Genaray Torpedo Bi-Color Overview

B&H has put together this Genaray Torpedo Bi-Color LED 3-Light Kit with Case for image makers requiring a light source with beam spread and power options. The kit includes three Torpedo Bi-Color LED Fresnels, each with 4-way barndoors, a multi-voltage AC adapter, and the option to run of NP-F or V-mount batteries. A waterproof, shockproof hard case is provided for storage and transport.

Note:
When using NP-F batteries with the Torpedo, you must use ONLY 7.4V batteries.
Genaray Torpedo LED Bi-Color Focusing Flood Light

With its substantial output, compact form factor, and variable beam spread, the 8 x 3.7" Torpedo LED Bi-Color Focusing Flood Light from Genaray is a valuable asset in the studio but especially on location. The Torpedo includes an AC adapter for times when an AC outlet is available, but it also runs on 7.4V NP-F batteries. If more juice is needed for lengthy shoots, a D-Tap cable is included to connect a V-mount battery.

The Fresnel lens is one of the features that gives the Torpedo versatility and flexibility. Its adjustable focus offers a 75° flood output for wide coverage that can be focused down to a 15° spot for long-throw work or sharp-shadowed sunlight effects. You can also use the included barndoors to further modify the beam to selectively light areas of your subject. The fixture's light source is a 60W COB LED array that generates the equivalent of a 300W tungsten fixture. Despite its power, the Torpedo gives off negligible heat, allowing you to squeeze it into tight places or work close to the subject without being concerned about damage or discomfort. As a further precaution, the light's thermo-controlled fan kicks in when needed and extends the LED life to 50,000 hours. The fan is quiet enough for even the most sound-sensitive environments. This fixture features stepless dimming from 1 to 100% and its color is variable from 3200 to 5600K, while its CRI/TLCI rating of 95.8/98 is your assurance of superior color rendition.

The Torpedo is ready for worldwide use, thanks to its 100-240 VAC power adapter; but it will also run on optional 7.4V NP-F or V-mount batteries when AC power is unavailable, A carry case is included for the light's storage and transport.

Note:
When using NP-F batteries with the Torpedo, you must use ONLY 7.4V batteries.
COB LEDs
Besides defeating multiple shadows and square edges that plague other fixtures, the powerful COB LED Array outputs the equivalent of a 300W tungsten fixture.
Fresnel Lens for Adjustable Beam Spread
The Fresnel lens is adjustable from a 75° flood for wide coverage to a tight 15° spot for long-throw work.
Bi-Color Control with High CRI and TLCI Ratings and Dimmable
Bi-Color control and dimmable, the Torpedo's color temperature is adjustable from 3200 to 5600K with high CRI and TLCI ratings of 95.8 and 98 - indicators of superior accuracy in color rendition. The Torpedo is also conveniently and continuously dimmable from 1 to 100%.
Stepless Dimming
The Torpedo is also conveniently and continuously dimmable from 1 to 100%. Whether you place the light close up or further away, you can dial in the precise brightness you need for your exposure or video.
Multi-Voltage AC or Optional Battery Power
The Torpedo is ready for worldwide use via its included 100 to 240 VAC adapter, but it will also run on optional 7.4V NP-F or V-mount batteries when AC power is unavailable.
Fan-Cooled
The light's thermo-controlled fan kicks in when needed to extend the LED life to 50,000 hours. The fan is quiet enough for even the most sound-sensitive environments.
Light Shapers and Modifiers
The included barndoors facilitate selective lighting while the included diffusers and color filters allow you to personalize the quality of light on the shoot. The Torpedo's mount also has an integrated umbrella channel for even more lighting options.

Genaray Torpedo Bi-Color Reviews

Good Light some downsides

I've been using this light for a year on a variety of projects. The light is great for a number of things. Pros: Power, but not enough to diffuse for a key light Focusing and light control Great for back light or a streak of light in the background. Cons - with NPF batteries it will shut off when the battery is half full because of the voltage and some batteries even less. -switching from 3200k to 5600k can take 30s or more since you have to press and hold a tiny button as it slowly toggles up by 100K increments. A knob would have been much nicer (same for changing brightness -Power cable is weak and no real solution offered to hang it -short v mount cable and no place to mount v mount batteries

Fantastic, exactly what I was looking for. Easily adjustable, other reviews described them as delicate but we had no trouble adjusting barn doors or installing the diffuser lenses (they come with a variety of colors and barn doors have to be removed to place them), the case holds them all securely and not too snugly. Literally no complaints here. Cooling fans are quiet, and light quality was great for indoor uses. Honestly for the price they blew me away. Fantastic product and deal. And B&H shipped promptly and securely. Thank you so much I'm always happy to buy from you guys. Cheers!

Decent light but cheaply built

Be warned - the barn doors on my lights broke the very first time I used them. But it's a decent light otherwise. Pretty powerful for the small size and easy to focus.

Good light.

I was looking for an alternative for Lowel 250w type lights and maybe with a little less power it is a good alternative. The buttons are not the most practical.

Nice lights, compact package.

These are great little lights for interviews. The three-point system covers most of your standard situations. The dimming and colour-adjustment works great for exactly what I wanted. I was able to transport this easily in a small car and maneuver through locations without too much trouble, the kit is snug but I prefer it that way. The throw and focus are nice, too. I don't like the tightening wingnuts on the side for the tilt. They feel brittle, and when I had a softbox on these that was slightly too big, there was no way to lock them firmly enough. With the right-sized softboxes, things were better but I had to tighten the bejeezuz out of them and I worry that over time this will get harder until they snap off. Maybe I will put some gaff tape or something with more texture on that part of the light so there's more friction. With the low heat LED's it should be fine. I also dislike the loose lenses, as others have mentioned. Working with assistants, I have to constantly remind them that these will fall out and break if the barndoors are taken off without due care. This is stress I don't need. Some have mentioned the tough buttons which are hard to hit if you are stretching your arms - they need a very firm click. I guess that means they will last longer? Or does it mean the opposite? Don't know. That said, for the price I really like this. I did a shoot two weeks in a row, once without these lights and once with. They were much easier to transport, set up and adjust than the big guys I rented before. The texture of the light was nicer too, perhaps because the lenses really soften the wavelength of the LED's... a bigger soft light I used seemed to make everything grainier at the same temperature.

Okay, not great

This is the kind of light you use in a studio or product shot where the features don't make a difference. The light is an okay build, though I unpacked mine upon arrival O could hear something shaking inside that sounded like a small piece of loose plastic. The barndoors are lose the moment you rotate then as they are threaded on. Now most tungsten fresnels have barndoors that rotate freely in their holders: nothing new here. The problem is because it is threaded I foresee them falling off if you are trying to create a slash and forget how many rotations have been made, or the barndoors sliding out of position during a shot. I'm suspect of the 75 degree beam angle on full flood. Felt more like 60 degrees. The intensity adjustments are made by pressing on the back panel arrow buttons. Not exaxtly fun if you are in a cumbersome position and cannot read the LED panel for information. The fresnel lens is not impressive. Plastic. Period. If you unscrew the barndoors to use the Bowens attachment and a softbo, the fresnel lens will fall out. I felt the Kelvin temperatures were accurate. The power connector geta stuck. Instructions say not to push in hard, but they don't mention how hard you'll have to pull to get the cable out. Genaray is not a bad brand. It just has a way to go before competing with Aputure or even Nanlite.

I just received my light and used it the first time. It was great and I think it is a multifunctional light, I used it for different scenarios.

Broke after a few uses

One of the lights broke after only a few uses -- broken to the point where it started smelling like burned plastic/rubber. Unfortunately, I waited to use it a few weeks after we received it and it is no longer returnable. The lights are also not very bright and even with the barn doors, the light scope is still very small and almost like shining a flashlight on something. Don't waste your money on this product, purchase a kit that will be brighter and won't break after a few uses.

How long do batteries last?

I use this light in TV News for my morning live shots and I usually have the power no higher than 35% at night and maybe around 46-50% during the day. The fully charged battery is usually shot after a morning worth of Liveshots. My AC adapter broke and haven’t got it replaced yet. I’m not sure why it comes with a less than professional AC adapter.

How far from the ceiling should the light be placed?
Asked by: Brian
It depends how tall the ceiling is. This is not as powerful as an ellipsoidal beam or LECO. I have used it mostly as a background accent light or a backlight. It's an LED so because of it's size, it's no so powerful. I'd say to get a usable effect you shouldn't place higher than 10 ft.
