Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro... Reviews

Sharp images at a great price

I use this as a studio lens with a StackShot. Impressive images at the price point. A bit bulky and heavy so I will use a different lens for field work. A chip to communicate make, model, focal length and aperture would raise it to 5 stars.

Wasn't expecting much

After shooting with Canon L and Sony macro lenses I wasn't expecting much from this lower priced lens. I've been impressed and the 2x aspect is very beneficial at times. If you don't need AF this is a strong consideration.

This lens is everything Laowa promises it to be. Please see the picture I have uploaded so see how sharp this lens is while rendering saturated colors. Yes, it is a manual lens and it requires a tripod to achieve best results, but this lens is also excellent for subjects other than macro photography. Congrats Laowa! I can highly recommend this lens with confidence.

I've been shooting macro since 2009 and using a great Sigma 150mm 2.8 Macro lens and have produced some amazing images. I purchased the Laowa 100mm 2.8 Macro 2x after watching and reading so many great reviews about the lens. Well...I have to say that this lens is SHARP and produces beautiful images with good contrast and colors on my Canon EOS body. If you are into macro photography....Get yourself one of these Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens...You won't regret it!! This lens works for portraits and many other types of images also. I will note that the lens has a learning curve for beginners but is easily learned and very usable if effort is given. Great and beautifully sharp macro lens!!

Sharp, Well-Built Lens - Great Value

The Laowa 100mm, combined with the Sony A7IV, represents a great macro solution. This lens is built like a tank. The ability to zoom in at 2:1 offers an advantage over most other macro lens offerings. I found the Laowa to be incredibly sharp from f/2.8 - f/11. Even at f/16, diffraction barely impacts photo quality. The Focus Peaking and Zoom features on the Sony A7IV work well with the Laowa to ensure your subject is in focus. Macro photography with a manual-focus lens such as the Laowa does require some patience and practice, however, so expect to spend some time refining your technique. The only improvements I would suggest would be: 1. A slightly firmer clicking mechanism for the aperture ring and, 2. Changing the gear ratio of the manual focus ring to provide more incremental adjustments.

Accessible entry into macro photography!

The Laowa 100mm is a nice investment for someone who is looking to upgrade out of the kit lens. I've been eyeing this lens for almost a year, and after seeing reviews and breakdowns, this lens is well worth it. The manual focus is a great exercise in pushing camera users to learn the in's and out's of their camera settings and more. I encourage any user who wishes to pick up this lens to take into consideration your familiarity with (1) ISO, lighting and settings, (2) and hand strength and control. Any little movement will greatly affect the blur / sharpness radius of your subject whether it's an insect, flower, or other knick-knack.

I have been looking for a macro lens that I could use for other than macro photography and the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO lens fits that bill perfectly. Again B&H photo had the best lens I could have imagined at the right price. As a 100mm lens it is sharp and easy to use and as a macro it is unsurpassed. My use of this great lens has been limited as I was sidelined with serious heart surgery that i still am recovering but I did get to use it enough to know that I have exactly what I want thanks to Venus Optics and B&H photo.

What great macro lens! I have the canon version with auto aperture, and manual focus. I have found it to be very sharp even at f16, although a flash is required when stepped down that far. Setting the focus ring to the magnification you want and then moving the camera to focus has worked very well. having loads of fun with this lens.

Is the RF version really 1.2" longer than the EF version or is that a typo?
Asked by: David
That is more than likely because both lenses are technically identical in design, but the RF flange distance is shorter; hence, the RF-version makes up for this with a longer mount.

I just purchased the RF version of this lens and am having trouble firing the shutter on the EOS R updated to firmware version 1.7. The mounts and I am able to control the image manually, but when I try to take a picture the shutter button doesn't work. Any thoughts?

Make sure the Release Shutter w/o lens is enabled. It sounds like it's potentially disabled. Should be in C.FN5 page in the settings.

With the RF version of the lens, two questions: 1) Does the aperture stay open until the shot is taken like the old cameras? i.e. is the view finder going to be dark? 2) If I set an aperture of 7.1, for example, does it inform the camera of that setting so the camera can figure out the proper exposure?
Asked by: Perry
There is no communication between camera and lens, so you will need to set aperture and shutter speed manually. The viewfinder is blacked out during the exposure.

For the Canon R6, I'm considering the RF (manual aperture) version vs. the EF (auto aperture) version (with Canon adapter). I have no EF lenses and understand that Canon meters wide open and then stops down for the shot. Besides convenience, what are pros/cons of manual vs. auto aperture for macro on a manual focus lens? If there are auto aperture advantages, are they outweighed by any effects of the adapter?
Asked by: Brian
The benefit of having an auto exposure on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon EF (Auto Aperture) is that you will be able to see through the lens because the camera will auto open the exposure to the widest it can go. If you have a manual exposure like on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon RF you will need to open the aperture manually.
