Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens
Super-Telephoto Versatility
Spanning a versatile telephoto range, the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS from Sony is a flexible zoom perfectly suited for nature, wildlife, and sports applications. Its long reach pairs with a modest maximum aperture range to render to a relatively lightweight and portable design and, as a G series lens, optical quality, focus speed, and attention to handling details are also priorities of this well-rounded super-tele zoom.
Long-Reaching, Stabilized Zoom
  • Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this super-telephoto can also be used on APS-C models to achieve an equivalent 300-900mm focal length range.
  • Maximum aperture range of f/5.6-6.3 helps minimize size and weight while providing excellent performance in a variety of applications.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • OSS has three dedicated modes, including panning and viewfinder stabilization priority settings, and can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Internal zoom design limits the overall length of the lens while zooming for more intuitive and comfortable handling.
  • Compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters for further increasing the lens's reach.
G Lens Series
  • Five extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • One aspherical element is placed at the rear of the optical design and reduces distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • A rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Autofocus
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor (DDSSM) AF system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that suits both stills and video applications.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Three customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 7.9', along with a maximum magnification of 0.2x, benefits portraiture and head shots.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
Professional, Durable Design
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
Chiaro Pro 95mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 95mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Reviews

Great lens

I purchased the Sony to replace my Sigma 150-600 dg dn sport. The Sigma is a good lens. When it came to action the sigma could not keep up. The Sony is so much better at tracking birds. The auto focus is superior to the Sigma. I love the internal zoom. This is a great lens for Sony users.

Don't skimp on the filter

Surely, if you can afford getting this lens, then don't cheap out on the 95mm filter. I didn't think it would make a difference, but it does make a small difference, and for wildlife work, that's a big deal. The lens is sharp enough. Do your part and get the hundred-plus dollar multicoated name brand filter.

I'm using this with a Sony a6600, so with the crop sensor, this lens gets me some serious range. It remains to be seen how often I'll actually haul this thing around to shoot, but as an hobbyist, I have been blown away by how close this gets me to my subject.

Simply the sharpest tele-zoom on the market as of today.

I have shot professionally for over 50 years. During that time I have shot Sony, Nikon, and Canon 35 mm and digital camera's. All make exceptional glass for their camera's. I am going on record stating that the Sony 200-600 is probably the sharpest tele-zooms I have ever used. The entire zoom range is accomplished with just a 1/4 turn of the zoom ring. The lens is sharp throughout it's zoom range from 200-600 mm. Combined with the a9, a9II, a1, or A7rIV or V, this lens focuses fast and accurately. I never recommend a teleconverter as I believe the focusing speed is comprised as I shoot mostly birds in flight. This lens also does well on sitting birds. Yes, the lens is not light, but I place my left hand just behind the lens hood and this helps balance the lens as I hand hold all the time, I also recommend the vertical grip be added to any Sony body to help with balancing this lens hand held. I also recommend reversing the tripod collar and using it as a carry handle. Makes the unit much easier to walk around with. I shoot primarily in Florida's wetlands and I generally walk around with this lens. If I walk long distances or I use my bicycle I put this unit on a cotton carrier which works well for me. I am 74 and have little difficulty walking around with this lens. If your thinking about this lens I strongly suggest you try both the 100-400 and 200-600 before you buy and see which is best suited for you. Again, I am strongly promoting this lens as an all in one wildlife lens. I also own the Sony 600 f4, and in my professional opinion at closer ranges I have trouble telling which lens I have used especially after a visit to photoshop. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

If you don't mind the weight and size...

I went back and forth deciding between the Sony G Master 100-400 and this lens. I bought both and tested them on my A7III. I ended up sticking with the 100-400, but really only because I ultimately valued the 100-200 focal length more than the 400-600 range and because the 100-400 is lighter and more compact (and fits better in my bag with my other gear). But man -- the 200-600 is a beautiful lens that delivers! I didn't see any drop-off in performance across the focal range, the action on it is excellent, and it has all the features one would need. It is a hair slower than the 100-400, but that's hardly an issue. The autofocus performance is stellar. I had no problem nailing the focus on cyclocross racers pretty frequently (and I'm not a great technical photographer). If you don't mind the size and weight, this lens is a no brainer.

Best Telephoto for the Price

I rented this lens (and an A74 body) before purchasing both. I have used it for almost one year. It is amazingly sharp, well built, and has a smooth internal zoom with a short throw from 200 to 600. Since I also use (and love) Nikon D850, I recently got the Nikon AF-S 200-500 as a potential replacement (to get to a one camera setup). I had to send it back after testing both because the Sony was sharper in every situation both at large and small apertures. The only downside to this lens is that it does not have a larger aperture like f4, but of course that would make it ridiculously heavy and expensive. If you want a tack sharp lens with a smooth feel at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with this one. I also bought the 1.4x teleconverter which seems to work well (extending the range to 840mm). Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Canon nor Nikon make their tripod feet Arca-Swiss compatible, so I had to buy a Really Right Stuff replacement foot.

Long Lens Value for Sony

TLDR: This is the best value long lens for Sony systems. I recently moved from a Nikon D500 + 500mm pf to the Sony A1 + FE 200-600 for bird photography. The Sony 200-600 is more versatile, being a zoom, but heavier than the 500mm pf. Image quality of the Sony is equal to the 500mm pf. The bokeh is surprisingly good even at f/6.3. Resolving power is excellent, even on the 50mp A1. The next step up for Sony is the 600mm f/4 at $13K. IMHO this lens is 80% of the 600mm f/4 at 1/7th the price. Highly recommended.

Can I attach this lens directly to my a6600 without any lens adaptor and without any teleconverter ?
Asked by: Anonymous
I do not have the A6600, I have the A7riii, but I do believe both cameras have the same "E" mount. When you consider the crop factor, the lens would become a 300-900mm lens.

Beside the 1-stop light drop with the 1.4x, and 2-stop with the 2x, the autofocus speed is noticeably slower with the 2x than with the 1.4x teleconverter... Same decrease in the 200-600 lens sharpness ;)

This lens is made in China. Does it mean all parts of the lens are manufactured in China?

I would assume so. Rest assured, the lens is very well made from durable materials. It's easily on par with other consumer electronic products. The Chinese make high quality products (iPhone, TVs, etc) while keeping costs down. The bag is the only thing that needs to be upgraded IMO.
