Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Overview

By B&H Photo's

A popular zoom among sports, event, and portrait photographers, the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S from Nikon is an impressively versatile telephoto lens characterized by its bright f/2.8 design. The fast maximum aperture suits working in available lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects with selective focus. The optical design incorporates a series of ED, fluorite, and SR elements, which help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Vibration Reduction further complements making sharp images by reducing the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Versatile zoom is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with DX-format models where it provides a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Featuring a combination of six extra-low dispersion elements, one fluorite element, and one short-wave refractive index element, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are featured to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Removable, rotating tripod collar spins on ball bearings to permit quick and smooth switching from vertical to horizontal shooting orientations.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Reviews

Everything and more

Yes...I read all about the Z9, the great reviews..etc... so I waited and finally got my chance to secure an incredible camera. Naturally, I needed an incredible lens to go with it and the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S was the ticket. I'd read about it's sharpness and how it is truly better than the F mounted lens of the same focal length. I couldn't believe the reviews were accurate since I have been using my F with my D850 with tremendous results...until I got my Z. Fantastic quality, superior pinpoint sharpness and total satisfaction on my part. Additionally, I bought it on sale, with a free UV filter that I have since replaced... but a great lens, a great deal and outstanding service from B&H...truly a rewarding experience.

Saved up to purchase this lens. I shoot mainly landscape and wildlife. I have the 24-200z, which is a great all around lens, but I really missed the 2.8 aperture I had with other F mounts. As other reviews note, it is a big lens but that's not a big deal for me. Image quality is superb as expected. It really does blow the 24-200 out of the water at comparable focal lengths. Stabilization is magnificent so far in low light conditions. Build quality is what you would expect. I was out doing some landscape shots in a snow storm recently and was confident with it in these conditions. The hood lock is wonderful too. I've not programmed the extra buttons but they're placed nicely on the barrel for easy access. I don't use the lit screen on the barrel much so it's kind of an extra I don't really use. Changed out the foot for a new Kirk swiss-arca like everyone else. Works perfectly and highly recommend. I might purchase the Z-2x converter which would be nice for specific type of wildlife shooting while not giving up landscape opportunities. I do a bit of portrait shooting but have not had a chance to use it in this capacity. I did test the lens out of the box and it's a good copy. Excellent step up from the F mounts, no contest.

I have switched from using a good Nikon F mount lens with the F2P adapter to this 70 - 200 f2.8 NIKKOR S lens. The difference of this lens compared to the others I used is simply an amazing upgrade. Granted the lens id about twice the price yet the quality and feel prove its worth. I would recommend this lens to whoever is serious or getting serious with their photography interest or business.

Years ago, I had a 70-200 F2.8 F mount. When I wanted to upgrade cameras, I traded the 2.8 in on a camera and an 70-200 F4. I quickly regretted that trade. Once I moved to a Z6ii, I planned on getting the Z mount 70-200 2.8 S. This lens combined with the new mirrorless Nikon is phenomenal. No matter how good my old 70-200 was before, this S mount is much better. If you had one lens, this is it. Just buy it.

Just getting into mirrorless. This is a great lens. I have use 70-200 lens on my DSLRs for years. This is equal to any I have had in the past. Appears to be well constructed and sealed against dust.

I used the Nikkor 70-200mm, f/2.8 VR S lens both stand alone and with a Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2x. The pictures obtained were good quality and sharp in both cases. Using the teleconverter gave images similar to those taken with a 400mm lens.

When used with a Nikon Z6 or Z7, is this lens designed to be water-resistant or water proof? What are the recommendations for use during a (light) rain?
Asked by: Mike
The Nikon Z6 Mirrorless Digital Camera, the Nikon Z7 Mirrorless Digital Camera, and the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens are all weather-sealed products from Nikon to protect both the cameras and the lens from dust and moisture. They are not waterproof, so neither the cameras nor the lens can be submerged or used underwater, but they can be used in inclement weather.

Can this lens be used for Macro photography?

Can this lens be used for Macro photography?
Asked by: Jay
While it can focus to under two feet, it cannot give you true macro imaging which would require a 1:1 (life size) magnification ratio. A combination of extension tubes and or close-up lenses would be needed for macro imaging, if possible, with this lens. Distortion and image degradation would likely also be a problem.
