Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens
Super-Telephoto Versatility
Spanning a versatile telephoto range, the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS from Sony is a flexible zoom perfectly suited for nature, wildlife, and sports applications. Its long reach pairs with a modest maximum aperture range to render to a relatively lightweight and portable design and, as a G series lens, optical quality, focus speed, and attention to handling details are also priorities of this well-rounded super-tele zoom.
Long-Reaching, Stabilized Zoom
  • Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this super-telephoto can also be used on APS-C models to achieve an equivalent 300-900mm focal length range.
  • Maximum aperture range of f/5.6-6.3 helps minimize size and weight while providing excellent performance in a variety of applications.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • OSS has three dedicated modes, including panning and viewfinder stabilization priority settings, and can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Internal zoom design limits the overall length of the lens while zooming for more intuitive and comfortable handling.
  • Compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters for further increasing the lens's reach.
G Lens Series
  • Five extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • One aspherical element is placed at the rear of the optical design and reduces distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • A rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Autofocus
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor (DDSSM) AF system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that suits both stills and video applications.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Three customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 7.9', along with a maximum magnification of 0.2x, benefits portraiture and head shots.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
Professional, Durable Design
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
Chiaro Pro 95mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 95mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

This lens has been great to shoot high school golf since you have to stay 30 yards away from players. Able to get great shot without having to be super close.

Great lens. I was in Alaska and dunked my 200-600 and it had a bunch of moisture internally. Called Sony, cheaper to buy a new one so, ordered from B&H. Once it arrived I did some testing and found it was not nearly as sharp as my original so, sent it in for an exchange. Lens #3 arrived a few days later and, tested out to be very sharp. The ease and speed of buying/returning/exchanging at B&H will keep me coming back. Thanks!

It feels like cheating. Like bending space time to warp distances. Phenomenal lens

I bought the lens and a Sony a7r iv back in January instead of a better pair of binoculars. The lens is not perfect, but I usually get a few keepers after an outing. I haven't mastered tracking and focusing at a distance yet, but when the stars align, it's a sheer delight.

Incredible Telephoto Lens!

I love the Sony 200-600 f/5.6 G lens and use it for many purposes outside of wildlife or sports. It has quite a focal range that allow for a variety of interesting and creative perspectives. I like to really compress subjects and objects from a distance and the lens allows me to use very minimal post-cropping if any at all. It is somewhat heavy but I've found a few pretty comfortable positions to hold it free-handed for long periods of time, but I do use it on a tripod occasionally. Oddly enough I find the 70-200 GM to be more awkward to hold even though it weighs less and is smaller. If you're into street photography it will draw a lot of attention, none of which has been negative so far. I've yet to use it in any indoor situation but I've used it while recording with an A7SIII in a small but lively city at midnight with spectacular results, so f/5.6 really hasn't been bad for me in low light situations. Overall, this is literally one of my favorite lenses. And not only has it been fun for me to use, but the picture quality and build is truly professional. It technically is a bit impractical for 75% of the things I've used it for so far, but I love it. If you're thinking of getting this lens, just do it. I've attached a few photos to my review, nothing fancy. Just random samples other than animals.

Lens is great, Sony service is horrible

I bought this lens on BH in March and had an issue with the hood. The thread came undone, the hood kept on falling off. Contacted BH, they just told me to tell Sony. Would have liked a little more help from their side but that seems to be the norm these days. Sony has been sitting on this over a month after opening the case for a replacement of the hood, does not reply to emails, endless automated answering machines. After three weeks, I got someone in chat and they told me they would escalate it and then, guess what, nothing happened. Sony has sent no communication on their own volition. Makes me concerned what happens if I have a real issue. Lens itself is great.

Can I attach this lens directly to my a6600 without any lens adaptor and without any teleconverter ?
Asked by: Anonymous
I do not have the A6600, I have the A7riii, but I do believe both cameras have the same "E" mount. When you consider the crop factor, the lens would become a 300-900mm lens.

Does the Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverter have any limitations with the Sony A1?
Asked by: Linda
Beside the 1-stop light drop with the 1.4x, and 2-stop with the 2x, the autofocus speed is noticeably slower with the 2x than with the 1.4x teleconverter... Same decrease in the 200-600 lens sharpness ;)

This lens is made in China. Does it mean all parts of the lens are manufactured in China?
Asked by: George
I would assume so. Rest assured, the lens is very well made from durable materials. It's easily on par with other consumer electronic products. The Chinese make high quality products (iPhone, TVs, etc) while keeping costs down. The bag is the only thing that needs to be upgraded IMO.

Any clicking sound you hear is the stabilization in the lens and is normal.
