Sound Devices MixPre-10 II 10-Channel / 12-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder

For professional videographers, field recordists, podcasters, and Ambisonics enthusiasts who need pristine audio capture of up to eight microphones, the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II multitrack field recorder is an ideal tool. Record up to ten tracks of external sources (eight channels via XLR-1/4" combo jacks and two channels via a 3.5mm mini jack)—as well as a stereo mix—at sample rates and resolutions of up to 192 kHz / 32-bit, all while monitoring audio in headphones. If you choose to use the MixPre-6 II to stream audio, you'll be able to achieve sample rates up to 96 kHz.

The MixPre-10 II offers many upgrades over its predecessor. Chief among these features is the ability to record at 32-bit floating point to an internal SD card. The unit also functions as an audio interface capable of 32-bit floating point streaming over USB to a Mac computer. This makes it nearly impossible for you to clip (distort) audio on the way in. Whether you're recording hot or making use of the unit's astounding 142 dB dynamic range, you'll only be handicapped by the quality of your microphone.

The device sports the same Kashmir preamps as the MixPre-10T with one key difference: an even lower noise floor, at 130 dBV. With line-level XLR and 3.5mm outputs, you can monitor in both headphones and on a compatible line-level device at the same time. Timecode connections are made possible via BNC, HDMI, and 3.5mm connections.

All of this is available in an eight-channel package that can be powered from wall chargers, AA batteries, or Sony L-series batteries. Whether you use the device in an advanced or basic capacity, the MixPre-10 II will suit any intimate, field-based production.

Simultaneous 12-Track Recording
Record all 10 input channels and your stereo mix at the same time in 44.1, 48, 96, or 192 kHz resolution.
Audio Interface Functionality
When connected to a Mac or Windows computer, the MixPre-10 II can serve as a 12-input / 4-output USB audio interface at up to 96 kHz for your favorite audio recording software.

The unit can send a complete 32-bit float audio signal over USB when connected to a Mac computer running macOS Catalina (version 10.15 or later).

A Cornucopia of Connections
For inputs, you'll find eight XLR-1/4" combo jacks and a 3.5mm auxiliary input. 48V Phantom power is available. Audio output connections are handled over 3.5mm connections and XLR line-level outs. Timecode I/O is made possible via 3.5mm connections, HDMI, and BNC.
Adjust on the Fly
Adjust the limiters, change the bit-depth, shift panning, delay, and polarity in the stereo mix and filter out extraneous bass rumble with low-cut filters. Whether you record to an SD card or to your computer over USB, the MixPre-10 II can be customized to your needs.
Built-In Timecode Generator & Bluetooth Control
Thanks to the device's timecode generator, you can even trigger recording from the camera. With built-in Bluetooth, you can control the unit over the Wingman app, available from Sound Devices. This app displays high-resolution meters, current timecode, transport buttons, and more.
Timecode Synchronization
Timecode from a camera or master TC clock can be patched into the MixPre-10 II's HDMI Type-D jack, 3.5mm aux input, or BNC timecode input. In any case, the device automatically detects the incoming timecode frame rate and stamps the recorded files accordingly. The low-drift internal timecode generator can be set to pause when recording stops, jam-sync to a temporary timecode source, or continue in "free run" mode for up four hours after powering down.
Ambisonics Integration
Upon installation of the Ambisonics plug-in (available separately from the Sound Devices plug-in store), field recordists, game developers, and VR content creators will appreciate the support for simultaneous multiformat recording (AmbiX, FuMa, LR Stereo, and LR Binaural), real-time binaural/stereo monitoring, and A- to B-Format conversion.
Expandable Functionality
Buy the Musician Plug-In from the Sound Devices online store to add in-unit music recording to your MixPre-10 II. The Musician Plug-In adds built-in features and effects like overdub, reverb, and vocal air. Create Music Projects to lay down backing tracks and use them live or at home for writing or practicing.

A great tool for BASIC ENG

I love this mixer. But I quickly outgrew it. It sounds amazing, it's easy to use & has incredible features at its price point. It's also vey light weight which is important when portable. Now the few things I found that didn't really work for me once I started using it regularly. The output is 1/8. I found with all the high quality features that this was odd. Next, that is the ONLY output. So if you're outputting to camera & also need an IFB for production or talent, you have to start panning mics & splitting signal. Last, there is only aux/TC in, no TC out. It's 1/8 not BNC, that means another adaptor if using it for TC. I decided to upgrade to the MixPre-10. It's not much more expensive than the 6. So if you're undecided consider the added features of the 10.

Excellent mixer but not perfect

Having used various consumer to prosumer mixers, and one SD 633 I can confidently say that this is one of the best budget friendly mixers on the market right now. That being said for I will mention that it is not without its faults. My biggest quarrel with this mixer is hands down the release pins on the neutrik inputs. They are often difficult to release and I have seen them break off before. I am aware that Sound Devices has great customer support, and is able to repair them if they break. However, I do believe they should change those pins in the future. Additionally the pins that connect the battery sled option are similarly flimsy, and often need to be bent back into place. I have since transitioned to operating off of the hirose port using a V-mount battery. That may have solved my problem, but the 3 and 6 variants do not have the hirose option which is where I feel like more people will face that issue. The last issue I've experienced, and it has only happened once after a two days of shooting, was I did have it stop mid recording due to an error. I didn't have time to read the full message, and I haven't seen it since. However, it did ruin about 7 seconds of a take. Luckily I had been running timecode, so I was able to start the recording again quickly with minimal loss. Having mentioned all of the negative, there is still plenty of mention for the positive. Over all I still think for its price, this is a five star mixer. I couldn't quite say the same for the Mix-Pre 3 or 6. However, the 10 has a great user interface. It can run 24 or 32 bit, depending on your preference. 8 channels is usually a sufficient number on smaller to mid size sets. It can generate its own timecode. The hirose power option makes powering the mixer incredibly reliable. It works great with some third party control surfaces (I personally use the Launch Control XL). The channels have a clean sound, and all in all it was a purchase that I am very happy with, and would highly recommend.

Solid Sound Devices Recorder

I'm a video productions sound mixer. I got this recorder to replace a SD 664 for bag work and a backup recorder to my SD 833. I recently used the MixPre 10 II in a bag with a boom mic and two lavs recording interviews on the streets of Miami. The menu setup is basic and easy to understand. The touch screen works well. I thought the small size of the screen would be an problem for my big fingers but the menus were easy to get to and use. The 2 TA3 output connectors are useful for feeding IFB comteks and camera hops. Something the MixPre 6 II doesn't have. The short cut switch is helpful. I used it for slate mic and changing scene numbers. I powered my bag setup with with a BDS and an NP1 battery all day. Power consumption is very good. The best part of this setup for me is the weight of my bag. This is the lightest bag setup I've ever had by far. My back loves the light weight. I'll probably use this setup for most simple bag work. Putting the memory card slot on the bottom of the recorder is not ideal and getting it in and out is tough. But that's not new with SD recorders. On first use I like the MixPre 10 II. It's another Solid Sound Devices Recorder.

This is an amazing little recorder! The Wingman App is super handy as well! Yes you don't get many outputs (and wish you can adjust the L and R output levels separately unless that is something I totally missed) however this does get the job done for almost all of my ENG/Corporate work! Limiters are pretty impressive too. I would say my only few complaints I have is that having the SD card slot on the bottom is a tad annoying, but I understand needing space for everything else on the right side. My only solution to that was buying a USB Male to USB Female 1.5ft Cable (trust me....some thumb drives and flash drives inserted in the super tight USB port is NOT fun to take out) connected to the left side and getting a PNY 512GB Elite-X Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - 200MB/s inserted was quite the useful alternative.....but that meant having to spend MORE money just for the convenience instead of having to lie the bag down to reach the SD card every time your client asks for the media. Not being able to save previous meta data like track names, project names, and scene names in case you come back to them later on is a tad annoying, but not the end of the world. Having the headphone/menu scroll knob on the side is probably the most irritating part of the unit. I have to keep the right side of the bag open a bit to reach it. Having it on the top (if it was possible) would have been so nice! Other than a couple other minor complaints.....I would say this device is a REALLY good back-up unit to your main kit. Heck depending on your line of work....this probably might just everything that you need! HIGHLY recommend it!

Overall very good mahcine, i got mine just yesterday but already loving it. I was a bit worried about the tiny touch screen but it is very responsive and works fine if your fingers are samll enough (otherwise just get a stylus)

A lot of people love the MixPre series and some don't. All the complaints I heard were about the form factor and the touch screen. I am one of the people that love the MixPre. Audio quality is incredible and I like the touch screen. The headphone knob is useful for setting gain and other settings but not as convenient when in a bag. About bags. I tried a few and settled on a K-Tek Stingray Junior X. I liked that layout more than the Orca. I usually use 24 bit mode with analog limiters but really like the 32 bit mode. For not much more file size you can have great dynamic range and not have any concern about clipping. One is the nice benefits is you set the playback volume when you set the gain so when you are working on audio it all comes in loud instead of needing to be boosted. Since you can't clip there is no concern.

The preamps are INSANE! So crisp clean! This is such a great device at such a reasonable price! My only little complaints on what I would improve on is instead of having to go into the modes to change the Gain Knobs to Basic Mode if you don't want the knobs to act like faders to L/R, but it's only one or the other....I would have include the option to operate the knob as a fader, but if you push down and turn then it adjusts the gain for the ISO channels. Instead of keeping the Knobs to act like faders, push down on knob, press the gain option, and then press the extremely small arrows or reach into side of bag (if not in bad then nevermind) for the HP/Menu knob to adjust the gain. It's such a hassle to adjust the gain! That's another thing....I know the recorder is small so limited on space...but having the HP/Menu knob on the top would have been SUPER convenient...instead of the right side inside my bag. The Sound Devices 688/664 and the news one have it on top!

I have had numerous Sound Devices units over the years and they are simply the best for the money. The pre amps and limiters are game changing in capturing location audio. I originally got into Sound Devices with the MixPre D series because I needed the limiters for loud shooting environments where I was solo shooting without an audio operator. So good. The quality of sound is night and day from using the built in pre amps on cameras. Over the years I have upgraded a few times to the latest MixPre 10ii. The MixPre 10 ii has completely overhauled my workflow and opened up so many opportunities to record high quality multichannel applications. I shoot mostly documentary style events and corporate videos. The value for the money that you get with the MixPre 10 ii is solid. From round-table discussions, interviews, live bands, weddings, and everything in between, I have not found anything this unit cannot do for my needs. My only recommendation is to make sure you budget extra for a bag and all the connectors and batteries you are going to need. Probably $1,000 for all the extras that will come. I run mine with the Sony NP series batteries and it does great, as long as you don't go cheep on the batteries. Get good ones with high capacity from IDX or Anton Bauer.

Do both batteries need to be mounted at the same time? The mixpre does not offer an option for a 7.4 watt power source-only the 14. Can I power with one and select that output? Or is it recommended to utilize both? If I can power with one battery at a time, what power setting do you recommend selecting?

Hi Lucien, No, the dual battery sled can hold one battery at a time if you choose. Power is drawn from both simultaneously, so if you wish to use only one battery at a time, only attach one. The advantage of a two battery sled is that it gives you the option to hot-swap batteries while in the midst of recording without loosing power. The power setting selected in the MixPre-10 II menu should be set to L-Mount. If you are also connecting a powering source to the 10-18V Hirose input, the MixPre-10 II will use that port primarily and only switch to L-Mount battery power once the DC source is disconnected or the power source dies.

Each Watson NP-F770 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack should last approximately 3 hours when using the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Multitrack Field Recorder at full capacity, so we estimate that with both batteries, you will have about 6 hours of power.

hello my mixpre 10 !! is it so noisy when it's at maximum volume?

Hi Julio. Any input that does not have an audio source connected will make plenty of self noise if the preamp gain is turned-up. It typically sounds like a massive waterfall. Please see this article for more information: https://www.sounddevices.com/microphone-preamp-noise/

Does this only mix to stereo or can it upmix to 5.1?

The Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Field Recorder will only mix to stereo. For a 5.1 mix, you can upload the tracks to your computer's DAW.

are you sure that the 2 x TA3 3-Pin Female Balanced Line Output are Female and not Male which is more logic?

They are male. Each port has 3 pins (not holes).

Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II features built-in analog limiters, although when recording in 32-bit input clipping is not a main concern.

It depends on what you will be connecting. The Sound Devices MixPre-10 II 10-Channel / 12-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder has eight XLR-1/4" balanced combo inputs for microphones and line level devices, as well as a 3.5mm unbalanced input for microphones and line level devices. There are two TA3 connections is for balanced line level output.
