Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Overview

Positioned as a workhorse lens among Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless systems, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom characterized by its f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. The bright design suits working in available lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements that greatly reduce a variety of aberrations in order to achieve high sharpness, enhanced clarity, and improved color accuracy. Both Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings have also been applied to improve contrast and color rendering by suppressing lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor, which yields fast, precise, and notably quiet autofocus performance. At the wide end of the zoom range, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 suits working with close-up subjects and an 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality. Additionally, a weather-sealed design benefits working in trying environmental conditions.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C-format models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over depth of field when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Six F Low Dispersion (FLD) and two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
Both Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings have been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
At the wide-angle end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 7.1" is possible with a maximum magnification of 1:2.9 to suit working with close-up subjects. At the telephoto end, the minimum focusing distance is 1.25' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.5.
Integrated AF-L button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a dedicated AF/MF switch and a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extended.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

Using this on an A1, and it's really great. I tried several other mid-range zoom lenses, all of which either started at a focal length of 28mm or had slower apertures. In the end, really just had my heart set on a true 24-70 with f/2.8. The extra 4mm does make a big difference. I was mainly hesitant to try the Sigma Art because of the widespread reports of dust ending up under the front element. Sigma claims this problem is caused by dust at the factory, not poor weather sealing. So the dust is in the lens from day 0, and it should only take some light use to dislodge it and cause it to end up in the front element. After some use, mine appears to be clean, thankfully. Hopefully they've fixed this issue for good. As far as complaints, I wish it had a little faster AF and was fully compatible with the A1's high speed shooting modes. It's certainly very sharp and renders colors really nicely. It's not too heavy, and feels very well-built. I'm really enjoying it. Hard to say anything bad about this lens. I wish I had skipped all the hassle and chosen it from the start. There's a reason it's so popular.

If you don't mind the weight... this is a 5 star

Amazing lens. FAST AF (AutoFocus) lol. Perfect range for video or photo work and built quality is a definite A+. The focus ring is a little bit too soft for my taste but I don't really use manual focus as much as to feel the impact of this quality.

Whenever you zoom in or out the exposure seems to click. It is very subtle but very annoying. You can visibly see the exposure clicking.

Filmmakers: You NEED This Lens

Writing this review from the perspective of a filmmaker and longtime owner of the Sigma 35mm f1.4 - I absolutely LOVE this Sigma 24-70mm! Debated heavily whether or not to purchase this lens, but I wish I would've sooner. For years, I've only used primes. The majority of my lenses are f1.8 or 1.4, so I've become accustomed to having that extra low light performance... as well as having to do lens changes at the *most inconvenient* times and places. This lens in conjunction with the Sony A1 body made my job easier without compromising what matters most. For run and gun filmmaking, weddings, and gimbal work: the subject matter is too unpredictable not to have a zoom lens. And this lens is pretty dang close to being the perfect balance between prime and zoom. Yes, it's f2.8, but shooting Sony, I could shoot with it all day, and already have. At 24mm, it's wide enough for everything. The close focusing distance is outstanding, and the sharpness/bokeh is exactly what you would expect from an Art Series lens. At the same time, having the ability to shoot at 35mm, 50mm, or 70mm lens without changing lenses is such a life-saver. It's well-built, well-balanced, and solid in the hand. Other reviewers have mentioned dust appearing in their lens, which is due to the manufacturing process. It's supposed to surface within a few days of using the lens. Happy to report that my lens isn't suffering from this issue so far. The front glass element is immaculate! VIDEO SHOOTERS: The autofocus is DEAD SILENT and lightning fast!!! For comparison, my Sigma 35mm f1.4 is loud enough to hear ticking noises in the scratch audio. Having owned several G-Master lenses, it's not noticeably any different in terms of focusing accuracy or speed. I actually prefer pulling focus on this Sigma BETTER than pulling focus on my G-Masters. Really the only thing about this lens that I don't like is that at 24mm, straight lines have a small amount of barrel distortion. It only seems to be a problem when shooting photos. Haven't noticed it while shooting video. But keep in mind, this lens is giving you wide angle and telephoto at the same time. In order for the optic to have so much range, of course there's going to be a bit of distortion. This is really splitting hairs here, and the Sony/Tamron 24-70mm variants aren't immune either. In an ideal world, there would be a 10-1000mm F1.0 lens with no distortion. But until that day comes, get this lens instead!!!

Perfect All-in-One

I've rented this Sigma lens a few times from my local shop before ultimately buying it from B&H. I've used it with my Sony a6300 for both my portrait and headshot photography, and it gives me the flexibility I need to run and gun without swapping lenses almost at all. It's crisp, the auto-focus is smooth, and it handles just about everything I throw at it. I decided to finally buy it after shooting a short film recently. I've directed my own films for years, but for this one, I had to run camera and direct, thanks to timing (and the pandemic). I was able to successfully shoot the entire film on this single lens - not something I advocate, when you have the time and budget to use more lenses, mind you. From extreme close-ups to the wide shots, this lens handled it all beautifully. The focus ring is so comfortable and smooth to use, that I generally nailed my focus even on shoulder-mounted tracking and following shots. Are there better lenses out there for specific purposes? Absolutely. But this lens just adapts to such a wide range so well, I can't recommend it highly enough.
