E 16mm f/2.8 Lens with UV Filter Kit Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony E 16mm f/2.8 Lens
Ultra-Wide Pancake Lens
Lightweight and exceptionally compact, the E 16mm f/2.8 Lens from Sony is a suitable travel companion. Providing a 24mm equivalent focal length when mounted to your APS-C-format E-mount camera, this lens will allow photographers to capture wide landscapes and work in tight spaces with ease.
Compact Design, Broad Field of View
  • With its pancake design, the lens only extends 0.9" from the mount, resulting in a compact and lightweight camera system.
  • Designed for use on APS-C format cameras, this 16mm lens will provide a wide-angle perspective with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24mm.
  • Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available lighting and also contributes to the sleek size and lightweight design.
  • This lens is compatible with optical wide-angle and fisheye conversion lenses, which, when used, will convert this lens into an 18mm or 15mm lens, respectively.
Optics and Focusing
  • One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • The lens uses an internal focusing design that contributes to faster autofocus performance as well as a minimum focus distance of 9.4".
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Chiaro 49mm 95-UVAT UV Filter

The 49mm 95-UVAT UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highly-rated protective UV filters with 95% light transmission. It’s useful for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for great image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 95% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it’s thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

95% Light Transmission
Protect your lens while maintaining optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass, Chiaro offers a 95% transmission rate. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Polished Optical Glass
Highly-polished glass is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is polished for flatness that ensures great optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top Knurling
Top knurling is designed to offer a firm grip on the filter when you're attaching or removing it.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

E 16mm f/2.8 Lens with UV Filter Kit Reviews

unique baby

This lens cannot be described in one word good or bad. He is unique in his own way. Tiny, light, very wide-angle but without strong barrel and torsional distortion, with excellent color reproduction and good overall contrast. The main disadvantage for me personally is its low resolution. It does not capture fine details clearly enough, but do I need absolute sharpness in most of my shots? Not sure. So, sometimes you just want to take a walk with a light setup and take a snapshot without bothering, but just for fun. For these purposes, 16/2.8 is a good companion, from f4-5.6 it's pretty capable. Compared to kit 16-50, it has much better color reproduction, but slightly worse (my copies) sharpness. For snapshots, I don't need an annoying moving out and in lens, it's just drive me nuts). So I'm going with 16/2.8 But for guaranteed good results, I would not recommend it. Only for snapshots. Alas, there is nothing better yet in the 24mm equivalent on Sony apsc in such a small form. There is a magnificent Sigma 16 / 1.4, but its size and weight the ruins are all the joy of a long walk 10-15km, it's better to take my 16-70mm with the same dimensions. I would be glad to see a sharper but equally form factor lens in the future.

Perfect for your small pack

I use this on all my adventures, whether hanging from a rope, riding a bike, or fly fishing- it's with me in my pack. Perfect on my a6000.

Awful lens

Sony usually is pretty dependable for quality, but this doesn't deserve the Sony name at all. Yes, it's tiny and it does autofocus and might be alright for video, but it's pretty terrible for photos. It's as soft as a newborn kitten. I'd recommend Sony redesign this lens and seek to replace these ones with a trade-in policy. For photos this is unacceptable in quality (and I am not that demanding on my resolution). I've never been so disappointed with a lens. I'd recommend something else. Sigma's 19mm comes to mind. Good luck.

Not Impressed

Light weight and f2.8, sure. Image quality is low. Don't expect more than what you would get from most kit lenses. I used it with my a6500 on a Ronin SC at a live event and am not too happy with the results. I will never use it for a paying gig. Sample: https://vimeo.com/370718777

Zero Sharpness

I was disappointed with this lens in both daytime and low light situations. This lens is not at all sharp and makes video footage look extremely unprofessional. 10/10 Do not recommend. I would go with the 20mm prime instead. Much more sharp.

Good

Good lenses, but not exceptional. I feel it's autofocus a little slow and it's sharpness is also not what I expected, edges feels always a little blurry. It's small, light but I'm not sure if it's durable. But that's what I think of most Sony products, they are fragile.

question

is this compatible with the Full Frame Alpha 7 ? I mean will it cover the whole surface of the sensor ?
Asked by: Anonymous
The E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Lens is not a full frame lens, so it would not cover the entire a7 sensor. You would need to shoot in APS-C size sensor mode.

question

will this work with the sony alfa 2r
Asked by: Arturo M.
If you are referring to the aR II, you could mount and use the Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens on the aR II. Though, as this is not a full frame lens, you will need to shoot in the APS-C/crop sensor mode. It would not cover the full frame sensor.

will this fit on the sony a7sii? will it need to be in aps-c mode? will that equate to 24mm equivalent iif I was using lenses on the full frame?
Asked by: Jeffrey
Hello Jeffrey. This will physically fit on the a7sII, but it is a crop sensor lens. APS-C mode is a 1.5x crop factor, so it will make it a24mm equivalent.

question

I have this lens and on my Sony a6500, the AF Tracking Sens is grayed-out/disabled. I kind of thought I could track focus/follow focus with this lens on the sony a6500. Was I wrong?
Asked by: Jamison
Unfortunately this lens does not support this feature. Similar options that will support this feature are the Sony 10-18mm f4 and the Sigma 19mm f2.8 lenses.

Asked by: Kadhum
Yes, the Sony E 16mm f/2.8 Lens is definitely good for night photography. The 16mm wide angle focal length, and the bright f2.8 lens aperture will help create sharp images of the Milky Way.

The Sonly E-Mount 16mm f/2.8 lens is not compatible with the T3i, nor is there an adapter that would allow one to mount this lens on a Canon camera.
