Mitakon Zhongyi Creator 85mm f/2 Overview

By B&H Photo's

A short-telephoto prime for Sony E-mount cameras, the Creator 85mm f/2 Lens from Mitakon Zhongyi is a portrait-length manual focus lens with a de-clicked, silent aperture ring to benefit both still and video applications. The f/2 maximum aperture enables selective focus and shallow depth of field control. The six-element, six-group design is housed within a metal lens barrel, which features printed depth of field and distance scales for greater control over focus placement.

Prime portrait-length 85mm Sony E-mount lens is compatible with full-frame mirrorless digital cameras and can also be used with APS-C-sized sensors where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Manual focus design is complemented by both depth of field and distance scales for using pre-focusing techniques.
The f/2 aperture and ten-blade diaphragm work together to offer a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with selective focus techniques.
All-metal lens barrel features printed depth of field and focus scales. The metal lens mount offers increased durability between the lens and camera.

Mitakon Zhongyi Creator 85mm f/2 Reviews

Great value lens

For under $200 what can I complain about? If you don’t mind full manual (I do a lot of professional video so I don’t) then give it a try. Had a nice creamy bokeh. Focusing ring is a little stiff but I expect that to smooth out the more I use it. It’s also a little heavy but that says more about its build and durability. Doesn’t feel cheap at all. I recommend if you don’t mind full manual.

Good quality for the price!

I wanted to try a 85 mm prime lens for portraiture and I tried this one. I get good image from it and love it on my 1.6x 7DMKII (136mm 35mm equiv. which I love) The construction is good, all metal, and image that come out are good. I'd recommend it; good price, good quality, easy enough to use it.

I like it.

This is a Mitikon 85mm manual lens with a Canon EF mount on a Zhongyi EF- NEX adapter that contains a lens causing the the crop sensor in the camera to capture a full frame image. My copy works very well and takes very sharp, vivid, photos thanks in part, to the Sony's ability to make using manual lenses easy. The lens alone on my Csnon 6D....NOT! Manual focus on the Canon is trying at best and for me almost impossible in low light situations. But I already had a Canon 85mm lens and bought this only for the Sony. I would do it again.

Great!

Exactly what I was hoping for. Nice solid metal build. Great bokeh. The f stop ring is quiet too so would be good for youtubing. It is my new favorite toy.

I Cant say I love them

Ive been playing around with it for some days now, and both the 85mm and 35mm are ok. I dont love the look, but than again they where pretty cheap.

Very good lens for the price

It is absolutely a manual lens, but for the price it is pretty sharp. The construction doesn't seem quite solid but it has a very soft bokeh. The focusing ring is quite soft, and it is easy to get a proper focus, at least with my Sony A7 R2. My lens has a Canon EF mount and I am using it with an adaptor.

Ridiculously TIGHT

I received the lens today and I am returning it today. It seemed very well made until I tried to remove the rear lens cap. In over 20 years of using lenses I have never encountered a rear lens cap attached SO TIGHTLY that it was impossible to remove, even using a padded set of pliers, short of damaging the lens. I had read another review and thought that review highly unusual until it has now happened to me with another Mitakon lens. Ridiculous! What were they thinking!? I guess they must be using robots to attach these rear caps.

Using this with a Pentax KS1 and enjoying it. I mostly take it out on hikes and bird/animal watching.

I have a nikon d3000. Is it safe to assume that this will only work in manual mode for my camera?
Asked by: Jennifer
Correct. You won't have exposure metering either so be prepared to meter separately or go through a very tedious sequence of trial and error exposure adjustments.
