Nikon P950 Overview

  • 1Description
  • 216MP BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED Image Processor
  • 383x Optical Zoom NIKKOR Lens
  • 4Body Design

Characterized by its expansive zoom, the COOLPIX P950, from Nikon, is a versatile compact camera offering a unique mixture of stills and video capabilities along with reach to photograph even the most distant of subjects. The 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor features a back-illuminated design that contributes to a high degree of clarity and reduced noise to better suit working at high sensitivities and in difficult lighting conditions. The sensor also permits recording UHD 4K video at up to 30 fps, Full HD video at up to 60 fps, and in-camera time-lapse recording and movie creation.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the P950 is, of course, distinguished by its huge 83x optical zoom lens, which covers a 24-2000mm equivalent focal length range. This immense reach is benefitted by Dual Detect Vibration Reduction, which compensates for the effects of camera shake in order to realize sharper results when shooting handheld. Additionally, the P950 also features a bright 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, large 3.2" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, and has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless sharing and remote camera control.

16MP BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED Image Processor

Featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor, the P950 is capable of realizing high-resolution stills and video along with notable speed and sensitivity. The BSI design of the sensor yields reduced noise levels and greater image clarity when working within the expandable ISO 100-6400 sensitivity range. The sensor and EXPEED processor also enables quick continuous stills shooting up to 7 fps at full resolution to suit working with moving subjects.

In addition to stills, the P950 is also capable of UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at 60 fps. Time lapse recording is supported, too, with in-camera processing to produce time lapse movies at 25 or 30 fps playback.

83x Optical Zoom NIKKOR Lens

The P950's key feature is its impressive 83x zoom lens, which provides a huge wide-angle to super telephoto 24-2000mm equivalent focal length range. This range can be effectively doubled to 166x when using Dynamic Fine Zoom for even greater reach to truly isolate those distant subjects. At the wide-angle end, the lens has a bright f/2.8 design to suit working in available light and Dual Detect VR also helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to suit handheld shooting. Additionally, the lens's optical design incorporates Super ED glass to suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and clarity.

Body Design

  • Bright 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder is a clear and useful means for eye-level monitoring and benefits working at longer focal lengths by serving as an additional physical point of contact against the camera.
  • For image review and menu navigation, a large 3.2" 921k-dot LCD is featured, and has a vari-angle design to better enable working from high, low, and front-facing angles.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in conjunction with Nikon's SnapBridge app for wireless file transferring and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

Nikon P950 Reviews

Nikon Coolpix P950 made a great first impression!

I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera, so felt familiar with the camera's features before buying. I've been working with it for a couple of weeks and it meets or exceeds my expectations. It is easy to handle and lighter in weight than I expected. A good balance between flexibility and ease of use. On line user manual very easy to use and informative. Still learning, but I am impressed with the quality of photos I have taken. I bought this camera primarily for birding and I'm enjoying it in the field. I'm also pleased with B&H Photo. Camera arrived within 2 days and accessories I subsequently ordered came next day - neither was a rush order. Website easy to use and informative; customer service rep I used chat function with was prompt and helpful.

Excellent birding camera

I still consider myself somewhat of a beginner at the age of 70, and I wanted to be able to extend my zoom capabilities of my current camera (FZ80). This camera fit the bill. I love the birding and moon settings. After a period of use it does become a bit burdensome due to the weight. I know it will be an excellent all around camera to use on our upcoming trip to Iceland.

As a professional photographer, I wanted a fun camera for nature and wildlife.I found it with my Nikon Coolpix P950. The quality of the images is better than I was hoping for. I'm really enjoying this camera.

Everything I Need

I like getting good shots while out hiking, but I got tired of lugging a 8 pound telephoto monster up mountains. When I heard I could get a 2000mm zoom in a 2 pound setup, I was ecstatic! After much research this camera really blows away most of the competition in it's price range giving you unmatched zoom, 4K video, WiFi capabilities and great portability making it perfect for travelers and adventurers. I don't know if I'd use it for high paying professional work due to the smaller sensor, but it is absolutely perfect for any other fun side projects, youtube videos and instagram photos.

Limited Aperture Range

By Adrian

This camera has an aperture upper limit of f8 in the mid focal lengths. You have to increase shutter speeds very high in order to meter in sunny conditions. That aperture limitation is unacceptable for landscape photography. The telephoto range is great and managed to take some sharp shots at 1000-1500mm. Also I am getting a spot on all of mages in the same area. This has happened since first photos were taken after camera was right out of the box. Will be returning camera.

The finest camera I've ever owned

This camera does everything I've ever asked of it. The telephoto is out of this world - literally. I take lovely photos of the moon and other astronomical events. On Earth, I can zoom in on anything in the woods that catches my eye. A single leaf in autumn, at 100 meters, is a piece of cake. Architectural details are brought up close and clear. It even has a special setting for birdwatching. Its auto features are fine and the special 'scene' features are awesome.

It's a great camera, especially for birding as well as sports but it's also a great all around camera I usually shoot a Nikon D600 with a 150-600 mm lens and a monopod about 15 pounds altogether with the p950 I travel light and get much further reach the only negative is the manual or lack there of, instead they give you a 21 page 4X6 inch poorly illustrated quick start guide not nearly enough information for what the camera is capable of doing, for example: the camera is capableble of both manual focus as well as auto focus but they don't tell you how to focus the camera manually as for the online pdf, I'd have to carry a computer with me to use it
