Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Overview

Positioned as a workhorse lens among Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless systems, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom characterized by its f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. The bright design suits working in available lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements that greatly reduce a variety of aberrations in order to achieve high sharpness, enhanced clarity, and improved color accuracy. Both Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings have also been applied to improve contrast and color rendering by suppressing lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor, which yields fast, precise, and notably quiet autofocus performance. At the wide end of the zoom range, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 suits working with close-up subjects and an 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality. Additionally, a weather-sealed design benefits working in trying environmental conditions.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C-format models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over depth of field when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Six F Low Dispersion (FLD) and two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
Both Super Multi-Layer and Nano Porous Coatings have been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
At the wide-angle end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 7.1" is possible with a maximum magnification of 1:2.9 to suit working with close-up subjects. At the telephoto end, the minimum focusing distance is 1.25' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.5.
Integrated AF-L button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a dedicated AF/MF switch and a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extended.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Reviews

Sharp, fast autofocus, not too heavy

This Sigma lens does not disappoint. The image quality is super sharp, pleasing bokeh at f/2.8 and incredibly fast autofocus for photo and video across the aperture range, even in low light.

Great lens! Poor durability.

This lens is so sharp and so nice. And quite compact for a high end 24-70 2.8. Sadly, the zoom mechanism suddenly jammed up after a year and a half. It's not as if I subjected it to any sort of harsh conditions. Just normal use. I'd give it a five star rating if it didn't fail after such a short period of time. What a shame.

Very good

This is a very good all around lens. I'm a documentary filmmaker, and I shoot primarily prime lenses. But I have a film project that requires a lens that can handle most situations, and this is it. It is fast, and the focus is very quick and accurate. It is well worth the money, in my opinion.

This lens is amazing. I've compared it to the Sony version and honestly for what I do I think it's more than enough. I'm a wedding photographer/videographer and portrait photographer. No actual downside to the lens as of yet but I was reading that they have dust issues. I'll post back here as soon and if the issue comes up. Compared to the Sony version the only difference I've noticed is the focusing speed aside from weight which honestly isn't even an issue to me. The Sony focuses faster but in the real world I haven't had issues with the focus speed that I've noticed. I'm 2 weddings in and a couple portrait sessions. The body I'm currently pairing it with is the A1 and a7s3.

Amazing Lens - Get it cleaned / updated with Sigma though

This is an incredible lens at a great price. I would say it's even on par with the latest refresh of the 24-70 Sony GM - sharpness is pretty comparable but it is a tad heavier than the GM for sure. Is that weight savings worth paying double the price? Not in my opinion but YMMV. I will note to anyone buying this lens - if you end up with a model from their original run then you should send it back to Sigma to get it cleaned and have the weather sealing updated - the OG models did not ship with the proper sealing and thus dust etc. can get in there like mine did. This is a known issue with Sigma and they do not charge for the cleaning and install of new parts - I shipped it off and it was back at my house within 5 business days, really great customer care.

I was sold by the hype and mar

I've had this lens for a few months already. It is sharp and well built, however, I might say I am not completely happy with the performance of the lens. I've used it for professional work everyday and the lens already collected some dust. Also, the vignetting is terrible. I switched already to Tamron and I am just waiting for the lens to arrive. If the Tamron doesn't deliver a better quality I will have to go for the new GM. I do mostly portraits so I bought the 35-150. We'll see how it performs. Just hoping it's not just hype and marketing like this lens.

AF misses on occasion

I love this lens, love the Sigma look. Its not very heavy, really like the AF/MF switch. Plus the price! Lots to love HOWEVER I shoot weddings and miss shots with this (even on my A9). So thats a bummer. Cant really run & gun with this one, maybe outdoors is good light. Still,I'm not forking over huge money for the new Sony,I'll make this work.
