Canon 90D Overview

A well-rounded setup, the Canon EOS 90D DSLR Camera with 18-135mm and 55-250mm Lenses Kit from B&H bundles the versatile APS-C-format DSLR with the standard EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom and the telephoto EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM zoom.

Canon EOS 90D DSLR Camera with 18-135mm Lens

Situated as a versatile camera with capable photo and video traits, the Canon EOS 90D is a sleek DSLR also characterized by its high-resolution 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor. This updated sensor design achieves enhanced image clarity, resolution, and dynamic range, along with adept sensitivity to ISO 25600 and low noise to suit working in a variety of situations. Combined with advanced image processing, this sensor is also capable of outputting UHD 4K30p and Full HD 120p video, as well as supporting continuous stills shooting rates up to 10 fps. When working with the optical viewfinder, an apt 45-point all cross-type AF system affords fast performance in a range of lighting conditions for tracking moving subjects and working in low light, while the 5481-point Dual Pixel CMOS AF system benefits live-view shooting and movie recording by providing a smooth, natural focusing quality akin to the way a camcorder acquires focus. Complementing the imaging capabilities, the 90D sports a vari-angle touchscreen LCD for intuitive control and compositional freedom, and an optical pentaprism viewfinder provides a bright, clear, and realistic viewing means characteristic of the DSLR shooting experience. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allow you to pair mobile devices with the camera to wirelessly transfer files for sharing your photos and movies online.

32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor

Featuring an impressively high-resolution 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor, the 90D is capable of producing imagery with notable clarity and dynamic range, as well as a broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 and low noise to support working in difficult lighting situations. The sensor and image processor also realize fast performance throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 10 fps, record UHD 4K30p video, or record high-speed Full HD 1080p video at 120 fps.

45-Point All Cross-Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems

Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a wide-area 45-point all cross-type phase-detection autofocus system provides quick and precise focusing in difficult lighting conditions down to -3 EV. For working with telephoto lenses fitted with extenders, 27 of the points are capable of focusing down to f/8 and the center dual cross-type offers increased precision at brighter aperture values. The cross-type design of the sensors affords greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects. Making use of the 45-points is a series of four AF area selection modes, including single-point AF; Zone AF, where you can select from one of nine AF zones; Large Zone AF, which offers a choice of three selectable zones; and 45-point AF auto selection, which allows the camera to select a single point automatically.

When recording video or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that features 5481 selectable autofocus points. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. Dual Pixel CMOS AF integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.

Body Design and Wireless Connectivity

  • Touchscreen 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to permit working from high and low angles and the touchscreen design facilitates intuitive control over menu navigation and touch-to-focus operation.
  • The pentaprism type optical viewfinder offers 100% frame coverage for high compositional accuracy when shooting at eye-level. Additionally, further aiding shooting with the viewfinder, AF points and mode, compositional grids, a horizontal electronic level, and other assistive features can be displayed during use.
  • Included LP-E6N battery provides approximately 1300 shots per charge.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device and Bluetooth connectivity permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities when using the Canon Camera Connect app. This app also enables a mobile raw-editing workflow for greater post-production freedom.

Other Camera Features

  • In-camera 4K time-lapses can be produced, along with 4K frame grabs for effectively shooting 8MP stills at up to 30 fps.
  • A revised 220000-pixel AE metering sensor benefits both autofocus and exposure metering precision and enables Color Tracking for more accurately detecting skin colors.
  • EOS iTR autofocus provides face detection for refined focus control when shooting portraits.
  • Electronic shutter function permits working with shutter speeds up to 1/16000 of a second.

EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

Included with the camera body is the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, which provides a 28.8-216mm equivalent focal-length range. One ultra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design, along with one aspherical element, to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as limit spherical aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness. The lens is also distinguished by a NANO USM focusing system, which offers a combination of a fast, stills-optimized ring-type Ultrasonic Motor and a smooth, silent video-optimized stepping motor for all-around focusing performance to benefit multimedia image-makers. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers notably quicker performance throughout the zoom range for more responsive shooting from near to far. Additionally, also aiding both photo and movie recording, an Image Stabilizer system compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Canon 90D Reviews

Excellent features in a light weight camera

I have (2) other Canon cameras -- 6Dii & 7Dii. I use both of these for travel photography with different lenses so I do NOT need to change lenses in the field. I recently purchased a heavy' Tamron 150-600 lens for bird photography, and a very light weight (used) Canon SL1 to use with this lens. Unfortunately, this SL1 camera did not produce very good images, so I recently purchased a new 90D camera to use with this Tamron lens. I recently went on a 1 day field trip to a local bird refuge to try this new combination. IT PRODUCED EXCELLENT RESULTS. The 90D has a 32MP sensor, so there is much less noise with images taken at high ISO. (necessary for bird photos in early morning light at high shutter speeds). The 90D also has (2) Custom Settings on its mode dial so I can use one custom setting for birds sitting on a branch (higher DOF) and a different setting for Birds in Flight (higher shutter speeds). The 90D is also lighter weight than either the 6D or 7D, which make handholding a long telephoto lens easier. This camera also has Focus Stacking capability, so I can use it to take much better Macro images of flowers and small insects. I have not yet had the time to use this feature. The only feature lacking in this 90D camera body is no GPS location embedded in the image Metadata. Overall I am very pleased with the 90D and also with the quick delivery service I get from B&H.

I was looking for a hybrid camera to shoot a docu series at work. Often times I don't have more time than it takes to grab a camera and go. For the price, this thing really packs a punch. On paper, the video specs are okay, certainly not amazing, and most people shooting video would turn their noses up at the spec list. However, what draws me to Canon cameras is HOW they use the specs. It might have less stops of latitude than other cameras, but the highlights have a smooth transition when they blow out, and the shadows fall off gradually in a beautiful way. In low light, nothing holds a candle to the A7siii, but the 90D holds its own. It is pretty decent at 3200ISO. When the image gets noisy, the noise behaves more like film grain. It's not distracting. Rather, it adds texture and life to the image. It shoots UHD at 24fps, which is enough for most applications. It can shoot 1080p at 120fps, which still holds up well. It has 4:2:0 8-bit color, but if you've spent any time grading these files, you'd know they hold up to some surprising color grading. Very beautiful, cinematic skin tones. The digital image stabilization and the focus assist is amazing. Saves me a lot. No c-log, but I can survive without it because we have cinema cameras at work. The cr3 raw photos are mind blowing. They can be pushed and pulled by 2-3 stops. I took a photo I thought was blown out, but when I brought it into lightroom, the data was still there. The more I play with the 4k mode, the more I want to try it as an A Camera on a short film. The more I use this camera, the more I realize how great a purchase it was.

Not for a nature photographer

I assumed the camera had GPS capabilities. It doesn't. I haven't used the camera much but photos seem OK. BUT, as a nature photographer, GPS capabilities are very important. I wanted to replace my 7D Mk II with this camera because of more mp, but it will only be used sparingly. Canon has missed out on a replacement for the 7D.

I decided to buy through B&H rather than Amazon for a couple reasons. B&H was slightly cheap but primarily, I thought if a problem by chance would arise I would be better off dealing with B&H in getting results in correcting the problem.

Nice Camera...

As with many Canon cameras, it's a good camera. I'm a bit surprised how Cheap it feels. Very light but, it's also less expensive than my 7D and 5D cameras which, in all fairness, are at least twice the price, but also twice as rugged. Not sure why they excluded 4K video as the 80D had it. I will say that it does come equipped with a lot of great features... including WiFi and remote access via phone. All in all... If it does the job of sitting on top of my Ronin Gimbal and getting the job done, I'll be happy.

I just pruchased the EOS 90D which uses CR3 files. I still want to use my EOS 7D and Powershot SX60HS, which use CR2 files. Will they be compatible with CR3?
Asked by: Karen
The type of file CR3 and CR2 is only related to the software you use to process if you are shooting raw. Best is to have the latest software so you can process both files.

I am wanting to be able to use my DJI Raven Eye ...

I am wanting to be able to use my DJI Raven Eye (HDMI Out) with the 90D and have the display on the camera active and on the Raven Eye output. I can not find a way to do this. There is an option for the Clean 4K out which leaves the display on but will not record to the card. Does anyone have a workaround for this?
Asked by: William
I contacted DJI concerning your inquiry. According to DJI, when you use the Canon EOS 90D with the DJI Ronin Raveneye Image Transmission System, the camera screen will display the image. The DJI Ronin Raveneye Image Transmission System does not store the original photo/video of the camera. If you need further assistance, you may contact DJI directly by e-mailing them at [email protected]

There is a 1/16000s shutter speed in 90D's specifications. How to get an access to the shutter speeds faster than 1/8000s?
Asked by: Andrzej
You can set the 90D to electronic shutter under shutter mode in the menu and then you will be able to use that higher 1/16000 speed, but that is an electronic shutter that has drawbacks. Flash photography does not work in electronic shutter and fast action may cause distortions in the image. The main advantage of electronic shutter is not the speed of the shutter, but that the picture is taken without a shutter sound, so it works better in areas where you do not want to make a noise when photographing.

What means exactly "digital image stabilization"? ...

What means exactly "digital image stabilization"? Does it really stabilize like Sony models do?
Asked by: Marcelo
Sony stabilizes the image by physically moving the image sensor to counteract your own movements, your shaking hands. Digital stabilization is completely different. The camera compares consecutive video images and overlays the images on top of each other so that the objects in the images are properly aligned. Therefore you get the illusion that the video is steady. The downside is that the finished video ends up being cropped.

Atomos' list is not all-inclusive. Technically, any camera with a clean HDMI output can be supported. :) Certain features might not work fully with it (potentially HDMI trigger, although it should work), but I don't think we foresee any problems with the 90D and the Ninja V.
