Westcott FJ400 Overview

Westcott continues to push the envelope with the introduction of the FJ400 400Ws Strobe with AC/DC Battery. This version of the flash head has a power cord with a plug that's designed for use in the US and North America. The flash head recycles in just 0.9 seconds at full power - an impressive spec for a battery-powered light. Its 9-stop power range makes it readily adaptable to a variety of situations, as do High Speed Sync, Rear Curtain Sync, and TTL capability. Speaking of TTL, the FJ400 radio receiver is compatible with many Canon, Nikon, Sony (with adapter), FUJIFILM, Panasonic Lumix, and Olympus cameras, as well as the Canon RT flash system. With separate purchase of the FJ-X2m Universal Wireless Trigger, you can make power and exposure compensation adjustments at distances up to 985'. The wireless system offers 32 channels with six groups to prevent interference with other photographers or to shoot several individual setups.

The FJ400 runs on a powerful, removable 14.8V, 4400mAh lithium-ion polymer battery that will give you 480 full and thousands of low-power flashes on a 2.5-hour charge. The battery has LED status indicators to keep you appraised of remaining power. A 20W LED modeling light is employed for minimal power drain. Alternatively, when you're shooting in the studio you can run the flash head with AC current using the included adapter. The FJ400 ships with a magnetic 5.5" reflector with three CTO filters to match other fixtures, warm ambient light conditions, or just for creative expression. A magnetic diffusion filter is included to soften the output, as is an insert that allows use of any of Westcott's Rapid Box Switch softboxes. A custom-made travel case is also provided for storage and transport.

Wide Wireless TTL Compatibility
The FJ400's built-in TTL receiver is compatible with many Canon, Nikon, Sony (with adapter), FUJIFILM, Panasonic Lumix, Olympus cameras, and the Canon RT flash system. Make adjustments to the FJ400 from distances up to an impressive 985' with the separately-purchased Universal Wireless Radio Trigger.
Rechargeable, Removable, Powerful LiPo Battery
The FJ400's 14.8V, 4400mAh lithium-ion polymer battery is a removable power source that will provide 480 full power flashes on a 2.5-hour charge. LED charge status lights keep you appraised of the battery's remaining power. Alternatively, when shooting in the studio, you can power the light with the included AC adapter.

Westcott FJ400 Reviews

Quantum Leap in Portable Flash

The Westcott FJ400 was my first flash purchase since I assembled my Lumedyne collection about 30 years ago. The comparison is like upgrading from a vintage B&W television to a 50 flat panel one. In every way the Westcott is a quantum improvement: remote triggering, fast recharging, bright modeling LED light, scalability with additional flash units and variable power level adjustments. The only negative is that the sophisticated power adjustment doesn't allow the user to set the power in watt-seconds. Sometimes simple is better.

Underrated and best in class

In a world of Godox and Profoto, I had always thought of Westcott as an unremarkable also-ran. That is, until I actually used a couple of these FJ400's in a studio photoshoot. The first thing that stood out to me was the fact that the battery doubles as an AC adapter. Genius. Many of us who own battery-powered strobes have had to begrudgingly buy separate AC adapters and carry both to our shoots as well. We fear that either the battery might run out or there's no accessible power outlet, so we prepare for both scenarios. This is not only costly but also cumbersome. The FJ400 elegantly solves this problem and saves you some money right out of the box. What impressed me even more was the performance of these strobes. Now, I'm gonna be hated for saying this, but I have used Profoto many times on set and in my opinion they are no more reliable than other brands. Sure, they are very well designed and built, but they are just as prone to misfiring and other problems as anything else. During my four-hour shoot, the FJ400 did not misfire even ONCE throughout 1000 or so shots. This is phenomenal performance, especially considering the price tag. I own a fleet of Godox strobes which I'm generally pretty happy with, but I left the photoshoot pining after these Westcott strobes and even considering if I should switch. It would certainly cost me a bunch to do so, but at least Westcott uses Bowens mount so all of my modifiers would still work. Maybe someday. I do wish Westcott had done a better job marketing their products. I have no doubt that any photographer using Westcott strobes would be extremely impressed with them, but until they do, they would have no idea how great these are. Here's an idea: do a performance test of these strobes vs. Godox and Profoto. Prove which one is the most reliable and consistent so others don't have to take my words for it ;).

Please resolve the conflicting answers about ...

Please resolve the conflicting answers about Canon ST-E3-RT compatibility: One staff answer says YES ST-E3-RT will trigger the FJ400. But another answer says NO, Westcott has now disabled this compatibility. So which is it?
Asked by: Eric
Westcott has not disabled this compatibility. The ST-E3-RT DOES in face operate the FJ400 Strobe. It is done simply by matching groups, channels, and ID number of the ST-E3-RT and that of the FJ400.

Can you run this off AC power without the battery attached?
Asked by: Elizabeth
No, the AC power input is on the back of the battery. This allows you to charge the battery while shooting, so that you have a full battery when you want to be more portable.
