Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Overview

A truly wide-angle prime featuring a rectilinear optical design, the Nikon Z-mount Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D from Venus Optics is specifically meant to limit distortion for clear and accurate portrayals of landscapes and architectural subjects. The optical construction also incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and reduced color fringing. Ultra wide-angle prime designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, this 12mm f/2.8 can also be used with DX models where it provides an 18mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low and difficult lighting conditions.
Rectilinear design renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality. Two aspherical elements are also featured to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.
A Frog Eye Coating has been applied to repel both dust and moisture for added protection when working in inclement conditions.
Manual focus design employs a floating optical system to maintain performance throughout the focusing range of 7.09" to infinity.
Built-in petal-shaped lens hood shields the lens from stray light to reduce flare and ghosting and also protects the front elements from accidental impacts.

question

Is the Canon EF version compatible with the ZhongYi (Mitakon) to Fuji XF Lens Turbo focal reducer? I.e. the rear element doesn't touch the glass elements in the focal reducer.
Asked by: Benjamin H.
This lens is compatible with the Mitakon Zhongyi Lens Turbo Adapter V2 for Full-Frame Canon EF Mount Lens to Fujifilm X Mount APS-C Camera, being that it is a full frame lens.

would this work well with the z6 and the ftz mount adapter?

The Nikon F mount version of this lens will work very well with the full frame Z cameras and the FTZ. You will program this as a non-cpu lens in your camera, 13mm f/2.8 (as Nikon never made a lens to date wider than 13mm so it's the widest that can be programmed at this time).

I get severe distortion on both sides of images in the form of stretching. Is anyone else having this issue or do I have a defective lens?
Asked by: Guy
That sounds like perspective distortion. That is normal. For example ceramic tiles on a wall will look larger, distorted, and stretched in the sides of the photo, but in the center they will look normal. That is perspective distortion. That is the same as going on the bottom of a large building, looking up, and the sides of the building look like they are converging instead of being straight. The zero distortion this Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens has is barrel distortion.

The 12mm lens may be a bit wide, but the image is sharp and will work well with the Blackmagic Pocket 6k if you get the Canon variant of this lens. BH# VE1228CEFS
