Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Overview

Offering versatility and long reach in a notably sleek form factor, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is a flexible telephoto zoom characterized by its bright design and advanced optics. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field. A sophisticated optical design comprises a series of specialized elements, which help to suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for well-controlled imagery. An Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the distinguished optical assets is the Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Image Stabilizer also compensates for up to five stops of camera shake to help produce sharper handheld shots in difficult lighting conditions. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) element and one Super UD element help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Reviews

Well Done

A 70 - 200 f/2.8 lens is a favorite size for many people. This is the one and only for native R mount, and its a good one. The online reviews talk about reduced size and weight compared to the EF and similar versions. They are right, BUT --- its still big and heavy compared to a 50 or 85mm prime. Expensive? Yes. Well-made? Yes. A very good size to have? Yes. My photos with this lens look good, real good BTW. That's not a scientific review, just a user experience.

THE MAGIC LENS

I sold my EF 70-200 mark 3 to get this one because the best just got better. This lens is a must have in your camera bag because it fill all your portraits style, weddings, action sports etc. to fill your shots with magic. It's way light and small than the previous EF version though the EF works extremely well too. You won't regret it. It's worth every single penny. I just have a word for this baby "it's AWESOME"

Great Lens, Worth the Cost

I had used the EF version of this lens with an adapter on my Canon R5 before buying this one and I'm very glad that I did. It's lighter, much more compact, appears to be even sharper and the image stabilization with this lens is truly amazing. I use it to take pictures of everything from people to landscapes to astronomical objects and it excels at everything. It's well worth the cost.

I absolutely love this new RF lens! I had the EF version and this lens is a great upgrade. Lighter, sharper and more compact. It fits in my camera bag and only takes up one space not like the EF version that took up two spots. Well done Canon.

Beautiful image, lightweight lens.

This lens seems lighter compared to the EF lens. The image is amazing and sharp. It looks clean at all focal lengths. This is a great match for the RED Komodo.

Great lens, with a few small issues

This lens replaces an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM plus adapter on our R6. Overall, the whole package is smaller and much easier to travel with and handle. We originally removed the tripod foot, but found that to be the best place to anchor our shoulder sling strap. We use this setup primarily for indoor sports photography. The zoom dial amount is a bit slower (greater turn needed to change zoom) than the old EF version and the dial location a little different, but after an hour of shooting I didn't notice the difference. The hood is a nice improvement over the old one, but I rarely use it. I did encounter one Err 60 Lens error on the first big day shooting, but turned off the power and waited for the camera to shut down and it worked normally after I turned it on again. I only mention it because I never saw a lens error on the EF version despite tens of thousands of pics taken. Overall I definitely recommend this lens if you plan to travel a lot with it or frequently carry your camera. This smaller size and slightly lighter weight is worth it.

No. This lens is not interchangeable with EF teleconverters. For the same reason this lens can NOT be mounted to a DSLR (EF mount) camera. This is a brand new mount, RF.

This lens can i usa mark D5
Asked by: Mahesh
Unfortunately, no. This is an RF mount lens, which are only compatible with Canon mirrorless "R" series cameras. Your camera (think you mean 5D) is an EF mount, meaning it is compatible with any EF lenses (of which there is a huge selection). The EF mount 70-200mm f2.8 is a wonderful lens, and actually cheaper. The main difference (besides the mentioned lens mount and compatibility differences) is that the EF version is internal zoom, meaning the lens barrel does not extend when zooming. Some believe this is better for weather/dust proofing. The RF version extends when zooming, which makes the lens significantly lighter, and also smaller when retracted.

Does this come with the tripod mount that connects to your tripod, or just the "tripod adapter ring" as seen paired with the RF 100mm tripod collar https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1634537-REG/canon_4517c001_unit_tripod_mnt_ring_adptr.html? On Canon's website it doesn't say that it's included.

Good morning, Interested if the Lens hood can still be used at the same time as a 82mm ND Filter placed on the front of the lens with a 77 to 82mm adapter? Would the Lens Hood have to be taken off in that case? Thank you
Asked by: Marc
The hood can only be used when using a 77mm filter since the lens is made for use with 77mm filters. A larger filter would interfere with the manufacturers hood on any lens. If your 82mm filter has front threads you can use a 3rd party screw on 82mm hood instead.

Will it work with the new RF 1.4x and 2.0x extenders? If so, what will be the equivalent f-stop light attenuation, respectively?
Asked by: Jan
Someone stated that they were hoping Canon would be able to make a 2x teleconverter.... It would have been nice for the RF70-200 to also double as an F/5.6 140-400. Theres your answer. Why make a 2x convertor for that lens? It would be a cheap alternative to shelling out $$ for a longer lens.
