larger sensor, the smaller imaging circle will not cover the larger sensor, and will crop the larger sensor and cause you to lose resolution. Simply put, you can put a full-frame lens on a smaller sensor without consequences to resolution. If you put a smaller lens or a larger sensor, the maximum resolution of the larger sensor is cropped.
