Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Overview

A staple of wide-angle versatility, the Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 from Panasonic is an L-mount wide zoom featuring an f/4 constant maximum aperture. An optimized optical design incorporates a series of aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements, to control a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for sharp, clear, well-corrected imagery throughout the zoom range. Complementing the optics is a unique double-magnet linear motor focus system, which provides high-speed response and power while remaining compact in size. The lens also sports a rounded nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to the quality of bokeh, and a weather-sealed construction to suit working in a variety of weather conditions.

Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 24-52.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements and one ultra-high refractive index element help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
The autofocus focus system employs both a double-magnet linear motor to deliver impressively fast and precise focusing performance while remaining compact. A focus clutch mechanism has also been incorporated, which allows for near-instant AF/MF switching.
Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions down to -14°F.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Does this lens work on leica SL? Someone say after few weeks this lens turn default to MF in leica SL, CL.
Asked by: Thang
With a firmware update, this lens should work perfectly on the SL. Just make sure the manual focus clutch is not enabled if you want to use autofocus.

What is the primary difference between this and the "non-pro" lenses. Is the glass the same, but different ring controls?
Asked by: Jason
The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens would be the only 16-35mm lens designed for the Leica L-mount lens mount. The closest lens options to the above lens would be the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI142428L, or the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI185028DCLM. The main difference between the above lens is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L would be wider and would be twice as bright as it has a constant f/2.8 aperture. Both the Panasonic and Sigma lens are considered professional lenses from the respective manufacturers. The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L would be a more economically-priced lens. It has a brighter aperture with a constant f/2.8 aperture and it has a longer optical zoom range, but the optical image quality would not quite be on par as the image quality from the professional lens options listed above. Build quality and optical performance would be main differences between "professional" lenses and standard or entry-level lenses.

Is this fully compatible with the DJI RS2 Gimbal?

Is this fully compatible with the DJI RS2 Gimbal?
Asked by: Jason
The DJI RS 2 Gimbal Stabilizer can work with most lenses. The support weight is part of the concern. The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens is around 1.1 lbs and the gimbal can support up to 10 lbs. It will work but note, that when you zoom the lens you will need to balance the gimbal each time. Most use prime lenses when using a gimbal or do not zoom the lens.

I have the Lumix S 18mm and 35mm f1.8 Prime lenses. Would I be happy replacing both of them with this f4 lens?
Asked by: Douglas
Hi! This versatile lens is ideal for capturing a range of subjects, including landscapes, cityscapes, street scenes and architecture. It is a top choice for both travel photography and everyday shooting, producing stunning images throughout the entire zoom range. Additionally, it is a great option for still photography, vlogging, and other video content. As in the end, this would be a matter of personal preference, we're afraid that an exact answer to this cannot be provided. We recommend you review the specifications of the models to determine which would fit your needs best. -C

I just received this lens and noticed a floating element that moves when I turn the lens end over end. Is this normal, like the focusing elements are free to move until the lens is mounted and camera is powered on?
Asked by: Efrem
While different manufacturers employ different mechanisms for various reasons within their lens (autofocus motors, image stabilization, etc), I believe in this case what you're seeing is part of their double-magnet linear motor AF system. It would most likely also be something that would only activate when the lens is powered.
