Sachtler Ace M Tripod System Overview

The Ace M System Black Edition from Sachtler combines the Ace M fluid head with 75mm bowl, a two-stage aluminum tripod, and a mid-level spreader. Designed for digital cine-style cameras, the Ace M Black Edition supports rigs weighing up to 8.8 pounds. This system is suitable for larger DSLR and mirrorless cameras, as well as pro-style cine cameras.

The Ace M fluid head features five steps of counterbalance and three steps of pan and tilt drag adjustment, plus a zero drag option for pan and tilt. Cameras are mounted using the included slide-in balancing plate. With a plate sliding range of 4.1", the head can adapt to a variety of rig configurations. Additional features include a detachable right-side pan bar and a bubble level. With an integrated flat head base, the Ace M can be used when shooting with a slider.

This 75mm bowl-based combo has a 30.7 to 66.5" height range, and its integrated mid-level spreader aids in quickly setting the tripod up on level or uneven surfaces. The rubber feet at the base of the two-stage legs can be removed, exposing dual spikes for extra stability outdoors. When you've completed shooting, quickly collapse the Ace M Black Edition to 33" and pack it into the included padded case.

Can the leg-angle be locked without the spreader? Most other brands have three angle positions for legs. I can't find a way to lock the angle without the spreader.

I am afraid not: The spreader clamps must be used to lock the leg positions.

Can I mount a Sony A7iii on the back of the plate without it interfering with my lens operation or mount it near the front of plate without plate protruding too far off back of camera to get face close enough to viewfinder after quick release?

The A7iii should fit fine on the Sachtler Ace M System Black Edition with Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader (75mm Bowl) if screwed into the back of the plate not the forward.
