Ilford XP2 Super 400 Overview

  • 1Description

Ilford's XP2 Super is a high-speed chromogenic black and white negative film that can be processed alongside conventional color negative films in C-41 chemistry. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400/27°, however can be under- or overexposed in order to adjust contrast as well as the balance of grain and sharpness. When rated at ISO 400, the most neutral balance between a fine grain structure and high sharpness will be afforded. Its wide exposure latitude can also be used to better control highlight and shadow values, as well as an expansive range of middle tones. Additionally, XP2 Super is designed for printing on traditional black and white papers, with Multigrade contrast filters, as well as on RA-4 color papers with maintained print color neutrality.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film in a DX-coded cassette.

Ilford XP2 Super 400 Reviews

XP2 Super Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from XP2-super I'm a San Francisco photographer/filmmaker and used this film as an experiment in shooting portraits. I didn't how I felt about the idea of black and white being run through a c41 bath (color developing) but thought I'd give it a try anyway. The results were surprisingly stunning. This film pushed the range of contrast in a way I hadn't really seen before. Some images contained grain depending on my aperture, and others were extremely sharp. I think it's a good film to try once you have gotten to know some other ilford stocks. I buy this in boxes usually, as I use it for work and for personal use. Try it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works, and it looks good doing it I purchased the Ilford XP2 Super for the fact that it's a C-41 process film that I can get developed at @ along with my color film. The images look great, the grain is nice and tight, the dynamic range/tolerance for overexposure is great, and I am more than pleased.I've read opinions from film shooters (I am new to film) that this film doesn't match up to traditional B&W films. I don't know about all that. The images look good to me, and I've been using them in my work with success.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only B&W film I use. Great Film I have used this film since it first was available. I shoot only 35mm (Canon AE-1 Program). I do mostly street photography. This film works great under all lighting conditions. I have it processed ..., scanned to a CD and then I print on my computer. I use an Epson R2880 printer. It does a fantastic job in B&W. Looks as good as what I did years ago in the dark room and I don't have to breath the chemicals. One great film. I shoot only with fast Prime lens.Doug Albert,Houston, Tx.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ilford XP2 Super... An outstanding, wide range chromogenic film that I use exclusively in my Nikons...I get my best results shooting it at ISO 200, and having it processed at its rated speed of 400. Images are slightly less contrasty, as I prefer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seriously, the best b+w film I was around when XP2 was first released. ?It does things other b+w films can't with greater convenience. ?Rated at ISO 400 it has the grain of a 100 speed film. ?Overexpose it a stop, and its grain becomes that of an ISO 50 film. ?It does wonders with flash and skin tones. ?It gives amazing shadow detail (particularly when overexposed a little) and retains an incredible amount of highlight detail (although the curve isn't particularly linear for the highlights). ?Especially when scanned (traditional wet printing can honestly be a ?bear with this film) it allows you to achieve looks that would require days of experimenting with film and develop combinations to achieve. ?Use traditional b+w processes for the looks you want (I still love Tri-X in Rodinal, for example), but this is the best all-purpose b+w film, period.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All around great film! Love the classic Black & White look, with decent amounts of grain and good shades of value. I love the fact it is C-41 which makes it easy to get developed. Couldn't complain with the price or quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Black and White for when C-41 is desired I just recently started film photography again after stopping for a while. Since my local camera shop can process C-41 this is a great film and they even sell the 24 exposure as well as the 120 versions. The contrast of this film is excellent. In 400 ISO this film is very useful for general purpose applications and wide exposure latitude makes it easier to use overexposure compensation without worrying if it is too much. I recommend this film for a beginner or an old hand who wants black and white in C-41.
