Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH. Overview

Pairing speed and stellar optics, the Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH. is a fast portrait-length lens offering impressive subject separation using an especially shallow depth of field. The bright f/1.5 design is ideal for portraiture but also suits working in low-light conditions. Beyond the fast design, this 90mm f/1.5 is also distinguished by its advanced optical composition that incorporates a pair of aspherical elements to ensure high sharpness and low dispersion, and a floating element system is also employed to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range from 3.3' to infinity. Additionally, this lens has an 11-blade diaphragm to produce an especially pleasing, rounded bokeh quality and a built-in lens hood helps to prevent lens flare and ghosting.

Impressively fast f/1.5 maximum aperture affords notable control over depth of field for selective focus shooting, and also benefits working handheld in low-light conditions.
Short-telephoto 90mm focal length offers a flattering image quality that is well-suited to portraiture and mid-length images, especially when used in conjunction with the shallow depth of field afforded by the bright maximum aperture.
Two large-diameter aspherical elements are used to control spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and reduced distortion.
A floating element system is employed to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, even at the minimum focusing distance of 3.3'.
An 11-blade diaphragm produces a rounded and pleasing bokeh quality.
Built-in extendable lens hood shades and protects the front element to reduce lens flare and ghosting. Additionally, the front of the lens is threaded to accept 67mm screw-in filters.

Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH

In the pictures made with a 90mm Summilux the objects in focus stand out with amazing clarity and detail, against the beautifully soft out-of-focus areas, with wide open aperture. This creates a gentle very special mood, quite different from the precision of an apochromatic design (APO) which the Summilux does not have. However, is it justified to spend $13,000 + tax for the Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH lens for this special mood, while the Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH lens costs less than half as much? This is not an easy decision and will depend on the photographer’s priorities. Another disadvantage of the Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH lens is its weight of about 1 kg which makes hand-held focusing difficult; in portrait photography I find myself distracted struggling with the camera rather than focusing on the person. What a relief to switch to my 50 mm lens again! Getting back to my previous point, did I expect the shallow depth of field to be so superior in giving my pictures a dreamy and very special feeling? My decision probably was more of an emotional rather than of a rational nature. What motivated me most was perhaps my intense desire to create an emotional impact in my pictures with a feeling that goes beyond the pleasure of pure technical perfection. The most comprehensive review I have found so far, from a picture, rather than from a technical perspective is by Thorston von Overgaard. You can find his enlightening evaluation in https://overgaard.dk/Leica-90mm-Summilux-f-1-5-review-and-sample-photographs-Page-1.html
