Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sleek and ultra-wide describe the 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 Lens from Tamron; a flexible wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. This lens uses a modestly bright maximum aperture to achieve a svelte and lightweight profile that is ideal for everyday, walkaround shooting. Also contributing to its versatility is a half life-size 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 4.3" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects.
Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however is also suitable for use with APS-C models where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Modestly bright f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being suitable for working in available lighting conditions and realizing an impressively compact and lightweight profile.
Three LD (Low Dispersion) elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce increased clarity and color fidelity.
One molded glass aspherical element suppresses distortion and spherical aberrations for greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
Ideal for close-up shooting, this lens offers a half life-size 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 4.3" to suit working at near distances.
OSD stepping motor offers especially quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III Reviews

Pretty fair for the price

The sharpness is amazing for the price, the lens is so light and make a good combo with my a7c, good for vlogging, for landscape and creative portraits, the focus is not that fast but do the job. I'm happy with the lens.

Decent lens

This lens is built fairly well for a low costing lens. One drawback is that there is heavy distortion which will require some post processing. If you are not a professional landscape photographer, I think it's a fun lens that's worth carrying around. This is my fifth Tamron lens and their customer service has always impressed me.

Solid prime lens

Impressive images from a lens in this price range. Sharp and good contrast even at f2.8. The weather seal is also a great feature. Although the close up feature is good it's hard to avoid your own shadow with a lens of only 20 mm. Along with a 50 mm lens this makes a very compact and light outfit for street photography.

Functional for many uses

It is Okay for a low-cost lens, but it does have issues. My copy is not overly sharp and there is color fringing at the corners. It also focus-seeks more than any lens I've ever had to deal with. I end up having to go manual focus when I shouldn't. If the autofocus is that bad they ought to put an MF/AF switch on the lens. But, what did you expect for the price?

Perfect low-cost wide angle lens!

Tamron in general is a good brand for lower-cost lenses, but this is a great option for not breaking the bank. The image is clear and the low aperture is great. It's a fantastic option for anyone who wants an e-mount lens for an affordable price!

Very basic lens

Lots of distortion, color and contrast is bad, and it’s NOT internal focusing plus the lens is very noisy when focusing

Heavy Breather

I've been a Tamron fan for years using with the Sony Alpha cameras. This lens is light weight and great on a gimbal. It's also very affordable. The downside, it's a heavy breather in auto focus. I didn't have the budget for a better lens, and in the past Tamron has come thru both in budget and quality, but I'm not happy with this one.

Very good.

Is this lens ideal for low light videos indoors for YouTube videos?
Asked by: Ricardo
I would say yes. I've used it for many concert or nighttime videos and it performs excellent. So long as you're shooting 1/60 shutter or less you should find the results great. Try to stay away from slow motion or 60fps shooting when it's seriously dark.

After reading some reviews of this lens, I noticed that many mention of barrel distortion and that it is corrected in-camera especially when using Sony Alpha cameras. Is this the case with Sony A7s II and is there an optional menu to turn barrel distortion correction on?
Asked by: Bartosz
Unfortunately the A7SII does not support 3rd party lenses for lens correction in camera. However using computer software such as Capture One you can apply lens corrections later: https://bhpho.to/2RPEJxB

Both are excellent lenses, the image quality between the 2 lenses is negligible and I don't think one is necessarily better than the other.
