Initially, the formatting process for Mac was a bit complicated. Once I was able to resolve that, it was smooth sailing! Lots of space and I love the white color. A great backup for all of your important files. I love it!

WD 2TB My Passport Drive for Mac

This is my 4th purchase of the exact same drive. I found it to be reliable and fast. I used it for Time Machine and as a Dropbox external disk space. If you don't have enough disk space on your Mac (who does?) I highly recommend it. I purchased it from B&H since they have the best price and service.

It is amazing how reliable these little external drives are. I started years ago with the one terabyte drives and now get four or five terabytes for the same price. After more than 10 years all of my one terabytes are still going strong, but I am backing them up.

It's only been a few months... but so far so good. Every drive will fail, it's a question of when, not if... so I'm backed up...

The description states that it is "mac compatible with reformatting." Will it work with my late 2015 i-mac using Sierra OS 10.12.6?
Asked by: Wayne
I know that MacOS can read NTFS drives, but not sure you'd be able to write. Your best bet would be to format as ExFat which is read/write for both Windows and Mac for copying files back and forth. You would need to format as HFS+ to use as a Time Machine backup drive.

Is this formatted exfat to be able to work with both PC and Mac to transfer files?
Asked by: Ben
In the 'Overview' tab it says it's formatted NTFS for Windows. If you want to just be able to copy files to/from either Windows or Mac then reformat as exFat. But you must format to HFS+ to use it as a Time Machine drive.

Can I connect directly to a network using an usb to ethernet adapter?
Asked by: Jim
No, you can't use typical drives like the WD 5TB My Passport USB 3.2 Gen 1 External Hard Drive (2019, Black) on a network, as most typical drives will not know how to communicate with the network. For network attached storage you will need to purchase a NAS enclosure, which is basically a small computer housing for drives, that performs the necessary communication with the network for the drives inside. By the way, NAS enclosures also need specific NAS drives for the best performance. See: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=NAS&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma

Can you permanently disable the "256-bit AES hardware encryption" on the drive?
Asked by: G
I suppose I'd reformat and repartition the drive for the most permanent and drastic solution. I'd back up to another drive before I did that, (both the WD Unlocker partition and the encrypted main partition.) Or simply turn it off like Dariusb recommends.
