CAME-TV Astral Reviews

HORRIBLE..

Not recommended, I really thought it was good product. Today was the first day of using it, it worked great for the first 3 hours of shoot. Unfortunately, after that, the motor starts jittering, we manually calibrated it, once calibrated, the motor won't respond to the focus pull controller. instead its start shaking and making weird noises like it forcing a lot. Once unplugged, we verified the mechanism and nothing was obstructing the wheel of the motor to spin. (it was 18-35 sigma lens) It is impossible to use it at the moment, I am shipping it back. The worst is when you are on set, the last thing you want is a problem like this to happen, especially concerning focus which is essential in our production. I do not recommend it, will get the Tilta Nucleus instead, save yourself some time and money. Better to invest a bit more to get better quality, and less, if no problems at all, than trying to save money with cheaper equipment that will, in the end, cost you way more due to all the technical issues you can encounter. We have videos of the motor jittering and not working if anyone is interested. Really disappointed.

Not good. The motor is jerky, not homogeneous.

I am not happy with this product. The rotation of the motor is absolutely not homogeneous, both with cine and photo lenses. It is impossible to use this follow focus in a professional context where everything has to be in place quickly, and function perfectly. On paper, the motor is powerful enough to be used as a zoom, but the reality is that it is so jerky that it would be madness to use it as a zoom. I did try for a long time to make it work, without success. Came-TV support is not existant, I even sent a video to them showing how bad the motor was going, and they simply disappeared after one email saying that they would have forwarded the request for support to the appropriate person. The concept itself would be very nice, especially the 4 memory buttons would be quite helpful in some situations, but it is really far too jerky. And by the way, after a while the locking lemo mechanism in the motor somehow broke so the cable disconnects and falls if I tilt the engine down. Don't buy this, it is just lost money for something cheap that doesn't work. Get a Tilta N if you are on a budget. I own three of them and they are great, never a problem.

HOT GARBAGE! ---the Down button got stuck on the FIRST shoot. It wouldnt calibrate correctly on 330 degree PROPRER cinema glass. This is cheap but its NOT worth it... Save up by the Tilta if your on a budget or the DJI AVOID this like it is covered in Covid.

Great product... For the price

This is solid gear. Adjustable arm on motor holds solid. VERY torquey motor. Good signal range. Smooth movement and easy lens set-up. Simple. Few options. Two issues: Power cable is bulky and sticks out quite a bit. Also, if you try to crawl the focus at micro speed, the gear does not turn... its signal eventually catches up and the motor whips to the focus on the wheel.

This product delivers. Its operation is wonderfully smooth & powerful with all my primes. Its construction is rugged. Its quick to set up. I wish the LED readout was a little bigger is all.

Great For Beginners, Problematic for Small Focus Adjustments

A great little set if you're just looking for some quick, medium range focus racks. However, when making minute adjustments or corrections, there is a delay. it's noticeable, and kind of jittery. I'd be wary, if you do lots of work with macro focus.

Inexpensive, does the job well, but one drawback

I really like this system. It is super easy to set up, pairs right out of the box, and is very responsive. Getting it going and calibration are very quick and easy, about the same as i have seen with much more expensive systems. The only gripe I have is the way that the controller is charged, which is via a USB-C cable. The manual says that the charge lasts up to 8 hours, and the way I shoot I have not had occasion to test the outer limits of that claim, if I were doing anything other than run and gun documentary (what I use my camera for) this could be a major drawback. I can't see using this on a film set for an all-day shoot without the ability to swap out a battery, because once the charge is done, it is done. I guess you could finagle some kind of system pulling a charge from an external battery that you would carry on your person or attached to the controller or periodically charge during breaks. So, in summation, great for short projects where you can arrive with the battery fully charged. I would be dubious about using on something with a long shooting schedule.

The D-tap port of a battery recognizes the cable and will output power through the cable to the motor.
