Shimoda Designs Action X70 Overview

This Shimoda Designs Action X70 Backpack Starter Kit includes a black Shimoda Designs Action X70 Backpack and a Parisian Nights-colored Shimoda Designs X-Large DV Core Unit.

The Action X70 Backpack is a versatile, multiuse bag that can accommodate the combined interests of the adventure photographer, videographer, multimedia creator, hiker, overnight camper, or mountain sports enthusiast. Inside, its spacious main compartment has a partition system that forms an optional bottom section that enhances the ability to organize this backpack's contents when used with the included Shimoda Designs X-Large DV Core Unit. Constructed for fully-featured digital cinema cameras, the X-Large DV Core Unit is designed for visual recording equipment and accessories that require up to 7.8" of depth protection while inside an upright backpack.

When the partition system is enabled, the space created above the X-Large DV Core Unit can then be dedicated to a variety of items such as outdoor gear or packable clothing that can be reached quickly and conveniently through the backpack's top opening. A rolltop design allows the wearer to easily compress the backpack according to the specific amount of equipment placed inside it, which also serves to effectively seal out moisture and dust. When the backpack is firmly rolled shut, the top can be secured using its integrated side-release buckle closure. For use under inclement weather, a secondary, zippered closure is included along the top of the Action X70 Backpack which also provides access to organizational pockets for items that need to be accessed quickly and conveniently, such as snacks, a pair of sunglasses, or music player earphones.

If the Action X70 Backpack is placed on the ground or a flat surface, complete access to the X-Large DV Core Unit is provided by a swing-out zippered panel that faces the wearer's back. Along the inside of the rear-facing zippered panel is the Action X70 Backpack's 15" laptop sleeve. The backpack's front panel unzips to provide reveal additional organizational pockets as well as space to store packable clothing and can accommodate a hydration pack while featuring an opening for the hydration pack's sip tube along the right of the wearer.

The Action X70 Backpack can be lifted via its built-in haul and side handles, and carried by its adjustable, padded shoulder straps which can be adjusted upward or downward for a better fit. A zipper along the outer edge of the strap which rests over the wearer's left shoulder opens a smartphone pocket, while the outer edge of the strap which rests over the wearer's right shoulder includes a stretchable side pocket that can accommodate a sunscreen tube, insect spray, snacks, or a water bottle. For heavy loads, this backpack's removable waist belt transfers weight to the hips for additional comfort, while the sternum strap further limits unintentional shifting around the wearer.

Featuring a durable, nylon construction, the Action X70 Backpack is built to be weather resistant. To further protect its contents should the bag be placed on a wet surface, the bottom panel is waterproof.

Shimoda Designs Action X70 Reviews

Class Leading Design and Comfort

By Eric

My current pack inventory consists of Mindshift Gear/ThinkTank, F-Stop Gear, Shimoda Designs, and Kata backpacks. I use the Mindshift Gear/ThinkTank Backlight series 26L and 36L, the Firstlight 40L and 45L, F-Stop Gear Shin 80L and Sukha 80L and Tilopa 50L, a Kata TLB-800 specifically for my 800mm with body attached, and of course my Shimoda Designs Action X70 with X-Large DV Core Unit. The Shimoda Designs Action X70 is hands down the most comfortable backpack of all the aforementioned packs due to its adjustable shoulder suspension system and shoulder strap design. With load lifters and shoulder straps that properly fit across the shoulder and chest region with a sternum strap that actually covers my sternum and isn't too high, the X70 allows me to carry more weight comfortably. The hip belt and shoulder straps are simply some of the best I've used in a hiking pack (on par or better than my Arc'teryx Bora 75L) and definitely the best in a camera backpack. The front of the shoulder straps are thicker and wider than other straps and provide much better support and comfort. The material is nice and the magnetic strap slide attachment is sweet. The Action X70 pack has expansion capabilities with the roll-top, easy access, and is definitely the most comfortable on the market right now, so what would I recommend to improve? I am currently using the internal X-large DV Core unit which is pretty sweet itself. I really like the padding thickness and material of the internal dividers as they provide enough padding without taking up too much space. They are certainly easier and more precise to configure than the F-Stop which are too thick and don't adhere well to the ICU because the felt covering of the ICU moves around too much and the hook & loop (Velcro) isn't very strong. The Shimoda Designs core units also have the appropriate amount of Velcro adherence which is more than the F-Stop, but less than the ThinkTank/Mindshift which can be difficult to arrange and guarantee bloody hangnails. I primarily shoot with very long super-telephoto lenses and can easily fit a 600mm f/4 in the X-large DV Core Unit. I can fit my 800mm f/5.6 in it as well, but barely and it bulges the core unit a bit, but can fit. If I could change one thing on the X-Large DV Core Unit it would be to add a half or 1 inch to the height of the X-Large DV Core Unit. The depth is perfect however. I can fit my 70-200mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 135mm f/1.4, and either 800mm f/5.6 or 600mm f/4. I highly recommend the Shimoda Design X70 pack. I prefer it over the F-Stop due to comfort and construction of the internal core unit. While I can fit more in my F-Stop Gear Shin 80L, the X70 is the pack I want to wear and keep going to out of all of the packs I own mentioned here. The ThinkTank and MindShift bags are great for space utilization and can typically hold a bot more than packs with removable inserts, minus the FirstLight 45L, I simply want to wear my X70 over any of these because it's the most comfortable. The X70 side rear door opening side-ways instead of vertically is also convenient and now having used it prefer it over the vertical back flap on the others. The FirstLight 40L is a good pack and can hold a lot, but it is the only pack of all of these that opens from the front which is not ideal, but again I want to use the X70 more. It really is that good.

Comfortable Large Camera Equipment Backpack

Between the shoulder straps (with height adjustment) and hip-belt, I have found the Shimoda Action X70 backpack to be very comfortable with 35 pounds of equipment/gear. I like the simple large side pockets. I like the X-Large DV Core Unit to put most lenses and other equipment on end. It is long enough for a long lens with camera attached at 18 inches. I can fit a 16-inch MacBook Pro (snug). I thought I would like the side-opening cover but miss being able to swing my much smaller MindShift Gear Backlight 27L to the front to open and use as a table to change lenses. That would not work with the Shimoda x70 given its size.

My lifetime bag.

This bag carries my Nikon D5, 24-70, 70-200, 200-500, monitor, batteries, Mavic 3 drone, controller, tripod, trekking poles, sleeping bag, pad, tent, extra clothes....and more! I'm a photographer in Montana that needs to be able to carry a complete camera kit deep into the backcountry. I've used it in snowy alpine conditions, forest fires, and on the river. This bag is super durable and comfy for the weight! A word of warning - if you fill all 77 liters of space in this bag and walk around town, you're going to draw looks. It's large, even for my 6' 2 frame. I appreciate Shimoda's dedication to sustainable manufacturing, and I'm happy to give money to a company that shares my values for respecting the natural world. I highly recommend Shimoda's YouTube channel for a ton of tips with this bag. It's super versitile. A downside...The X-Large DV core unit is awkwardly deep. It's too shallow for a 70-200 to be stored vertically, but when placed horizontal, it rolls back and forth while walking. Expect to get creative with padding to keep your gear in place. I also think the price is pretty high for a backpack, but I suppose that's the price of sustainability. The outer fabric has held up well for me, but your mileage may vary. The only time I was worried about it was when I put 45 pounds of gravel in the bag for a firefighting test. It did not tear, but I don't recommend it. To wrap it up - think carefully about which size bag you really need. I think the X50 is a better fit for most people, but if you need camera gear AND backpacking equipment, this is the best bag on the market.

I finally have a big enough pack

I am very happy with this choice. I can very easily pack all of the photo and video equipment I need for a trip and still bring all I need to camp comfortably for multiple days. The shoulder straps and hip belt and the balance between them and the aluminum frame make the carrying comfortable and easy on my 56 year old body.

An amazing pack!

I received this 70L monster from B & H over the holidays, and was gobsmacked at the size and build quality of the pack. The pack is huge, but doesn't appear to be big or bulky. I managed to pack 5 lenses and 2 camera bodies in the core unit along with other goodies in the main compartment and elsewhere in the pack. When I finished packing, the bag weighed over 35 lbs, but felt light and comfortable, even without the waist strap (I removed the belt to avoid any potential issues with carry on rules, as suggested by Shimoda on youtube!). The airline didn't look twice, and the bag fit comfortably in the overhead bin. From the build quality to the innovative design features and comfort with a big or bigger loads, this Shimoda bag is well worth the price. Much better than my previous Lowepro bags!

Great, with minor flaws

Lots of great adjustments and features to make it your own. Only real flaws for me are that the inserts for your photo gear is not attached and essentially just floats inside the bag. This means that if you set your bag down on a slope and open it, the insert could just fall out. Also the way the hip belt strap attaches to the bag is only plastic, and looks like it could very easily break. It does not appear to be end user replacable. If it did break, the hip belt will not be functional. Overall it is a big step up from Lowepro Whistler 450, but I am cautious about longevity.

Misleading; No Lens/Camera Dividers Included

By Nathaniel

Though the photos for this Backpack show dividers within, there are none and must be purchased separately. The product description needs to be made more clear. Once you purchase the divider system, this backpack becomes overpriced.

How many liter is the hydration bladder? How large a bladder will it take and is the compartment waterproof to protect my camera? Also at this time I weigh 350lbs down from 500lbs. and I stand 5'11" will this fit me? Thank you for your time.
Asked by: Steven
The front panel of the Shimoda Designs Action X70 Backpack Starter Kit with X-Large DV Core Unit (Black) is quite large and should be able to hold a 3L hydration pouch. This bag would comfortably fit a person with a height of 5'11" who weighs 350 lb. The backpack is weather resistant and the bottom panel is waterproof.

Can this bag fit in an overhead compartment (Delta airlines)?
Asked by: Kevin
Based on its exterior dimensions, the Shimoda Action X70 is a little taller than traditionally permitted carry-on backpacks, but can still be allowed if Delta calculates sizes based on total linear dimension. Furthermore, individual flights often have specific restrictions based on boarding class and plane size. We recommend checking with your flight carrier in case restrictions have changed.

The Shimoda Action X70's laptop compartment is too slim to fit such a wide laptop. You will likely have to place it in the bag's front pocket.
