Compact and competitively priced, the Solid State Logic SSL 2 desktop 2x2 USB audio interface puts legendary SSL analog character, pristine conversion, and intuitive console-style workflow within reach for producers, home recordists, musicians, and songwriters on a tight budget.

Its two SSL-designed mic preamps—accessible via XLR-1/4" combo inputs—feature class-leading gain, headroom, and noise specs for tracking mics, electric instruments, or line-level signals with ultraclean definition. When you do want some character and pizzazz for an input, simply press that channel's "Legacy 4K" button to add a high-frequency boost and smooth harmonic distortion, both inspired by the classic and heralded 4000-Series consoles used on countless hit records.

Both input channels, which are arranged vertically like a large-format mixing board, also provide 5-segment LED metering and selectable 48V phantom power per channel. The SSL 2 is equipped with a pair of monitor outputs and a high-current headphone out with high dynamic range, independent level control via Alps pots, and a selectable mono/stereo monitor mix.

The layout of the interface harkens back to SSL's classic large-format analog consoles, featuring a prominent monitor level knob and smaller controls for your headphone out and monitor mix. The monitor mix knob can be used to counter any latency while recording at high buffer rates in your DAW by sourcing the monitor signal directly from the input path. Or rotate the knob to the right to introduce more of the USB return from your computer for easy overdubs.

Bundled with the SSL 2 is the SSL Production Pack, an inspiring collection of software, sounds, and plug-ins that'll not only help you get started, but also keep your work fresh track after track. Included are 1.5GB of loops and samples from Loopcloud, over 2000 sounds from Native Instruments, two DAWs (Pro Tools | First and Ableton Live Lite), and SSL's own Vocalstrip 2 and Drumstrip plug-ins.

High-Gain Microphone Preamps
Both mic preamps on the SSL 2 provide up to 62 dB of gain to ensure optimal recording levels for your favorite condenser mic, industry-standard dynamic mics such as the Shure SM7B, and electric instruments such as guitar and bass. They incorporate a two-stage design with low-noise transistors and ICs (integrated circuits) to deliver top-of-the-line noise performance and ample gain.
Console-Style Channels Strips
Each input section offers switches for +48V phantom power and selection of line-level or Hi-Z input signal. Plus, you'll find 5-segment LED metering and gain knobs on both channels.
Analog Tone Enhancement
Underneath the gain knobs on both input channels, you'll note the Legacy 4K button. This feature helps you bring dull, uninspiring audio to life as you record it, doing so by adding subtle harmonic distortion and a high-frequency boost. Both are analog processes that take their cue from the sound of the legendary and classic SSL 4000 Series consoles, hence the name 4K.
Independent Monitor and Headphone Outs
Presented on the rear panel of the SSL 2 are 1/4" jacks for the stereo monitor outs and the high-current NJM headphone amp output. Separate high-quality pots are provided for independent volume control of your speakers and headphones.
Pristine Converters
Packed with the same AKM AD/DA converters as SSL's acclaimed Alpha-Link I/O products, the SSL 2 offers pristine conversion at up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. Record and mix confidently knowing that the interface captures and reproduces your tracks without compromise
High-Quality Components
The SSL 2 is laden with high-grade Neutrik connectors and Alps pots, and all knobs and switches are reminiscent of iconic SSL consoles.
USB Type-C or Type-A Host Connection
Since the SSL 2 is powered via USB, there's no need to be concerned with power cables, AC adapters, or batteries. It sports a USB Type-C connection and includes USB Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A cables for easy hookup to your Mac/Windows computer.
SSL Production Pack

  • Plug-Ins: Vocalstrip 2 and Drumstrip, plus a 6-month trial of all SSL Native plug-ins

Solid State Logic SSL2 Reviews

Great with a couple of caveats

Seems to do everything as advertised, and works fine with Windows using only the driver (no DAW). It has enough gain for my very low output Shure SM57 mikes, as long as I don't want to use them very far away from my mouth. And it sounds really good on a Rode NT-1. I did have some electrical interference blips result from having my phone too close while recording, but it's possible that some of this was contributed by the mic electronics also/instead.

Best Audio Interface for the money

I have used other audio interfaces in the past (m-audio among them) but always struggled with latency. This wasn't a problem when I was recording; however, it was a big problem for me when I was streaming or interacting live. The delays were too much to stay with the beat (playing bass/guitar) or even live in conversations (podcasts, interviews, etc.). With the SSL 2, I can have a dedicated channel for my guitar and my mic all while maintaining quality and keeping lag at a minimum. In addition, I have plugged in two speakers and have been able to play a small live session. An unintended benefit was an impromptu karaoke night over the holidays. Solid product.

Needed Separate Volumes

I needed to control the monitor and headphone volumes separately and this does this well. Also has a Mix dial for listening or not listening to the mic input.

My mic of choice for voice over is the Rode Broadcaster. With this interface, i just engage the 4K switch and record everything as is and it sounds so good. I love this card and the price is awesome!

Bought this to go with my Shure SM7B microphone. I didn't even need a cloudlifter with this baby and I hardly need to touch up the audio at all afterwards! A great purchase!

Great Interface for a great price!

This interface came highly regarded from an audio engineer friend and was definitely a step up from my older Behringer UMC22. It has crisp and clean preamps and I like how easy it is to switch between monitor and USB out. I don't have an opinion about the 4K mode because I mainly record spoken word and I don't think it's an appropriate effect for what I'm after (it tends to boost the highs which in my case is mostly background noise). I'm a little disappointed that you can't separate the two inputs on my PC -- this means if I'm on a video-conference and only using one mic it's only using the left channel and I'm never sure if the video stream is down-mixing to mono and mixing in 50% silence from the unused channel. I also wish there was either an indicator lamp or the toggle switches for phantom power were a bit more obvious -- I can't tell without feeling for a subtle difference in height if my condenser mics are powered. I've also been quite pleased with using it as my sound card -- I unplugged and uninstalled drivers for my other devices and have been using this as a PC's sound output with no complaints. All said, I wish I'd known about this product years ago and I'm more than pleased with the value for money!

big improvement, wish I got the version with MIDI

I had a funky JBL M-Patch 2 that never really sounded very good. One channel was always a bit lower than the other, but it served my needs at the time. The JBL unit started to generate background noise and one channel would occasionally cut out, so I decided to replace it. This unit has much cleaner sound, some adjustment options for input levels and the panel layout and I/O is a huge improvement for my desktop space. Latency seems minimal, if at all. Some people complain about the build quality, but mine seems very solid and doesn't give me reason to worry about it's durability. My only reservation is that I wish I purchased the version with MIDI. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with this purchase. Highly recommended.

Higher quality sound for interface.

Years ago I had a large diaphragm condenser mic custom upgraded for my voice. I never could get it to sound as good as I needed. After plugging it in the SSL 2 it's fantastic. Click on the 4K boost and it's a sound that sets it apart from everything else. I use it mostly for commercial VoiceOver and video audio. Wish I had it years ago.

When connected to a laptop Windows PC will it disable /take over the internal PC microphone input? In other words can it be used *only* for output DA conversion?
Asked by: Andre
When connected to your computer for recording, you will need to go to computer's System Preferences for audio and select the SSL 2 as your input device during your setup and that will disable the computer's internal microphone. You should also select the SSL 2 as your audio output device in order to disable the built-in speakers and prevent issues with feedback from your mic picking up the sound of the internal speakers. You will be able to monitor the audio through headphones or speakers that are connected to the SSL 2. Here is a link to the user manual which will provide more details on setup and operation of the SSL 2: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/594696.pdf

Once the +48v botton is pressed, it will stay on to provide phantom power to the channel, even when the unit is turned off and back on again.
