The Tether Tools Air Direct Wireless Tethering System is a compact transceiver that provides remote camera control capabilities as well as high-speed raw and JPEG image transfer using a computer or mobile device. Air Direct creates an 802.11ac ad-hoc Wi-Fi network for connecting to a computer or mobile device and can also bridge to an existing network, keeping the computer internet connection accessible when using the device. The Air Direct attaches to a compatible camera via its USB port and can be mounted to accessory shoe or to the side of the camera with an optional Arca Clamp.

Tether Tools AIR DIRECT Overview

The Tether Tools Air Direct Wireless Tethering System is a compact transceiver that provides remote camera control capabilities as well as high-speed raw and JPEG image transfer using a computer or mobile device. Air Direct creates an 802.11ac ad-hoc Wi-Fi network for connecting to a computer or mobile device and can also bridge to an existing network, keeping the computer internet connection accessible when using the device. The Air Direct attaches to a compatible camera via its USB port and can be mounted to accessory shoe or to the side of the camera with an optional Arca Clamp.

Users of Mac or Windows computers installed with tethering software such as Capture One, Adobe Lightroom, Smart Shooter, DarkRoom, Canon EOS Utility, Nikon Camera Control Pro 2, Sony Imaging Edge, FUJIFILM X Acquire, Helicon Remote, AstroDSLR, and many other tethering software programs can maintain their workflow without the limitations associated with physical camera-to-computer cables. For select Canon and Nikon cameras, the Air Remote App provides compatibility with iOS or Android devices.

I shoot a Nikon D5 and D850; neither of which have USB C connections. Will the Tether Tool AIR Direct be affected by an adapter covering the Type C to a USB 3.0?

So I want to verify that I am understanding this correctly based off of all the reviews I have read about this Device. This device works great on the Windows OS but is not very compatible with the MAC OS? I run windows and would love to verify this since the reviews on the web are about 50/50.

The Air Direct is compatible with Windows 10 and newer OS. It is also compatible with all MAC OS. Mac OS Catalina has a special Air Direct Utility that can be used for optimal connectivity with Catalina.

The Air Direct is compatible with all software using PTP to a Mac or Windows device. The Air Direct utility makes this connection on MAC and Windows devices only, so you could custom program a software that uses PTP. You could use the included Air Remote Mobile Application on an iOS or Android device, but would not be able to connect to any other mobile app. If you have questions beyond this, please contact Tether Tools customer support at [email protected].

RE: Cables. Are you sure the cables to connect the Air Direct to your camera are included? I am asking because your page clearly states "Not Included-Essentials-Cables". I wan to place an order today so please advise if I also need to order a cable for my NIkon D850. Thanks.

Several short orange cables are included. one fit my D850, another fit my Z50. Keep in mind only 1 cable per type is included, so best to order a pair of backups anyways.

I read the question about the shoe mount. so If I am using a pocket wizard in my shoe mount there not a place to mount the tether device. So am I right in thinking this might not be best for in studio work?

When using the Tether Tools Air Direct Wireless Tethering System, one need not mount the unit on the "hot shoe" at all, communication with the camera is through the USB connector on the side of the camera. Their are many ways one can mount this "Tether Tools Air Direct System" to a tripod or on a bracket connected to the camera.

Yes, Air Direct is compatible with all cameras that are supported by a tethering software. For the A7, you can connect wirelessly from your camera to computer with Air Direct. Then use either Imaging Edge or Capture One Pro for Sony to control your camera wirelessly and transfer images directly to your software of choice.

How long does it take to transfer a 50 meg raw ...

How long does it take to transfer a 50 meg raw file to the computer? Is the system hung up on that frame until the transfer is complete?

Tether Tools lists the Air Direct as offering transfer rates up to 443Mbps. However, they do not mention a specific file size at this rate. Being that the item is still quite new, more updates should be released very soon.

The Air Direct includes the connection cable needed to tether wirelessly with the Canon 5D Mark IV. It also comes with cables for all other Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus, Leica and Hasselblad cameras.
