Apple Mac Pro Late 2019 Overview

Encased within an aluminum housing that completely lifts off for 360° access to the entire system, Apple has completely redesigned the Mac Pro, creating a modular tower system that delivers performance, expansion, and configurability. Designed for professionals who want to push the limits of what a Mac can do, the Mac Pro will serve those who require extreme CPU performance for workflows such as production rendering, 3D film animation, 8K compositing, building complex 3D environments, analyzing huge data sets, running multiple pro applications, playing hundreds of virtual instruments, simulating an app on a dozen iOS devices simultaneously, and other large projects. With a six-channel memory architecture, twelve physical memory slots, and eight PCIe slots, you'll be able to customize and expand the Mac Pro in ways not previously possible.

This Mac Pro is powered by a 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon W Eight-Core processor and 24.5MB of cache memory. The processor can be overclocked to 4.0 GHz, and there is also 32GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC memory. There is 256GB of NVMe SSD storage. Encrypted by the Apple T2 security chip, the SSD module delivers sequential read speeds of up to 2.6 GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2.7 GB/s. Visuals are handled by a single AMD Radeon Pro 580X graphics card.

Additional connectivity is provided by Apple's half-length PCIe 3.0 x4 I/O card, which offers two 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports and two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, which use the USB Type-C interface and support 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2/3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort. The top of the system has two more Thunderbolt 3 ports and all Thunderbolt 3 ports are supported by DisplayPort connections stemming from the GPU. Wired network connectivity is established using dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports for a more reliable and stable connection, or take advantage of Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for wireless connectivity, and pair wireless peripherals with your system via Bluetooth 5.0.

Apple's Mac Pro includes their Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, Magic Mouse 2, a USB Type-C to Lightning cable, and a power cord. Protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty and 90 days of free technical support.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

Enormous Memory Capacity and Expansion
For pros working with the large projects, analyzing huge data sets, or running multiple pro applications, the Mac Pro provides a memory capacity of up to 1.5TB to meet needs as they grow. Featuring a six-channel memory architecture and 12 physical DIMM slots, each of which supports up to a 128GB memory module, plus eight PCI Express expansion slots, which is twice that of the previous-generation Mac Pro tower, pros can customize and expand their system in ways never before possible in a single workstation.
Powerful Graphics Architecture
For pros animating 3D film assets, compositing 8K scenes, and building complex 3D environments, graphics performance is more important than ever. That is why the Mac Pro features the powerful graphics card with up to 56 teraflops of graphics performance in a single system. Its graphics expansion architecture, the Apple MPX Module, features Thunderbolt integration and over 500W of power, both firsts for any graphics card. And for super quiet operation, the MPX Module is cooled by the Mac Pro system thermals. The Mac Pro can be equipped with up to two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo cards.
Apple Afterburner Card
The Mac Pro debuts Afterburner, featuring a programmable ASIC capable of decoding up to 6.3 billion pixels per second. With Afterburner, video editors using high-quality cameras that require the conversion of native file formats into proxies for easy editing can now use native formats right from the camera and decode up to three streams of 8K ProRes RAW video and 12 streams of 4K ProRes RAW video in real time, virtually eliminating proxy workflows.
Modular Enclosure with 360° Access
The design of the Mac Pro starts with a stainless steel space frame with an aluminum housing that lifts off for 360-° access to the entire system. The frame provides a foundation for modularity and flexibility, and incorporates smooth handles for easily moving the Mac Pro around the studio. The housing also features a lattice pattern to maximize airflow and quiet operation. For customers who want to rack mount their Mac Pro in edit bays or machine rooms, an optimized version for rack deployment will be available.
Performance to Transform the Pro Workflow
With up to a 28 core Xeon processor, 56 teraflops of graphics performance, and the Afterburner card, the Mac Pro delivers performance that will transform pro workflows. A number of pro app developers are seeing results that have never been possible in a single workstation.
  • Blackmagic Design brings full CPU and multi-GPU accelerated 8K real-time editing, effects, and color correction in ProRes 4444.
  • Avid can enable support for up to six HDX cards, resulting in more IO, increased voice count, and two times the real-time DSP processing.
  • Maxon's Cinema 4D is seeing 20% faster GPU render performance when compared to a Windows workstation maxed out with three NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 graphics cards.

    After using a 2009 MacPro for the last 11 years, this new MacPro is a world ahead in comparison! Although it is definitely pricey, it is pretty much up to date with current technology. I am a bit disappointed that it did not come with WiFi 6 (AX) and it only had a 256GB SSD in the base model. I still love the machine as it has tons of expandability options. If money was no option, I would have bought a model with a better graphics card, more memory, and a larger primary SSD drive. I'm sure I'll get many years of use from this machine as well! Definitely recommend it if you can afford it!

    Hi, I'm concerned about getting this computer now with an Intel processor that won't be compatible with "the future" in general (hardware and software) due to the Silicon chip upgrade in 2021. Is there a way people who gets this product now can upgrade it to Silicon chip later? Will it be expensive?

    You will not likely be able to change since the motherboard is built for Intel CPUs.

    No, Macs will not run an OS that predates what the machine originally launches with. For example, the 2018 Mac mini launched with High Sierra. If you bought one today that shipped to you with Catalina, you could roll it back to High Sierra because that was the launch OS and is supported. The 2019 Mac Pro launched with MacOS Catalina and will not run anything prior to that.

    Apple does not tell us which OS is installed on any Mac when they ship it to us. It will come down to when this model left the factory line and what OS was available when it was assembled and tested. There is a good chance it has Catalina but we could not guarantee it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
