Awesome piece of kit and so versatile.

Dies in the cold every time

If you shoot outside, don't buy this trigger. You can count on it to die in the cold every time. It can't handle anything lower than about 40 degrees. Take it out of your bag in the cold and you'll get about 5 or 6 flashes out of it before it stops working entirely. I may try wrapping a lens warming around it next time, but who knows if that will work. It's a fine trigger other than the fact you can't actually use it in colder weather.

This product syncs so easy. Very responsive. Great quality

Works good, has flaws.

This is the second trigger I have purchased. The first one died one week out of warranty but Westcott replaced. It appears that the internal wiring is not very strong and leads to premature failure where the strobe will not activate from camera. For the price it is good.

Wescott FJ-X2m flash trigger

Having used Nikon strobes and PocketWiizard transceivers for years, I have finally moved to FJ-400 and FJ-80 strobes with FJ-X2m universal triggers. Wescott allows different strobes and a speedlight to function with multiple camera brands with a single universal trigger. The versatility of the Wescott system is fantastic. This is my third FJ-X2m: one for each camera and a spare.

updated review after 8 months of use

This is an update to previous 5 and 4-star reviews I left for the Westcott FJ-X2m and FJ80 and FJ400. These all worked great with my Canon 5D IV. But then about 2 months ago, the FJ80 failed. The overheat symbol came on (it was not overheated, cool room, maybe 5 flashes), and that was it - never flashed again. I was able to get it replaced under warranty from Westcott. When the FJ80 came back, I now had the Canon R5. One of the other reviewers says these work great with the R5. Mine does not. The FJ-X2m would only sync using rear-curtain, only at 1/60, and only in manual. Then within a day, it began randomly triggering the FJ400 repeatedly. It has now apparently failed and I am sending it in, also under warranty. So while I wait for the second repair, I tried using the FJ80 in host-mode as the trigger for the FJ400. In manual mode, it sync'd no problem. But in TTL mode, the flash output is about 5 stops too low! I have to set the trigger to +3, and the FJ400 to +2 (or vice-versa - they are additive) to get the proper exposure. I have spent more than an hour on calls with tech support - who have been very nice - but the problem is not resolved. All the firmware for each device is up-to-date, but somewhere (is it Canon or Westcott?) there is a communication problem causing massive underexposure. Given that pro's are out there every day with their Canon speedlights working just fine, I can guess where the firmware problems are... So after 8 months of use for this kit, 2 of the 3 items have needed repair, and none of them work as expected with the Canon R5. Very disappointing, I definitely have buyer's remorse. It is too bad because I really like the FJ400, and I liked the system when it all worked on my 5D. But clearly there are quality and reliability problems, not to mention the firmware issues with R5, so as a result, I have to update my rating to 2 stars.

This trigger works so well across the spectrum of all their strobes. I'm looking forward to using it with their units all the way from the FJ 60 up through the 200 and the 400 series lights. So excited about this new unit and all the Westcott lighting products offered!

Will the FJ-X2m operate off camera to manually fire FJ400's while at the subject for flash metering? Would be nice to have a Sekonic module for triggering with the meter...
Asked by: Gary
You can use the trigger off camera and your Sekonic meter just make sure the setting for Sekonic is for flash read minus radio contact. If you're shooting high speed sync, the Sekonic will not read it.
