Noisy, Flimsy, Flickering

TL;DR - The build quality is so poor that you can break the electrical contact at the base simply by screwing the bulb into a socket. The fan noise is unacceptably loud for the amount of light produced. You'll be better suited spending your money on two decent $20 bulbs from your favorite hardware store. *I received three of these lights as part of a package from school-I did not purchase them myself, but have been using them as my primary light kit for 6 months. First, one of the lights came out of the manufacture's packaging with a rattling sound, so I returned it to the school for a new one. Second, the build quality of these lights is poor. They feel cheap in your hands, the entire body is plastic, except for the aluminum heat sink just under the LED array. The tungsten cap is inconsistent in size, very slightly, as one of the 3 caps I received does not want to fit properly over the bulbs. We were warned upon receipt of the lights not to screw them in tightly as it would depress the electrical foot contact (the little metal spot on the bottom). Apparently tight for these bulbs is just tight enough to keep them from wobbling in the socket. I had to return an additional two bulbs because the foot contacts were depressed and the bulb started flickering. I have since depressed yet another foot contact, but have opted to just purchase a respectable light instead of bothering my school or Westcott to send me yet another piece of trash. Third, the fan noise these lights produce is constant and does not change not matter the brightness of the bulb. In one aspect, I thought this might be good, as a consistent fan noise would allow for simpler audio treatment in post. Then something dawned on me: I'm a beginner and know very little about cleaning up audio in post while maintaining a natural sound to dialogue. And anyone who buys these lights is likely in the same boat! So if you're using these for photos and don't get headaches easily, or you're recording video that doesn't need sound, the fan noise may not bother you. Now, the fan noise might not be a problem if you could move the light several feet away from your subject, but the amount of light produced by the bulb-especially if you're using it through a soft box or diffusion panel-doesn't really allow you to pull it back more than a couple meters from the subject. This also means you can't shoot anything particularly wide with the lights, either. The quality of these lights is so poor that I have spoken to the department head at my school, recommending they move to a different supplier. It feels like a ripoff that they were included in my tuition costs! Virtually all of my classmates have replaced or supplemented these lights with different options (including some just from the local hardware store) because these Westcott bulbs are just such a pain to deal with.

Much too loud

If this were quiet(er) I would love the dimmable + remote features. However, the fan is SO LOUD that the bulbs are unusable if you're recording audio. Very disappointed.

Great LED output but noisy

I love the power output and the control interface. The B&H website claims The integrated low-decibel cooling fan provides nearly silent operation.. However they are very far from silent. The fan kicks in the moment the bulb is switched on and is loud enough that you could not have these bulbs anywhere near a microphone. So, they'd be great for photo shoots or situations where location audio didn't matter. Thing is I need audio most of the time when I'm shooting interiors with controlled light so they will likely be going back. Too bad - as purely dimmable light bulbs they are amazing!
