Sony a6100 Mirrorless Camera

Made for the Moment

Presenting a versatile feature-set in an especially compact design, the Sony a6100 is an APS-C-format mirrorless camera well-suited for stills and video applications. Based on a hybrid concept, the a6100 mixes strong an advanced sensor design and fast, intelligent AF capabilities with excellent video quality and intuitive handling for a sleek, carry-everywhere camera to capture your day-to-day adventures.

24.2MP APS-C Exmor CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Processor

A revised APS-C-format 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor realizes smooth, nuanced image quality with minimal noise and high sensitivity from ISO 100-32000, which can further be expanded to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor features a unique design that utilizes thin copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an enhanced front-end LSI to boost light-gathering abilities, reduce noise, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording. The sensor and BIONZ X processor combination also avails a top continuous-shooting rate of 11 fps with AF and AE and permits 14-bit raw file output for a wide tonal and color scale.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format

  • Internal recording of UHD 4K video is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps using the full width of the sensor with 8-bit 4:2:0 color sampling using the 100Mbps XAVC S codec.
  • Oversampled 4K recording is also possible, which uses a 6K capture area within the Super 35 area, for greater detail. This full pixel readout is void of pixel binning for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing.
  • Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps. The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x Slow& Quick Motion (S&Q) movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p.
  • In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.
  • 4K video recording also avails the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file.

Covering nearly the entire sensor area, a powerful 4D FOCUS system incorporates 425 on-chip phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection areas for precise focusing in as little as 0.02 seconds. The density of focusing points from this hybrid AF system also enables High-density Tracking AF Technology, which is adept at tracking moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions.
  • Real-time Eye AF can be used to base focus on recognized human subjects' eyes for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes and for both stills and video.
  • Eye AF can be used when photographing animal subjects, too, with any focusing mode when shooting stills.
  • Lock-on AF maintains focus on moving subjects throughout the use of a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject
  • Expand Flexible Spot employs neighboring focus points to retain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus
  • The Focus Magnifier function can be used for critical focus when homing in on minute subject details
  • Rear touchscreen can be used for Touch Focus and Touch Tracking control and a Touchpad Focus Control mode lets you use the rear screen intuitively while keeping your eye to the viewfinder
  • In addition to autofocus, the a6100 also features a Peaking MF function to benefit manual focus control by highlighted sharp edges of contrast for a more objective means of acquiring sharp focus

Body Design and Connectivity

  • The SVGA Tru-Finder 1.44m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, high-resolution means for eye-level monitoring.
  • A 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen can be tilted 180° upward or 74° downward to suit working from high and low angles. The screen also incorporates White Magic technology with an RGBW pixel structure for increased brightness to support use in daylight conditions.
  • The touchscreen design avails access to Touch Focus control, for immediate focus point selection, as well as a Touchpad function which lets you smoothly and intuitively select a focus point on the screen while you're looking into the viewfinder.
  • Integrated 3.5mm microphone ports afford greater control over audio during video recording.
  • The included NP-FW50 rechargeable lithium-ion is rated for approximately 420 shots per charge when working with the LCD screen.
  • In addition to the battery, the a6100 can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery. This connection can also be used to charge the battery.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a6100 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.

I just received my Sony 6100A and have used it 4 times for indoor basketball and indoor parties. There are so many great options with the camera. I also chose to buy 2 lenses which add great versatility.

This camera meet all the criteria I was looking for. it behaves great under low light situations and the best thing of all is the 4k quiality of it. They record in 6k and downgrade it to 4k so the 4k quality end up being better that in other brands. I would totally recommend it

My first Real camera

Up until purchasing this camera, the most modern and sophisticated camera I had used was that of my iPhone. I've never really bothered to dig into the settings, though, I've always been a point and click kind of guy. I have had some decent luck...gaken a few really good snapshots and a decent picture or two, but I have never created anything that I would call a photograph. The same goes with video, I have had a couple of stand alone camcorders from the early 90s and early 2000s. Both were OK but both ended up failing, likely due to lack of use. Now we are in 2021 and everyone is creating content of some sort. I want to up my game and have a tool that will allow me to jump in and go that I won't soon outgrow. YouTube helped me select this camera and YouTube is going to help me figure it out! I am very happy to see that in addition to a myriad of reviews, there also appear to be a bunch of setup, getting started and other tutorials for this camera...basics to advanced! It really helps with the learning curve. The kit lens gets bashed a lot on the internet but in my very limited use so far, it has performed as advertised. I will almost certainly get another lens or two, but I need to learn to work with what I have before I go spending more money. On the topic of price, it feels like I should have paid less, but I understand the whole supply chain thing...and my own impatience and want to have something NOW! Black Friday is around the corner...maybe you will be able to score a great deal. In closing, I gave this wonderful camera 4 stars instead of 5 based mainly on my lack of experience and knowledge. The fact that I haven't quite learned to love it yet doesn't make it any less lovable! I will be growing into and learning about this little beast for a good long while I think! I'm excited to see what I can do!

Very happy with the images straight out of the camera. I mostly shoot landscape photos very happy with the colors of the jpegs. I would definitely recommend this camera to anybody wanting a small interchangeable lens camera.

Great for entry level

This is my first detachable lens camera. Very good so far. First, a couple minor drawbacks: *Separate charger not included, can only be charged by plugging camera in wall with a short USB cable. *Battery life shorter than expected, uses juice much faster than my old p&s. (Aftermarket chargers and back up batteries recommended) *Network connectivity clunky. Easiest way to transfer images is to remove the microchip. Otherwise, you can only use Wi-fi to smartphone (using Sony's awkward app) or USB to PC. *Strap is cheap and uncomfortable (replace it with a Peak) *Only a lens cap for the kit lens. No tether holding the cap on, and no case/cover for the lens if you remove it. Aside from these minor complaints, it's been a great camera. Menus and settings are generally self-explanatory. Sony Alphas have many dedicated fan sites, great for tips and perspectives. Within a couple weeks I'm taking decent photos, and I've hardly scratched the surface of the settings available and I'm still using the kit lens.

When an external monitor is connected via the hdmi-out in 4k, can we still have real-time tracking on the touch screen?
Asked by: NICHOLAS
More than likely that will not be possible. The Auto Focus should still track, but when outputting to an external monitor the monitor on the camera will not have the full display as it normally would, it may not have video at all depending on how you are outputting to the external monitor.

Has there been any power usage improvements over the A6000?
Asked by: Michael
According to Sony, there have been more than 40 improvements made to the a6100 when compared to the a6000. Both cameras use the same battery, with the A6100 giving a slightly better performance than its predecessor, presumably thanks to improvements to efficiency. The A6100 is rated at 380 shots, while the A6000 manages 360. Remember that this is basically a guide to the minimum number of shots that should be possible – it’s usually the case that you can get more out of the camera with careful power management (such as switching it off when not in use).
