Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Overview

Versatile Telephoto Zoom Lens for EOS RF-Mount Mirrorless Cameras

This impressive L-Series lens offers a telephoto zoom focal length for getting closer to faraway subjects. Canon's lightest and shortest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens ever, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM is engineered to make traveling more comfortable, offering a compact and portable design that's easy to pack and carry wherever you go.

Constant f/2.8 Aperture

  • Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
  • The front and rear elements feature a protective Fluorine coating to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning significantly easier.

Advanced Optical Design

  • One UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) element and one Super UD element help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
  • Two aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.

Dual Nano USM AF System

Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing.
  • Smooth and nearly silent autofocus suits both photography and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus control available when working in the one-shot AF mode.

Optical Image Stabilization

  • An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops.
  • Enables working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
  • Three discrete IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.

Customizable Control Ring

  • Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.

Analog Controls

  • Focus Limiter switch allows selecting subject focal range.
  • Auto Focus / Manual Focus selector switch
  • image Stabilizer switch and Stabilizer Mode Selector switch.

Rugged, Weather-Resistant Design

  • Weather-resistant design protects against dust and moisture to enable use in inclement conditions.
  • L-Series level vibration shock resistance in the lens barrel, helping to maintain focus and settings even in turbulent situations.

Rotating Tripod Collar

  • Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Reviews

Very Nice - But I Like the EF Version Better

The Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 L was my favorite portrait lens of all time and still is after trying the RF version. The EF version to me was more comfortable in the hand and mainly the zoom ring's action is way smoother. The zoom ring in particular is very stiff and uncomfortable, I shoot runway fashion shows and need to instantly zoom and track the models coming down the runway and this lens is too stiff to do that. I am hoping it will loosen up over time. I do like the smaller size when it collapses, but I never minded the weight or heft of the EF version. Time will tell if I will grow to like this one as much as the EF version.

One lens - many uses

This lens is the latest version of the 'zoom lens family' I recommend when only one lens can be taken on photographic trip. I've taken the EF 70-200mm F2.8 L on multiple trips to Europe and the RF 70-200mm F2.8L is a further refinement of those capabilities at lower weight for mirrorless cameras. The RF 70-200mm F2.8 L further extends the low light capability, particularly in European cathedrals and museums where supplemental flash or tripods are not allowed. At the 70mm aperture it can be useful in inconspicuous street photography, especially when a slightly elevated shooting position such as a staircase or peak of a hill is available.

Love my new lens, it's incredibly fast & sharp

I just upgraded to a Canon R6 and decided to see if all the reviews were true regarding how fast the combo of camera and RF lens were and how sharp the photos turn out. I'm finding that I don't need to sharpen my photos nearly as much as I've been doing in the past. I do wish they made a 18 - 300 mm. Have a feeling a 100 - 500mm lens is in my future.

This is my 3rd Canon 70-200 2.8L in my 25yr career. I have loved each one, but this one is definitely the best so far. I love that its more compact and lighter weigh as compared to my previous EF models.

RD Replacing My EF

Two advantages to using the RF replacement for the EF. The reduction in size and weight of the RF are wonderful. Much easier to carry and the lens can remain mounted while store in my backpack. It also focuses faster than the previous iteration. It's too soon to tell if photo quality is better but everything I read is that it is equally as good if not better.
