Nikon P950 Overview

  • 1Description
  • 216MP BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED Image Processor
  • 383x Optical Zoom NIKKOR Lens
  • 4Body Design

Characterized by its expansive zoom, the COOLPIX P950, from Nikon, is a versatile compact camera offering a unique mixture of stills and video capabilities along with reach to photograph even the most distant of subjects. The 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor features a back-illuminated design that contributes to a high degree of clarity and reduced noise to better suit working at high sensitivities and in difficult lighting conditions. The sensor also permits recording UHD 4K video at up to 30 fps, Full HD video at up to 60 fps, and in-camera time-lapse recording and movie creation.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the P950 is, of course, distinguished by its huge 83x optical zoom lens, which covers a 24-2000mm equivalent focal length range. This immense reach is benefitted by Dual Detect Vibration Reduction, which compensates for the effects of camera shake in order to realize sharper results when shooting handheld. Additionally, the P950 also features a bright 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, large 3.2" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, and has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless sharing and remote camera control.

16MP BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED Image Processor
Featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor, the P950 is capable of realizing high-resolution stills and video along with notable speed and sensitivity. The BSI design of the sensor yields reduced noise levels and greater image clarity when working within the expandable ISO 100-6400 sensitivity range. The sensor and EXPEED processor also enables quick continuous stills shooting up to 7 fps at full resolution to suit working with moving subjects.

In addition to stills, the P950 is also capable of UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at 60 fps. Time lapse recording is supported, too, with in-camera processing to produce time lapse movies at 25 or 30 fps playback.
83x Optical Zoom NIKKOR Lens
The P950's key feature is its impressive 83x zoom lens, which provides a huge wide-angle to super telephoto 24-2000mm equivalent focal length range. This range can be effectively doubled to 166x when using Dynamic Fine Zoom for even greater reach to truly isolate those distant subjects. At the wide-angle end, the lens has a bright f/2.8 design to suit working in available light and Dual Detect VR also helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to suit handheld shooting. Additionally, the lens's optical design incorporates Super ED glass to suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and clarity.
Body Design
  • Bright 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder is a clear and useful means for eye-level monitoring and benefits working at longer focal lengths by serving as an additional physical point of contact against the camera.
  • For image review and menu navigation, a large 3.2" 921k-dot LCD is featured, and has a vari-angle design to better enable working from high, low, and front-facing angles.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in conjunction with Nikon's SnapBridge app for wireless file transferring and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

Nikon P950 Reviews

great camera for what i wanted

i bought this mainly to photograph birds from a fixed location (my apartment balcony) or otherwise while out walking. and for that purpose, it is outstanding. it has a bird icon on the mechanical control dial! which btw I used to photograph any animals. the lens is surprisingly sharp, and produced excellent bokeh too btw. there's a grackle nest about 30 feet from my balcony and I shot stills and video in may and june of the little ones hatching and being fed round the clock by their parents. and, pics of many other birds and animals as well. it's a fun camera. not especially portable.

Great for Birds

I purchased the Nikon P950 to use for bird photos. Typically, I use a Canon 100-400 mm lens with a 5D Mark Iv body. This camera works great for getting those far away shots you might otherwise miss. I was skeptical but it works well although I wish I could shoot in RAW. Impressed with the quality of the photos.

Exellent Camera, but very poor information booklet

Using the automatic settings I got great close up animal pictures at the Denver Wild Animal Sanctuary. But the information booklet said nothing about the green or yellow boxes that appeared in the view finder. A more informative and detailed booklet would be a great improvement.

Great point and shoot

This is a great, lightweight point and shoot camera. It has improved over the P900 and so much smaller and lighter than the P1000. I got it as an option for when I go on long hikes, etc. and it is so much easier than carrying my full camera gear. It works great!

Cool Photos

Excellent Camera, It would get 5 stars except you really need a tripod something I did not read, when I ordered it for long telephoto shots, just a slight movement and you loose your perspective on the location and I had to zoom out and in quite often but why you can get it focused it is absolutely the best camera I have ever owned.

Amazing camera!

With 83x optical zoom that can take clear, detailed images of the moon, plus the ability to take clear, detailed closeups of 1 cm invertebrates equally well, how can you go wrong? Perfect for all of my camera needs!

Love this Camera!

I'm still learning about this camera but so far I'm loving it! A bit heavier than I thought but not overly heavy. Glad I chose this one.

Why would I buy a P950 and pay more versus buying a P900? As far as I see, the P950 has a hot shoe, but lacks GPS...that is something of a trade off, being that the selling line of the P900s is the telephoto capability were a hot shoe would nothing to the equation
Asked by: Luiz Fernando
The EVF is much better on this camera than on the P900. It shoots RAW. Its burst mode is longer. This camera is the result of the feedback Nikon got on its P900. It's worth the difference in price.

The tripos socket broke out of my Nikon Coolpix P900 because it is plastic and it was not positioned in the middle of the camera. Has this been corrected in the P950?
Asked by: Carrie
My Nikon Coolpix P950 has a metal tripod socket. The socket is centered on the base of the lens, at the center of mass of the camera. I've used it frequently with no problems, mounted to a "quick-release" plate for my Manfrotto tripod.
