20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps as well as 30 fps shooting at 8MP.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 209-point hybrid autofocus system, which uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system also supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Capable of recording more than just stills, the Z50 supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, for slow-motion effects, along with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory cards or to an optional external recorder via HDMI out. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible with the ability to produce a finished UHD 4K video file directly from the camera.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • A large 3.2" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a 180° flip-under tilting design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
  • A 3.6m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a 1.02x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image.
  • Single SD memory card slots supports up to the UHS-I protocol for quickly storing photo and video files.
  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
  • Included EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported when using the optional EH-73P charging AC adapter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens (Black)

Compact and versatile, the Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is a 24-75mm-equivalent zoom designed for DX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Covering a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom range, this lens is well-suited to everyday shooting situations. Its optical design incorporates aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce a variety of aberrations for sharper, clearer image quality throughout the zoom range. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to minimize ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color accuracy in bright and backlit conditions.

The lens's flexible focal length range is complemented by Vibration Reduction image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting. A stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Also, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Standard zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-75mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Four aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Integrated Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Nikon Z50 Reviews

Z50 familiar and very capable

By Chris

This is a great little camera kit. I really appreciate the small lightweight size, built-in flash, and having full-frame Nikons (D6, D850), like the very familiar feel of the menu system. I wanted this kit to use when traveling in Europe, wanting something of better quality and more versatile than my iphone, is super easy (light) and semi waterproof to carry. I paired this with the Megagear MG1819 neoprene wraparound case and have been very happy with this camera..

Just out of the box

Opening the box, everything was wrapped and in order. No problems there. This is my first Nikon in years. So haven't really had time to get into it. But my first picture was great. Seems easy to use right out of box. I was impressed with the shipping, extremely quick. Actually same day I purchased they sent. So that was a big plus. Also ordered extra card which was all there in box.

One Year In - Buyer's Remorse

By Dan

One year in and I have to say that I'm mostly disappointed. I've been a Nikon user for 15 years. Three problems overshadow the two positives for this camera (great size for travel camera, quality images). Problem 1) Autofocus is unreliable at times (electronics glitch?), Problem 2) This is a no go for cold climates - unreliable below 40 Degrees Fahrenheit, unusable below 20 (my DSLRs operate below 0 F), and Problem 3) LCD screen gave out after one year. Delicate cameras have no place in my camera bag - Nikon DSLRs never let me down like this - mirrorless technology needs to toughen up a bit.

A mirrorless camera, Something new!

I've had the z50 for about 10 days now, have shot almost1000 pics. After using my D7100 for 8 years, there is definitely a difference between the two cameras. Out of the box, the mirrorless is more lightweight, which I appreciate, and the 'keepers' that I've had appear to be more sharp, even at a distance. I have much to learn to add to my comfort using the z50, but I think it will be a good camera to have. My usage is casual wildlife photography while walking or at home.

Great camera

Although I've. Been a Canon and then Sony shooter for years, this particular Nikon captured my attention. First, the ergonomic and small form got me interested. Then upon further investigation, I found that the layout of the buttons and dials for quick and easy access to functions look very user friendly. Although I waited for quite a while for this to be in stock (supply chain and all that stuff we've had to get used to!), I feel like it was worth the wait. Additionally the kit lenses come with higher than normal reviews.

Great camera. After using full size for many years, most recently the Nikon 850, I find the mirrorless easy to use and get great results. So far I love it.

Nice small, lightweight camera to compliment my D800e and D850. Great for carrying around when I don't feel like lugging the big boy's around.

What is the highest zoom magnification?

What is the highest zoom magnification?
Asked by: Anthony
The highest zoom magnification is 1.5 x. The lens is 16-50 mm. The camera is a DX which means its sensor is about 2/3 the size of a full size sensor, such as the FX, which also happens to be the same size as 35 mm film frame. The 50 mm lens can be taken as the 1x lens. Because of the smaller sensor size, any lens put in a DX camera will behave as if it is 1.5x bigger, in this case 1.5 x 50 = 75 mm which is about 1.5 x. This works for any lens so that a 200 mm lens works like a 300 mm lens. On the other hand a wide angle lens such as a 16 mm will behave like a 24 mm so the lens has a smaller field of view on a DX.

I have a Z6 that I use with an FTZ adapter, B&H of course. Will the focal length be the same 1.5 for FX lenses it is with other Nikon DX cameras or does that change? Note, I'm assuming the FTZ for my Z6 will work on the Z50.
Asked by: Manuel
Being that the Z50 has a DX sensor, adapting an F mount FX lens with the FTZ on this camera will give you a crop factor of 1.5X. Using a F mount DX lens with the same adapter will maintain the same DX format of that lens.
